RSPCA Bedfordshire South Branch

RSPCA Bedfordshire South Branch We rescue, rehabilitate and rehome many animals each year in South Bedfordshire. Welcome to the Bedfordshire South Branch of the RSPCA.

We are an independent charity which carries out vital animal welfare work throughout the local area, from Luton, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard through to Ampthill, Toddington and Flitwick. We do not receive government funding and as Beds South RSPCA is a separately registered branch of the RSPCA we are responsible for raising funds locally. We also rely on the efforts of our volunteers and the

generosity of local people to continue with our work. One example of this vital work is the Branch’s fostering scheme, which was revived in November 2004 in an effort to assist the Inspectors with the temporary boarding of animals. Our team of dedicated volunteers throughout the local area look after cats and kittens, rabbits, and guinea pigs as family pets on behalf of the Branch until we can find them a new home. We hope that through the pages of our new website you can learn more about the work that we do, about the animals that we care for, and how you too can contribute to animal welfare.

Our Cleo 🐈‍⬛❤️ – A Loving Young Mum Ready for Her Forever Home!

Hello, my name is Cleo, and I’m a sweet, playful kitten around 8–9 months old. My life has already been quite a journey. I was rescued from a home with too many cats when I was very young and already pregnant — just a baby myself. Soon after I gave birth, I was taken into a loving foster home where I felt safe and cared for for the very first time.

Not only did I raise my own babies, but when a tiny orphaned kitten needed help, I stepped up and raised her as my own too. My foster family called me a supermum and treated me like a little princess — they gave me warm beds, yummy food, toys, and lots of love. I had never known such kindness before, and it changed my life.

Now that all my babies have grown up and found wonderful homes, I’ve had a chance to rest, play, and just be a kitten again myself. I love cuddles, toys, playtime, and attention. I’m curious, gentle, and affectionate — and so ready to share my love with a forever family.

I wouldn’t mind living with another friendly cat, or even a calm dog if we’re introduced slowly. I’m clean, tidy, friendly, and easygoing. I’ve been spayed (no more babies for me!), partially vaccinated, and treated for fleas and worms. Most importantly, I’m healthy, happy, and full of love.

At only 8 months old, I still have all my kitten energy — and a heart full of gratitude. Could you be the family I’ve been waiting for?

With love and purrs,
Cleo 🐾

How to keep your 🐰 🐇 safe and cool in hot weather 🌡️ 🌡️

To keep rabbits cool in hot weather, ensure they have access to shade, fresh water, and cool surfaces to lie on. Consider using fans, damp towels, and frozen bottles or ice packs to help regulate their temperature, and remember to groom them to remove excess fur.

Detailed Strategies:
Shade is crucial:
Provide ample shade throughout the day, as the sun's position changes. Use tarps, umbrellas, or move hutches to shaded areas.

Cooling surfaces:
Offer ceramic tiles, slate tiles, or even frozen bottles wrapped in towels for your rabbit to lie on. These materials will stay cool and provide a place for your rabbit to regulate their body temperature.

Hydration is key:
Ensure a constant supply of fresh, cool water is available. Consider adding ice cubes to the water to keep it cool, but avoid giving them ice directly.

Cooling accessories:
Dampen towels and drape them over the hutch or offer them for the rabbit to lie on. You can also mist your rabbit's ears with cool water, as they dissipate heat through their ears.

Ventilation and airflow:
Use fans to create a gentle breeze, but avoid directing the airflow directly onto your rabbit. Proper ventilation is essential for preventing heat buildup.

Grooming:
Regular grooming helps rabbits shed excess fur, which can trap heat.

Limit exercise:
Reduce strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day.

Indoor cooling:
If possible, move indoor rabbits to a cooler part of the house or use air conditioning.

Signs of overheating:
Fast, shallow breathing.
Hot ears.
Listlessness.
Wetness around the nose area.
Tossing back of the head while breathing rapidly from an open mouth.

If you observe any of these signs, immediately move your rabbit to a cooler area, provide fresh water, and consider contacting a veterinarian if symptoms persist.

Taking care of your pets in the hot 🥵 🔥 weather

In hot weather, we advise pet owners to prioritize shade, fresh water, and ventilation for their animals. Never leave pets in parked cars, conservatories, or similar enclosed spaces, as temperatures can rise rapidly and become dangerous. Instead, ensure pets have constant access to cool water, shaded areas, and damp towels to lie on.
Here's a more detailed breakdown of our recommendations:
General Advice:
Provide shade and fresh water: Always ensure animals have access to shade and clean water, especially during hot weather.
Ensure good ventilation: Keep animal housing well-ventilated to allow for air circulation.
Avoid transporting animals in hot weather: Unless absolutely necessary, avoid transporting animals in hot weather.
Never leave animals in cars: Temperatures inside vehicles can quickly become deadly.
Use pet-safe sun cream: Protect exposed skin on pets with pet-safe sun cream.

Ellie May is looking for a new home with no other pets. She's had a sad life and now deserves the best new home. She's for years old, neutered, vaccinated and chipped. All she need now is a loving family. If you are interested please email [email protected]

This is her story

“Little Lionheart – Ellie May”

I was never anybody’s pet, not really. I was a belly full of kittens and a trembling body on the streets, nose pressed to the wind hoping it would carry me somewhere warmer.

When they found me, I thought I’d been lucky. I purred, I trusted—how foolish. They took my babies. Sold them off like trinkets. Then they kicked me out like rubbish in the rain.

But don’t feel sorry for me. Because now… I have my patch of sun. A soft bed. A home that smells like safety and roast chicken. I have a name again, that is spoken with kindness.

But I have enemies. Two cats from outside who think I’m weak because I’m small. They puff their chests and swipe at me, like they own the sky. I fought for this peace, and sadly now I have to let it go. Can anybody offer me what I have already without the bullies who are making my life hell.
Love Ellie May x
