🚙❄️: A Quick Check Of Your Car Before You Drive Could Save a Life This Winter 💙❄️🚙🐾

As the temperature drops, cats and other small animals often seek warmth by hiding under car bonnets or in wheel arches.

Before starting your car up, take a moment to protect them by:

❄️Looking under your car for any signs of movement or fur.
❄️Tapping/knocking the bonnet, or honking your horn before starting the engine- this will give any hiding animals a chance to escape.
❄️Be extra vigilant if you park outside or in areas where cats roam.

TOXIC festive flowers (part 2)

Lily- Poisonous & very dangerous for cats. Eating just one or two leaves, or even drinking water from the vase can irreversibly damage kidneys (kidney failure), and can eventually be fatal. (While lilies don’t pose quite as severe a risk to dogs, they are still toxic.)
Symptoms can include: anorexia, lethargy, vomitting & diarrhoea, excessive drinking & urinating, drooling, seizures, death.

Ivy- Likely to cause vomiting, diarrhoea & drooling. In more severe cases, you may also see blood in vomit or faeces. Skin contact with ivy is also dangerous. It can cause conjunctivitis, itchiness and rashes.

Hops- Used to flavour beer in brewing process. Can cause rapid increase in body temperature (hyperthermia), panting, restlessness, rapid heart rate, seizures & even death.

Continuing on with more toxic festive foods!

🧀 Blue cheese:
The fungus can cause vomitting, diaroeah, a high temperature and sometimes seizures!

🥔Raw potatoes:
These contain solanine, which can be toxic to dogs, but cooking the potatoes reduces the amount of solanine making them safer.

🧄Garlic: toxic for dogs due to a compound called thiosulfate. If your pet consumes enough, it could even prove fatal without medical intervention.

🧅Onions/shallotts/ leeks: are all in the same food family as garlic, & can all cause stomach and gut irritation. They can also lead to red blood cell damage and anaemia.

Good old chocolate..

Although super tasty for us, chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine which are both toxic for dogs.
They cause stimulation of the central nervous system & heart, and can act like a diuretic making your dog urinate more, leading to dehydration. The darker the chocolate the more poisonous it is.

Symptoms can include:
*vomiting
*diarrhoea
*hyperactivity
*tremors/seizures/fits
*heart problems
*death (in severe cases)

If your pup eats chocolate their risk will depend on their weight, the type of chocolate, how much they’ve eaten, and how recently they ate it.

Next on our list is certain Meats!

Meat on the bone-Bones are dangerous, whether cooked or not, as they can get lodged in the throat, cause a puncture, or become an intestinal foreign body.

Uncooked meat- Risk of food poisoning which can result in excessive thirst, vomitting & diaroeah, restlessness, abdominal pain, hypersalivation, plus more!

Meat wrapped in string- Choking hazard and linear foreign body risk.

Pork-can be very fatty, which makes it dangerous for dogs as foods that are high in fat can lead to pancreatitis. Additionally, undercooked pork can contain parasites (worms) which can be harmful for both dogs and humans.
