Confirmed avian influenza - near Bodmin - North Cornwall

Keep up to date with what level of biosecurity you should be taking

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/bird-flu-avian-influenza-latest-situation-in-england

Two further cases of Highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 have been confirmed. At premises as follows:

• near Bromborough, Wirral, Merseyside - although this infected premises is in England, part of the SZ extends into Flintshire, Wales.
• near Bodmin, North Cornwall, Cornwall.
3km Protection Zones and 10km Surveillance Zones have been put in place around each premises.

In addition, an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory biosecurity measures is in force across Great Britain and a regional Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) with mandatory housing and biosecurity measures is also in force and covers the following:

• North Yorkshire
• York
• An area in Shropshire
• The East Riding of Yorkshire
• The City of Kingston upon Hull
• Lincolnshire
• Norfolk
• Suffolk.

All bird keepers in these areas must keep their birds housed to protect them from bird flu. This applies to pet birds, commercial flocks and just a few birds in a backyard flock.

All bird keepers should remain vigilant and follow the housing and stringent biosecurity measures in addition to following any Protection/Surveillance Zone restrictions in their area to prevent future outbreaks.

Please check the disease control zones on our avian influenza interactive map: https://defra.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=8cb1883eda5547c6b91b5d5e6aeba90d to see what restrictions are in place and the biosecurity guidance available at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/bird-flu-avian-influenza-how-to-prevent-it-and-stop-it-spreading.

If you are considering purchasing lilies for your loved one this Valentine's Day and they have a cat, maybe reconsider.

⚠️They are highly toxic to cats and can cause kidney failure if not treated quickly.

If you are concerned about your pet, book an appointment to see one of our vets.

🐱 Be sure to share this with your cat-owning friends.

Rat poison ☣️

It comes in several forms - ensure this is stored correctly and used as intended

Rat poison is highly dangerous and can often be fatal if ingested

Contact your Vet immediately if you have any concerns that your pets have come into contact with rat bait

It is helpful to know how much and name of the product they have eaten

Always clear away dead vermin - these pose a risk still once dead - especially to birds of prey

Meet Doug - and his toy Fox

One morning Doug was bit out of sorts, his parents have a pet cam and thought they should review footage to see what Doug may have been up to ...

4.30am that morning Doug was viewed eating his toy Fox!!

Once examined by the Vet Tabatha it was decided to make him vomit - Veterinary Nurse Assistant Kara cared for him throughout whilst other members of the nursing team encouraged Mr Fox to come out by rocking Doug!

Doug was very lucky that his owners were so quick to notice something was wrong as it is unlikely the fox would have passed through - resulting in major surgery

A great result for Doug - not so much for Mr Fox, he's seen better days!!

Speak to your Vet if you notice these signs

https://www.kernowvetgroup.com/

For January's Walk Your Dog Month, it's important that we can understand how to tell if our dogs are in pain during their walks 🦮

Dogs are often great at hiding discomfort, but subtle signs can indicate pain – especially during walks. Here’s what to watch for to ensure your dog stays happy and healthy ✨

1. Limping or Favoring a Leg
One of the clearest signs is if your dog limps, avoids using one leg, or shifts weight to one side. This can indicate joint pain, muscle strain, or injury.

2. Changes in Gait
A stiff, unsteady, or hopping gait can indicate pain, as your dog may try to minimise pressure on certain joints.

3. Reluctance to Walk or Exercise
A dog that usually loves walks but becomes hesitant to leave the house might be experiencing chronic pain or discomfort.

4. Excessive Panting or Whining
While panting is normal during exercise, excessive panting, whining, or vocalising may signal pain or discomfort, even if the temperature is mild.

5. Frequent Sitting or Lying Down
If your dog sits or lies down frequently during walks, they may be trying to relieve pain or avoid using certain joints.

What to Do if You Notice These Signs:

Rest and Monitor: Give your dog time to rest and avoid strenuous activity.

Consult Your Vet: If signs persist, schedule a vet visit to explore treatment options.
