Summer BBQs are a great time for family and friends, but they can pose serious risks to our furry companions. Here are some potential dangers to watch out for to keep your pets safe:

🚫 Burns: Curious pets can jump up on the BBQ and get burned by hot surfaces or food
🚫 Hot food: Swallowing hot food can cause painful stomach ulcers
🚫 Ingesting dangerous items: Bones, ribs, and skewers can cause obstructions or puncture the digestive tract
🚫 Toxic foods: Foods like onions and fatty dishes can upset your pet's stomach and lead to serious health issues

Keep a close eye on your pets during BBQs and make sure they stay clear of the grill and food table. If your pet does get into something they shouldn't, contact us at East Lincolnshire Emergency Vets immediately.

Enjoy your BBQs safely this summer! 🌞🐶🐱

Pyometra is a serious womb infection that can be life-threatening if left untreated. It's caused by the womb filling with pus, leading to kidney failure, toxaemia, dehydration, and even death. Often occurring a few weeks after a female's season, pyometra is usually due to a bacterial infection.

Signs to watch for:

🐾 Loss of appetite

🐾 Lethargy

🐾 Excessive thirst

🐾 Possible vaginal discharge

As the infection progresses, your pet may become very sick and unwilling to move. The only cure is often emergency surgery to remove the womb.

🚑 If you recognise any of these signs, contact your vet or us immediately on (01507) 304 550. Acting fast could save their life.

You've probably heard of our Emergency Monthly Pet Care Plan, which allows you to spread the cost of emergency vet fees throughout the year. But did you know it also covers bunnies? 🐰

Unfortunately, just like dogs and cats, rabbits can need emergency care too. Health issues, such as fractures, flystrike, and gut stasis, which can lead to a lack of appetite, lethargy, and bloated appearance, need prompt veterinary attention.

Take advantage of the opportunity to have your bunnies' emergencies always covered. Sign up today 🔗 https://eastlincsemergencyvets.co.uk/emergency-monthly-pet-care-plan

Keep Your Dogs Cool on these summer days:

Top Tips! 🐶🌞

As the temperatures rise, it's crucial to ensure our furry friends stay cool and comfortable. Here are three essential tips to help your dogs beat the heat, especially for those adorable but heat-sensitive brachycephalic breeds (think Bulldogs, Pugs, and Shih Tzus).

1. Plenty of Fresh Water: 💧
Hydration is key! Offer them continual fresh water today. Adding ice cubes can be an extra cool treat. Take care if they are at the beach to ensure freshwater rather than letting them just drink sea water !

2. Cool Resting Spots: 🏖️
Ensure your dog has a shady, cool place to relax. Indoors, fans or Air conditioning . Outside, a shady area with a cooling mat or damp towel works wonders. Sometimes you have to force some dogs to get out of the sun where they are laying and panting !

3. Mind Their Exercise: 🚶‍♂️
Limit exercise during the hottest parts of the day. Opt for early morning or late evening walks when it's cooler. For brachycephalic breeds, make it as short as possible on those stifling hot days.

Let's make this summer enjoyable and safe. If you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us!

We know how good summer days spent at the beach with your pet feel. 😎

But did you know that drinking too much saltwater can lead to poisoning?

If this happens, you may notice:

👉 Increased thirst

👉 Vomiting

👉 Diarrhoea

So, keep a close eye on your pet at the beach, and always carry fresh water with you to keep them hydrated.

In case of an emergency, call us on (01507) 304 550 📲

Living close to the seaside is a treat, but it also comes with unique dangers for our furry friends. At East Lincs Emergency Vets, we often see emergency cases over the summer from beach visits. Here are 5 beach dangers to watch out for:

🏖️ Heatstroke: keep pets cool and hydrated. Avoid the midday heat and provide plenty of shade and water.

🏖️ Glass/sharp objects: be cautious of broken glass and sharp objects in the sand that can injure paws.

🏖️ Cliff edges: keep pets on a lead near cliffs to prevent dangerous falls.

🏖️ Drowning: always keep an eye on your pets when they’re near the water.

🏖️ Coastal wildlife: watch out for jellyfish, dead crabs, and other hazards that can sting, bite, or be toxic if ingested.

Stay vigilant and keep your beach trips fun and safe! If an emergency arises, contact us on (01507) 304 550. We're here to help! 🐶🐱

Yes, along with summer, comes the typical veterinary emergencies where dogs decide themselves what they mistakenly think is sensible to eat.

On the left is chocolate vomit (not sure if there is a more technical term …), and on the right is a corn on the cob AFTER it has been surgically removed from the intestines.

🥵 HEAT STROKE 🥵

1. Ring vet and let them know you are on your way
2. Get them wet 💦
3. Travel to vets immediately with air conditioning full blast

This will give your dog the best chance ♥️

Of course prevention is best, keep dogs out of the heat, avoid walks on hot days, keep hydrated and NEVER leave a dog in a car on a hot day

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

As the weather finally starts to warm up for summer, I would like to show you one of the most powerful videos I have seen reminding us of how HOT it can get for a dog left inside a parked car, even with the window down.

Over the summer we always see a number of dogs as emergencies, suffering from heat stroke - it becomes even worse in dog breeds with a squashed face (known technically as Brachycephalic).

Thanks Dr. Ernie Ward for creating this powerful video:
