Hey I hope you’re all doing well! It’s been brought to my attention recently that some of you may not understand why we charge a dematting fee and I thought I would jump on here to offer a brief explanation. Hopefully I don’t bore you too much hehe! But I feel like it’s important information and perhaps maybe some might find interesting.

So, dematting…. Why do groomers charge extra? Well its quite simply because it is an extra service that requires time. There are a few reasons why dog coats become matted but once it does become matted beyond a few knots here and there, there is very little groomers can do unfortunately. In this instance the best option for the dogs well being is to clip off the coat and start again. The last thing any dog wants to do is stand on a table for hours on end to be brushed/combed out and it would be very uncomfortable for them which is an absolute no no! so therefore for the dogs benefit we unfortunately have to clip off the coat to a length that is able to get underneath the matting. This requires a lot of care and attention, a lot of skill and even this may be uncomfortable for dogs so therefore they need a lot of reassurance. Dematting also damages our equipment which we have to maintain often. It is also very physically demanding and takes it’s toll on our hands and body and can be quite painful. But the final result is a much happier and more comfortable dog which I’m sure you will agree is first and foremost!

So safe to say a matt free dog is always very much preferred by your dog most importantly and your groomer who can then get to working their magic on what they actually love to do which is styling your dogs. I hope that makes some sense and hopefully offers a bit of clarity on reasons why we have to charge for this service.
