Battle of the sexes, Boys Vs Girls

When searching for your new furry friend, many people see that girls are recommended over boys and it's really unfortunate that these wonderfully sweet piggies get over looked due to misinformation. Hopefully, this article will show you the truth behind the tales.

Facts about girls

- They come into season roughly once every 16 days, this can sometimes cause hormonal upset to the sow and can cause them to show dominant and aggressive behaviours.

- Pregnancy lasts 70 days / 10 weeks and let sizes can vary from 1 to 6, I have known of a litter of 13!

- They are good in pairs and in groups

- Ideally should not be bred before 9 months to allow their hormones to settle and then to reach adult maturity/size. For example, it's the difference between a 14 year old having babies and a 23 year old, just because you can doesn't mean you should.

- Their bones do not fuse, this myth really makes me angry because it causes girls to be bred far too early and can stunt growth because their body is focusing on growing the babies instead of maturing their own body.

Facts about boys

- They reach puberty around 4 to 6 months, once they have come through it their characters are settled and are very placid.

- They are sexually active from 4 weeks of age, this is when you begin to see rumbling, it sounds like purring and they do the bum wiggle dance. Breeders should separate male and female pups around 3.5 weeks of age to avoid inter breeding.

- Many breeders pair boys too early in my opinion, I rarely let mine go before 4 months so I can be happy that the pairs they are put in are successful, this means they rarely fall out and generally are bonded for life.

- Bonding boys once their partner passes away is pretty simple, I pair for similar characters as the previous partner to have more chance of success. Buying a baby and hoping that the baby will automatically submit to their older can work but it's not guaranteed, I always suggest getting one that has clear characteristics to increase chances of a successful bond.

Please bare in mind that this is my own personal opinion based on 20 years experience in breeding, showing and rescuing guinea pigs.

Just like that all 2024 babies are reserved or have found new homes. Big THANK YOU to all my followers. Just 10 left to go to new homes in the coming week or weeks. Next litters fingers crossed should be due beginning of March, other than 7 on pregnancy watch( very small chance)
