There are lots of different litter trays available, but many of them are not fit for purpose! So what is the best type of litter tray for cats?

Let's look at the options:

🐱Design

▪️Both hooded and open litter trays are available. Many people prefer hooded trays because they prevent litter from being scraped or tracked onto the floor, but they can limit your cat's movement whilst using their tray.

▪️Hooded trays offer some privacy, but they can be an issue in multi-cat households, where cats can block each other from accessing the tray, or ambush each other after use.

▪️Hooded litter trays also hold the smell of soiled litter inside, which is great for us, but not so nice for a cat. Urine and faeces is 'out of sight, out of mind' meaning hooded trays may not cleaned as often as they should be.
I always say it's like us using a festival toilet every day, eww 🤢💩🤣

▪️The flap on the front of hooded trays can also deter cats from using them, so it's best to remove these altogether.

▪️If you do want to give your cat a hooded tray, remember to purchase the largest one possible and remove any soiled litter at least twice a day.

▪️Open trays provide a lot more room and have wide exit/entry point and/or multiple entry points, which is great for multi-cat households 👍

▪️Cats often prefer open trays as they provide room to move around and dig, although they can be a bit messy.

▪️Corner litter trays are usually too small for cats to use. They may seem convenient for us, but are not comfortable for cats.

▪️Automatic litter trays can be noisy, small and expensive - there are more cat friendly litter trays available 👎

🐱Size

▪️Cat behaviour experts recommend the ideal litter tray should be approximately 1.5 X the length of a cat from their nose to the base of their tail - that's pretty big!

▪️Other items such as storage containers (like the one on this post) can make excellent and inexpensive litter trays for cats.

Each cat will have their preference, so it's good to offer options until you know 👍🐈‍⬛

Puppy Parties, run by our lovely nurses, Laura and Chloe, and client care/dog trainer, Jess.
These are for puppies under 4 months old, and provide essential information about owning a puppy, whilst giving your pup time to socialise and have a positive visit at the vets! 🐾

Remember to put away football netting 🥅

Footie fever is in the air as England, Scotland and 22 other nations prepare to kick-off at Euro 2024! ⚽

We received 1,644 reports of animals getting entangled in netting in 2023, and 773 of these incidents happened in the peak months of May, June and July.

Unattended football nets can trap, injure and even kill wildlife and pets, so please remember to put nets safely away once you've finished to prevent any casualties.

A bench has been placed in honour and memory of one of our first patients, Ben, a very special 14-year-old Westie ♥️

Anyone who wishes to take a moment can sit quietly just outside our new consult room. This room has proven particularly helpful for nervous dogs or those that don't like a busy waiting room. Please feel free to request this room if you think your pet would benefit.

I know that sometimes you don’t like me because I feed on the leaves of your garden or plants.
I give you some advice though: don’t kill me with poisons that cause me pain and pollute your garden!
If you put coffee grounds around your plants I will stay away and you will nourish the soil, because coffee grounds are fertilizer!
Hair also works. If you give yourself a trim or brush your dog, put the hair in the garden. Egg shells as well.
If you see me attached to a vase don't rip me from there, my protective wrappr breaks and I'll die.
If you see I'm being followed by little virgins, don't intervene, it's my little ones that I gave birth to. They are born without a shell, they are very delicate! Then, in a short time, nature will endow them with a tiny soft shell (don't touch it, it's fragile!) ). My little few survived!
But we are animals useful for the ecosystem, our history is very ancient!
Help us survive, thank you so much 🙏 🐌"

This time of year there are a lot of messages around about not picking up baby birds. That's absolutely true for many species. But there are exceptions.

Feral pigeons were originally cliff-nesting birds so their breeding habits are different to most garden birds. If their babies are out of the nest they generally won't continue caring for them.

This little chap is too young to have left the nest as evidenced by their very short tail. Thankfully they were found by a caring person and handed to a rescue where they were found to have been attacked, likely by a cat.

We had an amazing response to our night nurse position and look forward to introducing you to a new team member of the Henlow Vets family soon.

We are pleased to be able to offer a part time position for a night nurse covering every other weekend.

Henlow Vets out of hours emergency is really different. Run exclusively for the benefit of pets registered at our practice. The owner of every pet makes a small annual contribution to fund the service giving 24hr access to veterinary advice, 24/7 nurse triage service and 24/7 access to emergency care on site at Henlow Vets.

Are you an amazingly caring registered veterinary nurse looking for a new challenge or just some extra shifts? Emergency and Critical Care certificate an advantage but not essential.
