Even if your good-doer made it out of winter slimmer than they went in, early vigilance is essential to ensure they donโ€™t put it all back on again, over the spring and summer. โ˜€๏ธ

Grass is a significant source of calories, especially at this time of year, so controlling intake can make a big difference. โœ… Just reducing your horseโ€™s time at grass may encourage them to just eat more as soon as theyโ€™re turned out so itโ€™s worth considering other ways to control grass intake:

โš ๏ธ Strip grazing โ€“ This is relatively easy to do with movable electric fencing and is definitely preferable to free range access to larger areas of lush grazing.

โš ๏ธ Track systems โ€“ These can be on grass or all-weather surfaces (with alternative forage provided) and can help encourage more movement and exercise.

โš ๏ธ Grazing muzzles โ€“ These can reduce grass intake by up to 80% and allow a horse to roam with companions who donโ€™t need to wear a muzzle.

We look at the Pros and Cons of all these methods in our new revised Equine Weight Loss Handbook. Order your free copy: https://www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk/equine-weight-loss

Both feeds contain a blend of linseed, soya and supporting antioxidants. These are incorporated into Ease & Excel Cubes, while No.21 contains our unique Outshine high oil supplement, to deliver the elevated levels of oil.

This means you need to feed slightly more, by weight, of the cubes to deliver the same amount of calories as Ease & Excel โ€œoriginalโ€.

Both products are designed to support a healthy gastric and digestive environment, while Ease & Excel โ€œoriginalโ€ was one of the first feeds ever to be accredited by BETA as suitable for horses and ponies prone to gastric ulcers.

No.21 has the added bonus of Protexin In-Feed formula, our bespoke blend of antacids, pre and probiotics and other specialist ingredients, which brings real benefits to supporting the health of the gastric and digestive tract!

The cubes are denser so fit easily into our โ€œnormalโ€ sack size, whereas No.21 is โ€œfluffierโ€ and we can only fit 15kg in a sack. This also means that a Stubbs scoop of No.24 Ease & Excel Cubes is heavier and weighs 1.8kg, compared to 1.3kg of No.21 Ease & Excel.

B.F. SKINNER

Skinner further developed the reinforcement theory.

Positive Reinforcement

Skinner conducted experiments based on the principle that an action followed by a pleasant response is more likely to be repeated than one with a non pleasant or no response.

Skinner showed how positive reinforcement worked by placing a hungry rat in his Skinner box.

The box contained a lever on the side, and as the rat moved about the box, it would accidentally knock the lever.

Immediately it did so a food pellet would drop into a container next to the lever.

The rats quickly learned to go straight to the lever after a few times of being put in the box.
The consequence of receiving food if they pressed the lever ensured that they would repeat the action again and again.

Positive reinforcers are favorable events or outcomes that are presented after the behavior.

In positive reinforcement situations, a response or behaviour is strengthened by the addition of praise or a direct reward.

Negative Reinforcement

The rat experienced an unpleasant electric current which caused it some discomfort.
As the rat moved about the box it would accidentally knock the lever.

Immediately it did so the electric current would be switched off.

The rats quickly learned to go straight to the lever after a few times of being put in the box.
The consequence of escaping the electric current ensured that they would repeat the action again and again.

Negative reinforcers involve the removal of an unfavorable events or outcomes after the display of a behavior.

In these situations, a response is strengthened by the removal of something considered unpleasant.

Starch is made up of lots of individual glucose molecules. Micronising helps break the long chains into shorter ones so that they are more easily digested and further broken down to glucose, in the horseโ€™s stomach and small intestine. ๐Ÿค“

For horses prone to gastric ulcers, starch intake should be controlled as it can increase the acidity levels within the stomach and, therefore, the risk of ulceration. โœ‹

Weโ€™ve developed low starch feeds to suit a range of workloads and calorie requirements. ๐Ÿฅฐ

21/07/2023

Equine Cushingโ€™s Disease, which is more correctly known as Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction (PPID), is a complex hormonal condition caused by dysfunction of a gland called the pituitary gland, which lies at the base of the brain.

Although the cause of the condition is not completely understood, it is thought that as part of the ageing process some horses develop enlargement of part of the pituitary gland (the pars intermedia), which produces excessive hormones that are important in controlling various body functions. These hormones are known as POMC hormones (pro-opiomelanocortin-derived peptides) and include MSH (melanocyte stimulating hormone), CLIP (corticotropin-like intermediate lobe peptide), beta endorphin, and ACTH (adrenocorticotrophic hormone). As the abnormal functioning of the gland produces an excessive amount of a range of different hormones, clinical signs can be variable from horse to horse.

Although typically considered to be an older horse disease, affecting horses over 20 years old, cases as young as seven have been diagnosed and PPID should be considered in any horse showing the typical clinical signs.

The most consistent and obvious clinical sign is hirsutism, or the presence of an abnormally long and curly coat. Although this is not seen in every case, its appearance is typical. The classical curly coat is often preceded by years of late shedding of the winter coat.

The most clinically relevant and serious clinical sign of PPID is laminitis. It is thought that over 80% of horses with laminitis have the disease as a result of a hormonal abnormality, most commonly PPID. It is therefore important that any horse with laminitis is tested for PPID as a matter of course. Getting the PPID under control is an important part of the management of affected cases.

Other clinical signs include increased drinking and urination, lethargy, weight loss, muscle loss, excessive sweating, and poor performance. Many horses have a bulge above their eyes due to unusual fat deposition. Severely affected horses can have reduced immunity and are prone to recurrent infections such as foot abscesses, tooth root abscesses, and other secondary infections. They may also take longer to heal from problems such as minor wounds and may develop liver disease.

PPID can be diagnosed by a simple blood test in the vast majority of cases. In less obvious cases, especially in younger horses that are just developing the disease, a more complex type of test needs to be completed looking at changes in hormone levels in response to the injection of certain hormones.

Excellent control of the vast majority of cases is achieved with treatment with Pergolide (Prascend) alongside lifelong routine care including a suitable worming program, teeth care, foot care, and vaccinations.

Your veterinarian is the best person to discuss the disease and its potential effects on your horse or pony; please do not hesitate to contact the practice to discuss this in more detail.

Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent your horse or pony from developing PPID. However, with readily available blood tests we can detect and treat cases far earlier and more effectively, leading to many years of a good quality of life.

A horse that has been diagnosed with Cushing's disease will require a specialised diet. As with any horse, the main proportion of their diet should be made up of forage. NSC (non-structural carbohydrate) intake should be reduced, and feeds containing wholegrain cereals and molasses should be removed from the diet.

14/07/2023

Atypical myopathy (also known as โ€˜sycamore poisoningโ€™) is a severe and potentially fatal muscle disorder of horses caused by eating sycamore โ€˜helicopterโ€™ seeds and, to a lesser extent sycamore leaves, that fall onto pasture in the autumn & winter or sycamore seedlings which grow in the spring. The seeds and seedlings contain a toxin known as hypoglycin A (HGA). The toxin slows or stops energy production in muscle cells and particularly affects the heart and the muscles which enable the horse to stand and breathe.

The sycamore tree is a member of the Acer family. Research indicates that it is mainly the sycamore that contains HGA. There are over 25 species of Acer tree but not all of them have HGA in their seeds. However, it can be difficult to distinguish between the different species. The amount of the toxin in sycamore seeds varies and it is not understood how many seeds have to be eaten before a horse may show signs of Atypical Myopathy.

Atypical Myopathy, which has a rapid onset, can affect individual horses or several horses in the same group. It appears that some horses may be more susceptible to the toxin than others. This may be due to genetic differences or differing gazing habits. Cases often follow a sudden adverse change in weather conditions, such as a frost or heavy rain.

Horses and ponies of any age, breed, s*x and height can develop Atypical Myopathy although there is some evidence which suggests that young horses might be more severely affected, possibly because they typically spend more time outside and grazing, and thus have an increased chance of eating the sycamore seeds or seedlings.

The survival rate in affected horses is around 30-40% and is highly dependent on rapid diagnosis and treatment.

What are the signs of atypical myopathy?
Muscle weakness, soreness or stiffness; horses may struggle to walk, stand or breathe
Horses appear dull with low hanging heads
Lethargy/fatigue
Muscle trembling
Colic like symptoms (e.g. shivering and sweating) except the horse still has an appetite
Brown or dark red urine
Some horses may develop heart & respiratory problems
Loss of ability to stand.
In some horses the re**al temperature, heart rate and respiratory rate may be normal.

Atypical Myopathy is not contagious.

How is Atypical Myopathy confirmed & treated?
Diagnosis is confirmed based on a clinical examination, grazing history and a variety of laboratory tests.

As a confirmation of diagnosis may take several days, if Atypical Myopathy is suspected then treatment is often started before confirmation has been received. Unfortunately, there is no anti-toxin, but some medications can be used to help stop absorption of the toxin from the intestinal tract. Severely affected horses often need to be admitted to a specialist equine hospital for round the clock intensive care including intravenous fluid therapy and anti-inflammatory medication.

If horses survive the first few days of treatment, they usually recover completely, although this may take several months.
When a case is suspected or diagnosed, field companions should be removed from the pasture and have blood samples taken for muscle enzyme analysis.

How can I reduce the risk of Atypical Myopathy on my pasture?
There are practical measures you can take to minimise the risk of Atypical Myopathy to your horses:

Regularly check your pasture and neighbouring areas for acer/sycamore plants and seeds. Some โ€˜helicopterโ€™ seeds can travel up to 200m.
Avoid letting horses graze pastures with overhanging sycamore trees in the autumn.
If horses have to remain in pasture where there are sycamore trees, fence off areas where seeds and leaves fall.
Clear fallen sycamore leaves and seeds from grazing areas.
In the spring, it is recommended that seedlings are mowed and the cuttings collected & removed as the HGA remains in the plant material after it has been cut.
Provide clean, easily accessible water.
Provide access to adequate grass and feed supplementary forage during the autumn.
Reduce stock density so that there is enough good grazing for every horse.
You can test for the presence of HGA in your own pasture. This can be done by submitting a sample to the RVC Comparative Neuromuscular Diseases Laboratory (using a sample submission form available online. A fee is payable.).
Even if your pasture contains sycamore trees and has been grazed by horses for many years without a problem, this does not mean it is safe. For reasons unknown, some horses do not seem to be affected by the toxin even though they are potentially exposed to it. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing which horses these are.
