TODAY’S TIP: *CLOSE WINDOWS AND THE SUN ROOF TO PREVENT ‘FISHING’
Leaving windows and the sunroof even slightly open invites fishing for items through the gap by hand or with, say, a bent coat hanger, which could also be used to unlock a door for them to get in. Thieves can be ingenious. Don’t give them the opportunity.

We have recently seen an increase in vehicle crime in the Erewash area including theft of vehicles and theft from vehicles. Tools being stolen from vans or broken into to check for tools appears to be on the increase in the area.
Having your car or van broken into and losing your things to thieves can be very distressing. We’ll publish on here a few simple tips and reminders over the coming days to help you keep your vehicle, and what’s in it, safe. To see a full list please visit our website:

| Keeping your vehicles safe

TODAY’S TIP: *TOOLS IN VANS
Vans are often targeted by thieves for the tools stored inside. Try not to leave tools in vans wherever possible. If you have to leave tools in a van overnight, it's a good idea to mark them clearly with your name / company name and address using paint pens and seal with a clear lacquer spray. Alternatively, you can use a variety of other property marking systems. Items that are clearly marked are less desirable and more difficult to sell on.
Consider using a lockable cabinet within your van to store tools – a number of security rated products are available. Small cameras are also designed to record inside vehicles. Visit Secured by Design for more details.
You can also take photographs of items of value, make a note of the serial numbers and consider registering them online at a property register site.

TODAY’S TIP: *ALWAYS LOCK IT!
This may seem obvious however, fuelling up or popping back into your house to get something are perfect examples of how easy it is to turn your back for a moment and forget your vehicle is unsecured. So get into the habit of locking your vehicle even if you’re only going to be away from it for a moment.
If your vehicle has wing mirrors that fold in automatically when locked, make sure you lock it properly. Criminal gangs are looking for vehicles like these where the wing mirrors are still out because it is clear to them that the vehicle has been left unlocked.

Your mate squaring up?

You know your mates best but if they're staring shouting or squaring up, its a definite sign to get them to walk away!

We're often not at our best selves when we're drunk. A quick apology on behalf of a friend can help clear up a misunderstanding before things could kick off.

If you feel safe to, you can step in and make eye contact with your mate, it can be easier to talk them down.

Taking your mate by the shoulders and getting them to walk away with you rather than holding them back often works best.

If there are other mates out with you, get them to give you a hand. The more people that stand up and step in, the more likely things will calm down.

But.... if it feels like the situation is getting heated or violent then call 999 now or 101 in a non emergency situation.

| 🎅 Grow, Grow, Grow...Merry Christmas

Our SNT officers once again targeted a cannabis grow in an industrial premise this week following ongoing investigations and reports of suspicious activity from members of the local community.

Amongst other items, a mobile telephone was seized and details were obtained of an individual at the premises who will be helping with our ongoing investigation.

Inside the property we found it had been kitted out with equipment to allow the production of cannabis. Approx. 50 mature plants were seized and these have since been sent for destruction.

We'd like to thank local residents and members of the community who come together to help tackle crime within their area. This kind of information is invaluable when combined with our own intelligence and investigations.

2. Pet fraud
3. Online shopping fraud
4. Social media and email account hacking
5. Courier fraud
6. Romance fraud
7. Gift card fraud
8. Charity fraud

What can you do to protect yourself from fraud this Christmas?

- Protect your online accounts: the password you use for your email account should be different from all your other passwords for online accounts. Use three random words to create a strong and memorable password, and enable 2-step verification (2SV).
- Do your research: make sure you do a thorough online search before making any big financial decisions. Check the authenticity of the company or organisation before making any investment, donation to charity or booking tickets for a concert, event or holiday.
- Be cautious about how you send money: avoid paying via bank transfer and don’t be pressured into transferring large sums of money. Any trusted organisation will not force you to transfer money on the spot and only a fraudster will try to rush you. For making purchases online, use a credit card if you can.
- Be wary of unsolicited emails, texts, QR codes or contact on social media: from seeing unbelievably good deals on tickets or holidays, to seeing a suspiciously cheap prices on items advertised, always double check the authenticity of what you are going to buy online before making a purchase or paying upfront fees.
- Report suspicious emails by forwarding them to: [email protected]
- Report suspicious text messages or spam calls free of charge to 7726

If you’ve lost money or provided your financial information to someone, notify your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud at https://orlo.uk/cjWsJ or by calling 0300 123 2040. In Scotland, call Police Scotland on 101.

| Fraud Awareness

Christmas can be a magical time for most, the tinsel, the presents, the group outings but it can also be a prime time for fraudsters to take advantage. For some it can evoke feelings of loneliness which unfortunately can make people particularly vulnerable to a type of scam known as Romance Fraud.

Romance scams involve people being duped into sending money to criminals who go to great lengths to gain their trust and convince them that they are in a genuine relationship.

Romance fraud is far more common than you think. The increase of dating online has made this kind of crime much more prevalent. The scammers are very skilful at preying on other peoples’ vulnerabilities.
These are just a few things that you can look out for if you chat to/meet someone online.

~They develop strong feelings for you quickly or tell you that they love you.
~They ask to communicate with you off the platform that you meet on.
~They work in senior roles (CEO or manager) or in another professional capacity, such as surgeon/dentist.
~They work in remote locations , like oil rig or war-torn country.
~When you arrange to meet, they meeting gets cancelled because of an emergency.
~They seem too good to be true {wealth, looks, personality}.
~Images appear to have been professionally taken, such as highly posed, exotic or interesting locations or dressed in military or other uniform.
~As they begin to gain your trust, they confide in you stories or family illness, bad luck, financial difficulties.

These criminals are experienced at pulling people in, making them feel special and using that connection and emotional vulnerability to defraud their victims.
Please be aware that there are people out there preying on peoples’ loneliness to extort money from them.
If you believe that you have been defrauded in any way, or you are communicating currently to someone suspicious please contact.

| Cannabis Grow

Our SNT officers visited a property yesterday following several reports of suspicious activity from members of the local community.

Upon attending the property a male at the address immediately ran from officers but after giving chase he was soon apprehended and placed under arrest on suspicion of the production of cannabis to allow our investigations to continue.

Inside the property we found it had been heavily modified to allow the production of Cannabis and 54 mature plants were seized and will be destroyed. Other plant and equipment found was subsequently taken down and dismantled.

T/Sgt Limb said " This is another great example of the local community coming together to help tackle crime within their community. I would like to offer my thanks to everyone who takes the time to report this kind of suspicious activity."
