The rain is much welcomed for our grazing livestock clients, however having been so dry & grass sparse in places it may cause a new flush of grass that could predispose to hypomagnesaemia.

Not ever really understood why cattle πŸ„ & πŸ‘ get issues? Then there is a good article here. https://www.msdvetmanual.com/metabolic-disorders/disorders-of-magnesium-metabolism/hypomagnesemic-tetany-in-cattle-and-sheep

Remember a down cow πŸ„ or sheep πŸ‘ is an emergency in many cases! Call the vet even if just for advice.

When is an abscess a β€˜wenn’? If you are getting what look like abscesses at the jaw line these are caused usually be 1 of 2 bacteria that are soil based - actinibacillus lignisierii or actinimyces bovis - they do not form usual thin walled abscesses but thick walled pocketed abscesses.

Lancing rarely cures them.

So what do you do?

Please don’t lance them it usually just makes things worse and attracts flies.

β€˜Wenn’ are sensitive to iodine so for a medical treatment you can try injectable iodine and penicillin (repeat a long acting amoxicillin every 48 hours for 1 week)

But in some cases surgery to remove is the only way forward. The surgery is bloody but usually curative.

Prevention relies on ensuring iodine levels are not low. They were particularly low in many places because of last years wet πŸ’¦ weather and its impact on minerals and trace elements in grazing.

Check your cows & check your forage for iodine levels to prevent β€˜wenn’.
