❌❌ RHDV OUTBREAK❌❌
We have seen a number of sudden onset deaths in rabbits over the last couple of weeks which we believe may be a RHDV outbreak.
The rabbit haemorrhagic disease virus (RHDV) is responsible for an acute and highly contagious disease of rabbits. It is a devastating condition that affects their liver, causes internal bleeding and death very quickly.
The disease is transmitted from rabbit to rabbit or through any objects that may have been contaminated such as bedding or clothing. Insects, fleas, flies, rodents and birds can also carry the virus.
Sadly this disease has a very high mortality rate and rabbits can die in one to three days after becoming infected. Rabbits suffering from haemorrhagic disease are often found dead with bloodstained fluid in their mouth and nose but clinical signs can include fever, depression, lack of coordination, breathing difficulties, fits, and bleeding from the nose.
This disease is one of the reasons why it is recommended to vaccinate your pet rabbits and keep their immunity levels high with annual boosters. Consult with your veterinary surgeon to provide your pet with the best possible protection.
