A heatstroke can so easily happen, so it is important to spot the signs such as:

Heavy panting and difficulty breathing
Excessively drooling
The dog appears lethargic, drowsy or uncoordinated
Collapsed or vomiting

If you spot any of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately! 🩺

We have to brace ourselves for another scorcher for the next few days and for our pets it is no different! 🥵🔥☀️

To see whether or not you can take your dog for a walk on the pavement, do the pavement test 🤚🐾

✅ If you are unsure it is cool enough, press your hand to the pavement for 5 seconds.
✅ If it is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for your dog's paws.

Also if, during the day, your pet seems to be in discomfort, try wetting their feet and misting water onto their face. 💧

Even though they are so beautiful in our gardens, daffodils can be toxic to both dogs and cats! Even the water from a vase where daffodils have been can be poisonous! 😔🐱🐶

Symptoms of daffodil poisoning are:

- An upset stomach
- Vomiting
- Looking sleepy or wobbly
- Increased heart rate

It is really hot out there for our doggies and kitties 🥵☀️

As a result, it is really important to keep your pets as cool as possible. 🐶🐱 Here are a few tips to help you do that:

- Do not leave your dog in a locked car! Dogs in hot cars can suffer fatal heat stroke in as little as 15 minutes.

- Exercise your dog early in the morning and late in the evening, when it is cooler.

- Take water with you on walks and give dogs small, frequent drinks.

- Take your dog swimming or spray them with water when out on walks.

- Make sure your cat and your dog have at least 2 full bowls of water at home.

If you feel like your dog suffers from dizziness, vomiting, heavy or faster panting, drinking or drooling more than usual, then rush it to your local vet immediately as this could be a sign of heat stroke!

⚠️ LUNGWORM, THE SILENT KILLER ⚠️

The lungworm is a type of parasitic worm that affects dogs that have eaten larvae found in infected slugs, snails or frogs. 🐸

Once dogs are infected, larvae live and travel in their body, especially in their heart and major blood vessels, damaging their lungs and major organs. 😔

That's why it is vital that you protect your dog from lungworms with a preventative parasite treatment or bring your pet to the vet immediately if you suspect he can be already infected.

We all know dogs love to go for long walks! 🐶 But what about your puppy? Should you go on long walks with them?

Puppies can sometime struggle to match our pace, so it is important to keep that in mind whenever you take them on a walk!

In terms of length, a good rule of thumb is that puppies should have no more than 5 minutes of exercise for each month of age, two times a day. So a five-month-old puppy would have no more than 25 minutes of walking twice a day – and this should be decreased in larger breeds.

Playtime is also very important for a puppy as it helps their development!

Are human meds safe for pets? 💊 🐱 🐶

No, you shouldn't give your pet any human medication unless told otherwise by your vet. Even if some medication are deemed safe for human consumption, it doesn't mean it is safe for your pet.

Antihistamines, for example, contain different ingredients, and you may not know how your dog can react so it's always important to talk to your vet first!

⚠️ Pain killers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen are also toxic to dogs! ⚠️

If any doubt, speak to your local vet or book an appointment. They will be able to tell what's wrong with your pet and give them the proper treatment.

💙 When to apply flea treatment?

There is no wrong or right moment to apply flea treatment during the day. However, it is important that you follow any instructions given by your vet. Any lapse is the open door to a flea infestation 😱

💙 Why is my flea treatment not working?

Flea treatment dosage is determined by your pet's weight. Not pointing finger of course, but if your pet has put on weight the flea treatment may not be as efficient as it used to be anymore. For spot-on flea treatment, you also need to make sure it is applied correctly and avoid for your pet to stay in the rain or have a wash for a few days.

💙 Where to put the flea treatment?

A spot-on flea treatment will need to be applied on the skin, not the fur of your pet. It is therefore very important to part any fur so that the skin is visible before applying the treatment.

It's important to be mindful when getting a new puppy, that whilst the first 24-hours will be extremely exciting for you, it can be a stressful time for your puppy. 🐶

Bear in mind that they have just been separated from their mum and will not know what is going on, or that they are moving to a new home. We'd recommend doing whatever you can to create a relaxed and settled environment for them. 💕

Perhaps restrict your pup's access to a certain area of the house at first and then, over time, your puppy can get used to more and more space and can explore the rest of your house. 🏡

Try not to overload your pup, as you don’t want to make them feel overwhelmed. Let them come to you when they want to play- they will do so when they are ready. Also, ensure you give them lots of cuddles to help them feel safe, loved and protected. 😍💙

In the first few months, having a crate to go back to when things get a bit too much and to sleep inside can often help puppies to feel calmer and less stressed!

Many sugar-free gums and candies now contain xylitol, a sugar substitute that is highly toxic to dogs. 🐶🍭🍬

Even a small amount of xylitol can cause a steep drop in your dog’s blood sugar, leading to seizures, and possible coma or death.

Ingestion of any sweets or cakes should lead to an immediate call to your veterinarian!

The grass seeds are at it again! ⚠️ And they are more and more visible in our environment through the rewilding effort of our commons. These pointed grasses hide in long grass patches all around our parks. Their seeds are arrow-shaped and can enter a dog’s skin very easily! Once it’s in, they can travel through your pet’s tissues, causing infections and serious other health issues. Grass seeds can also enter your dog’s nose and get lodged in their throat or into their lungs, which can prove fatal if not dealt with in time. After each walk with your dog, it is important to check: - Is your dog sneezing? - Is your dog shaking its head a lot? - Is your dog gnawing at its paw? - Is your dog scratching its ear? - Is one of its eyes squinting? If you've noticed one or more of these symptoms, please get in touch with your local vet as soon as you can! Your vet will then be able to remove the grass seed under anaesthetic. Its a stress-free and pain-free procedure and will keep your dog from experiencing more advanced issues down the line! ❤️🐶
