❤️🦔❤️SANDY❤️🦔❤️
Sandy came in on 22 May from Healing, and I started her straight away on treatment for internal parasites. She's responded really well and was due her last treatment at the end of this week. Yesterday morning, she gave birth to two hoglets and sadly rejected both of them. They were both cold and lifeless, but still alive, so I picked them both up and warmed them in my hands, whilst waiting for the heat pad to heat up, then placed them in a fleece pocket and gently warmed them through. Once warmed, I made up some formula to hand fed them both. The little boy took the formula straight away, but the little girl really wasn't too well and had sadly passed away.
Sandy just wasn't interested in her hoglets at all, I'm sure she was a first time mum, and not wanting to cause her more stress, I moved her from our hedgehog hospital to our back enclosure where she could rest in the calm and quiet.
I've been hand feeding the little boy hoglet, who weighed just 13.5gms, every hour and in-between feeds at 9.30pm last night, I decided to check on Sandy. I was totally surprised to find that she had given birth to two more hoglets and they were suckling on her, so I decided to reunite the little boy in the house with her and her siblings and hope that she would accept him back. I placed him between the two hoglets, covered them all up and walked away, praying he would make it. He's a much better chance of survival with them than me, especially as newborns have such a very low chance of survival when being hand reared. I will now leave Sandy and her hoglets, changing her food and water daily and check her in a weeks time. Here's hoping she's a good mummy and they all make it 🦔🙏🦔
