FAQ Post #1: What happens during a visit?
Usually when I arrive for a visit, the first thing I do is say hello to everybody, either with lots of fusses or a quick peek in their hiding spots. I try my best to make sure I see all cats during each visit, just to give them a quick welfare check, so that I can let you know how they’re doing. I know that they’re quite happy and comfortable in their own homes, so this is partially just for my own peace of mind, but it does also mean I’m able to let you know as soon as possible if there are any concerns. For outdoor/very nervous kitties I might not see them much, so I just keep an eye on their food/water bowls and litter trays to make sure that they’re still going about their normal business.
My next job is cleaning out their bowls and putting out fresh food and water. I generally do this as soon as possible so that they associate my arrival with food, which usually helps them feel a lot less nervous about my visits! I’ll then scoop/clean out any litter trays and complete any odd jobs that you’ve requested (bins, watering plants etc.).
For shorter visits there won’t be a lot of time left, so these are best suited to cats who don’t need (or want) a lot of company, or for short bookings (weekends away etc.). If they’re happy to interact with me then I’ll spend the remaining time playing with them or giving them a brush or strokes, otherwise I’ll leave them to their usual cat business.
Longer visits provide more time for interaction, so they’re great for cats who love company or aren’t too keen on being left alone, especially if you’re away for more than a few days. Depending on what they’d prefer we can either play games, have lots of cuddles or a good brush, whatever they like. My visits are about making sure they have everything they need and are as happy as possible, so I follow their lead.
When it’s (unfortunately) time to leave I’ll double check everything and say goodbye to my furry friends.
After each visit I’ll send an update to let you know how things went, usually once I’ve finished all visits for that session. I can provide as much or as little information as you’d like, and I always try to include photos as well!
I hope that was helpful, but if you have any more questions please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
