Posted • Dr. Richard Patton, in his eye-opening book Ruined by Excess, Perfected by Lack, explains why our pets struggle with diets high in sugar and starch. Mammals—including dogs—aren’t designed to handle calorie overload (especially from soluble carbohydrates) yet most kibble is packed with soluble carbohydrates.

Dr. Patton’s advice is simple but powerful: if you do one thing for your pet’s health, start by cutting back on starch and sugar.

New Year, New Gut!!

A diverse, well-balanced gut microbiome is crucial for almost every aspect of your dog’s overall health, from nutrient absorption to cognitive functions.
When the different populations of gut bacteria are out of balance, disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), immune system reactions, and even depression can result.
You can improve your dog’s gut health by feeding a fresh, whole-food raw diet, adding probiotics, kefir and bone broths, avoiding pharmaceutical drugs and other chemicals in your dog’s environment.

We offer free support for our customers feeding a fresh raw diet, this includes switching too, please do pop in and chat with us 💬

Do you know how to spot bloat in your dog? 🤔 It can be life-threatening when a dog's stomach fills with gas and becomes twisted. It mainly occurs in deep-chested breeds, but it's good to know the warning signs.

B is for breathing problems
L is for a large stomach
O is for an over-production of saliva
A is for agitation
T is for trying to vomit.

Help raise awareness of the dangers of bloat by sharing with your dog-owner friends 🐾

Darker nights mean cats are more at risk of being involved in a road traffic accident during autumn and winter. Here are five tips from our vets to help your cat to stay safe 🐱

[Visual description: Infographic detailing five dark evening safety tips for cats. 1. Be prepared - make sure your cat is microchipped and is covered by pet insurance should anything happen. 2 - Neuter - By neutering your cat they’ll be much less likely to roam in search of a mate or get into fights. 3. Daylight - Keep your cat indoors at night and let them out during daylight hours. To help with this, you can try feeding your cat when it starts to get dark so they’ll come back for the night. 4. The secure outdoors - If you live in a busy area with lots of traffic, consider only letting your cat out into a secure garden or safe outdoor area. 5. Visibility - Reflective collars can help drivers see cats in the dark or in poor light. Choose a break-away style collar which will open if your cat catches it on a fence, branch or other object while they’re out exploring.]

As we get ready to welcome the new season, we also welcome some autumnal hazards for our furry friends. But, could you spot a poisonous plant before them? 👀

During this time, when the summer blooms turn to autumn leaves, many plants and trees start to produce berries and nuts, which can be both tempting and toxic for pets.

It’s important to be able to recognise those hidden toxic plants so you and your pet can keep away from them ⚠️

Here’s a handy list from our vets, to help you spot some of the most common ones to look out for!
