The National Forest

The National Forest is one of Britain's boldest envrionmental projects, creating a new Forest for the nation across 200 square miles of Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire. More than 7.8 million trees have now been planted, trebling the woodland cover and transorming the landscape. This woodland will eventually cover around a third of the Forest area to link the ancient forests of Charnwood and Needwood.

The final 2 benches are in their new home. It's been a really hard physical challenge. Pushed my carpemtry skills i'm pleased & proud of this 6 seat commission for 1 of the best national trust properties Snowshiill, a house with 'craft & heartiage' at it's heart. 🪚🪓🫶🤓

Just looking back over last 17 years of rustic carpentry....the self belief & inner confidence i had in those early days was emmence...there was alot of 'yes i can do that'....wondering were that has gone these days, guess i've learnt mostly the hard way....i'm far more cautious, slower & not so confident some days 🪓🪚

When i watch war horse i'm always reminded of not only the emotional beauty of this incredible film...but i notice the detail & nod to the craft of making a cleft chestnut, oak or ash hurdle....tis a thing a real beauty the hurdle when made correctly 🪓🪚💪🫶🤲

I'm back runnung my 1 day rustic oak milk stool course, this is a beginners introduction to the joy of green wood working, rich & jules actually have turned up at rustic towers before to make their garden bench last year, so it was lovely to have them return again with eagerness to get tools in hands & get crafting once more. Paid a visit to friend andy to help myself to the twisty hazel staffs i need for my green woodworking courses....what he does & how he manages the woods he works in is incredible to see, the quality of the product is proof is his skiils & knowlesge & the generations who have worked this woods before 🪓🪚💪🔥🫶

Recently i've been feeling unsure which foot to put forwards in all parts of my life, grief is a thing, not really sure how to navigate it....i guess only to just let it hit me & then it's like a powerful wave that just knocks you off your feet, at times i've struggled to regain my balance & forgot to take those deep breaths. My work is also causing me pain in a physical way, very recently my body is proper hurting, weak damaged knees used to never be an issue...i used to feel super strong & invincable, now i feel fragile & very unsure. I always turn to the outdoors for the reminder 'just keep taking 1 step at a time, deep breaths & try to let go of the stuff you can't control' was my mantra today

Thumb sticks, pilgrim staffs...or just a stick, out of a hedgerow or coppiced managed woodland, hazel, holly or hawthorne....i love them all twisty or straight they are all great. I run a course, a very simple, mindful & joyous green wood craft experience. Over the last 15 years i have shown litterly 1,000s of eager & willing souls the emmence pleasure of this whittling world 🪓🪚🔥🫶
