Very sad news. The hedgehog with the ring around its neck passed away in the night.
On examination I found its wounds were much worse than initially thought. The ring must have been around its neck for many months and was gradually choking the poor creature. At least it died warm, pain free and also free of maggots.
And to the lady who said that I should have taken it to the vets and had it gassed down, (one of my pet hates are people who give advice when it isn’t asked for) to gas down any animal that is that badly wounded would have killed it anyway.
I am upset because of not only the fact that I tried so hard to save this little one, but also of the person who allowed this to happen.
I repeat what I’ve said before,
When God created the world, he made one big mistake, he made man.

Into its third month, the cull here in Derbyshire relentlessly grumbles on, and despite the hopelessness often felt by many of us after seeing sett upon sett totally destroyed, we are still out there.
Checking setts by day, holding onto any chance that some have possibly survived, and walking paths at night in the quest to stop shooters from killing any badgers that remain.
So many setts, that have stood for centuries, are gone. Where once you’d see diggings, latrines and tracks, there’s nothing but leaf litter and empty entrances slowly taking the land to a depressingly barren feel.
Miles of countryside once dotted with setts are now just void of one of our most iconic native species. Even setts which had survived last years cull, are being found blocked with rubble, covered with rubbish or trampled on by cattle.
And yet, despite this mass extermination of the species that is being held solely responsible for the spread of bTB to cattle, farms are still going down with it.
Most famously, just last week, was Jeremy Clarkson’s farm. He had previously openly admitted to killing all the badgers on his land, and yet despite the absence of the apparent prime suspect, his cattle are now under lockdown. He has even spoken about his confusion on the matter, and maybe if he thinks about it hard enough, he will realise what we’ve known all along- that badgers are, after all, not to blame.

🦔 Goodbye boys! 👋 Take care out there in the big, wide world 🤎
