Henry is a 3-year-old Irish sports horse. He lives on a small stud with 10 other young horses. Fields are not poo-picked but there is some cross-grazing with sheep. New foals are born every year. Henry is at high risk.

Ideal plan: Henry should have a FEC in March/May/July/Sept (every 8 weeks) and a Tapeworm test in Spring and Autumn. He needs encysted redworm treatment in Winter.

Henry’s FEC and tapeworm tests were high in March, so he was treated with ivermectin/praziquantel combination de-wormer. FEC was low in May and July. In September FEC was high, Tapeworm was negative, and as he needs encysted redworm treatment as well, moxidectin would be an appropriate choice.

Do you think your horse is as handsome as Henry? We’d love to see them – post their pic in the comments section 📸

Mabel is a 10-year-old cob. She lives with 3 other horses on a well-managed property with twice-weekly poo-picking, plenty of grazing, and no new horses in the last two years.

Ideal plan: Mabel is low risk, so she needs a FEC in April, June and September (every 12 weeks) and a tapeworm test in September. Mabel’s FEC was negative in April/June but in September she had a high worm egg count so needs worming. Tapeworm negative.

She doesn’t need encysted redworm or tapeworm treatment, but she does need treatment for redworms due to the high FEC. Ivermectin is a good choice.

If your horse is a beauty like Mabel we’d love to see them – post their pic in the comments section.

Reducing the amount of worm eggs on your pasture can boil down to making a few simple management changes. These changes will help reduce pasture contamination with worm eggs, reducing the need to deworm and thus reducing the spread of resistance.

Changes include:

• Poo picking (minimum twice weekly)

• Cross grazing with sheep/cattle

• Grouping horses by risk on fields

• Quarantine protocol for new arrivals

• Keep stocking density low

Confused about what de-wormer to use? Although there are lots of de-wormer brands, there are only 5 active ingredients:

• Ivermectin

• Praziquantel

• Pyrantel

• Moxidectin

• Fenbendazole

You and your vet should choose a de-wormer for your horse based on the answers to 3 questions:

• What worms are you concerned about?

• Which active ingredient treats these worms?

• What is the level of resistance to these active ingredients?

Once you’ve risk assessed and tested your horse, visit: https://smartworming.ie/de-worming-advice
