Do you know how to spot blue-green algae?

Exposure to blue-green algae can cause long-term health problems in pets and can even be fatal. By drinking from or swimming in contaminated water, pets are at a high risk of becoming seriously ill.

Over the summer, our vets see a lot of dogs who have issues because of grass seeds. It is important to contact your vet immediately if you suspect your dog has an injury caused by a grass seed.

If walking your dog in long grass or woodland areas, we recommend checking your dog over and brushing away any grass seeds after the walk is done. Pay particular attention to paws, ears, eyes, and armpits.

Do you have questions about neutering your cat? It's something we strongly advise as it has many benefits for them and helps to tackle the number of stray cats in the UK.

Female cats will benefit from reduced risk of unwanted pregnancy, certain health conditions and even certain types of cancer. For male cats, neutering reduces their urge to fight other males, lessening the chance of certain diseases, and it also means they are less likely to mark their territory around your home.

It’s important to keep your pet hydrated all year round as it delivers lots of benefits to your pets health, but especially during the warmer months. Cats and dogs both sweat through their paw pads, so as they’ll do this more now it’s hot, they will need to be provided with more fresh water. 💧

Pets can develop skin allergies at any age, so it's important to make sure you know the signs and symptoms. Dogs may start scratching excessively, whereas cats may start licking their belly, back, or behind their legs more than usual.

The most common skin allergy is called atopic dermatitis, and although it's a lifelong condition, it can be controlled and managed, meaning your pet can lead a normal and healthy life. Treatments may include medication, supplements, or even newer monoclonal antibody treatments.

The law is changing - from 10 June 2024, cats in England must be microchipped and registered on a database by the time they’re 20 weeks old. The penalty for not microchipping your cat could be a £500 fine. A microchipped cat has a much higher chance of being reunited - please microchip your cat. Dogs can pick up kennel cough multiple times throughout their lives, but in most cases, they can recover in a few weeks.

During this time, you should encourage your dog to rest and avoid collar and lead activity as it could put more strain on their respiratory system. You should talk to your vet if your dog’s cough persists, or if you notice any changes in behaviour such as a reduced appetite or less energy.

Is your rabbit protected against Myxomatosis? This highly infectious viral disease has a very high mortality rate and can leave your rabbit prone to other infections.

The best way to protect your rabbit is to vaccinate them, especially as there is no cure if your rabbit becomes infected. There's also ways to reduce the risk of your rabbit catching the virus.

Pets can develop allergies to certain plants, pollen, and insects. If you notice any hay-fever like symptoms, such as itchy, watery eyes or sneezing, contact your vet for advice. They can help you identify the causes and ease your pet’s symptoms.

Making sure your rabbit has the right diet will not only keep them healthy and full of the nutrients they need, but can also improve their dental health and regulate their digestive system.

Hay and grass should make up around 80% of your rabbit's diet, this can be fresh or dried grass, but they should have unlimited access to it. They can have a small amount of vegetables each day, around 15% of their diet. Rabbit-safe vegetables include broccoli, carrots, courgette and green beans.

This little cutie pie is Fluffy <3 Fluffy was with us today for her laparoscopic spay. A laparoscopic spay differs from a non laparoscopic spay in that we use an endoscope to view the ovaries and remove them. This means that Fluffy has two tiny incisions rather than one large incision - it is less invasive than the "traditional spay", less painful and means that Fluffy will have a quicker recovery :D Fluffy was such a brave girl and was soon up and walking around, showing off her new outfit <3 Well done for being so brave Fluffy, we can't wait to see you in a few days for your post op check :D

This handsome boy is Archie <3 You may recognise Archie as he was one of our facebook stars back in May. We diagnosed him with diabetes mellitus back in January. Since then, Archie's mum has been a star, injecting him with his insulin twice daily, and working hard to get his weight down (weight is an important factor in diabetes control). When he was first diagnosed in January he was on a high dose of insulin, and we are pleased to say he is now on a lower dose. Archie still comes in regularly for blood glucose curves as we have to continue to ensure he is receiving the correct insulin dose. Archie is super confident and settled with us - you can see from the photo, he enjoys chilling is his carrier (even falling asleep sometimes!)

This handsome chap is Wilbur <3 Wilbur visited us today to have his teeth cleaned under anaesthetic. It is so important to get your pets' teeth checked regularly as dental disease can be very painful and can result in other health issues too. Luckily for Wilbur, we just needed to give him a scale and polish - we didn't need to remove any teeth :D Wilbur has been a fantastic patient today - he has been so brave and was extremely affectionate to us! After he woke from his anaesthetic, Wilbur wolfed down the food we offered him and was soon demanding more! Well done for being so brave Wilbur and we will see you soon for your post-op check <3

Should your pet require additional services or hospitalisation, we also have the benefit of access to our 24 hour centre in Hendon. Here we have advanced diagnostic tools including Ultrasound and MRI, and can perform larger surgical procedures such as soft tissue and orthopaedic surgery. We understand the importance of empowering you to care for your pets. That’s why we have a range of free nurse clinics designed to support you and them. These include: •Teaching you how to tablet your pet •Weighing and worming •Dental checks •Initial puppy and kitten checks to make sure your new bundle of fluff goes home with you in nose-to-tail good health Cat owners will know that visiting the vets is often stressful for their pets. We’re dedicated to making their visits to us as enjoyable and relaxing as possible – that’s why we are an accredited cat-friendly clinic. Currently, cats can wait behind a divider screen in our waiting room. Nervous cats can even have their own hideaway tent in their cages if they stay at the practice. Should your pet need to stay with us during the day, we aim to give the a five star hospitalisation service! All kennels are neatly padded out with comfy vet beds, litter trays and water. Regular checks and even more regular cuddles are given! The branch is open weekdays and Saturday afternoons with after-hours support being provided by the Hendon 24 hour centre.
