Pet Health Check – only £24.99!* 🩺

The festivities may be over, but your furry friends might still feel the effects! From gobbling goodies, to the excitement of visitors, the holiday season can take its toll.

💡Your pet can’t tell you what’s wrong, but we can:
☑️ Weight and body: That extra snacking, chilly weather and salty pavements can all add up!
☑️ Behaviour changes: The stress of changes in routine and noisy celebrations can affect your pet’s well-being.
☑️ Joints and mobility: Cold weather can affect mobility by making your pet’s joints stiff and painful.

Our expert veterinary nurses can spot and address any potential concerns early to ensure your pet starts the New Year healthy and happy! 🥳

Book a pet Health Check here: https://FindAHealthCheck.softr.app

*For well dog, cats and rabbits only. Please book a consultation if your pet is ill. Full T&Cs on the Offer page on the website.

⚠️ How to protect your cat from antifreeze poisoning ⚠️

Cat antifreeze exposure can happen in several ways, including spills in garages or leaks in household heating systems.

Antifreeze contains a chemical called ethylene glycol, known for its sweet taste. Although cats don’t taste ‘sweet’ flavours quite as we do, and can be choosy about what they eat and drink, they are curious creatures and may investigate any strange liquid they come across.

That's why it's so important to keep antifreeze away from cats and to act fast if you think they've ingested even the tiniest amount.

It’s so important to keep mince pies (plus grapes, raisins, Christmas pudding, chocolates) out of our pets reach.

Who’d want to share them anyway?!

If you think your pet has eaten any of the above please call us straight away on 01625 501500.

⚠️ Feline Festive Hazards ⚠️

1) Antifreeze
Ethylene Glycol found in antifreeze causes acute kidney injury, renal failure and death. It is extremely tasty so any spilt when filling the car up, or even used to keep water features from freezing over, is tempting for the cat to drink.
Signs of ingestion are ataxia (wobbliness), vomiting, anorexia (not wanting to eat), drinking lots and not urinating.

2) Cats keeping warm under car bonnets
We’re sure most of you are aware that cats do not appreciate the cold! A warm hood or wheel arch can be a cosy place for a snooze in winter.
Please tap your car bonnet before starting the engine.

3) Lillies and Poinsettias
• There are many poisonous plants around at this time of year. As well as Lillies and Poinsettias, mistletoe and holly can also be poisonous.
• Lillies and members of the Lily family have a toxin which results in renal failure. Ingestion of ANY part of the plant can result in problems. Pollen is thought to be the only poisonous part but it is just that this is most likely to drop onto the cat and the cat ingests it by grooming themselves.
• Poinsettias have an irritant sap, so just brushing against the plant can cause skin complaints. This sap will usually stop the cat eating too much of the plant however!

4) Raisins and Grapes
Usually our feline friends are more sensible than the canine so we tend to worry less about chocolate ingestion and raisin and grapes (also think Christmas cake and mince pies!).

5) Onions and Garlic (stuffing and others that contain these ingredients)
When large quantities of onions and garlic are eaten it can cause haemolytic anaemia.
Signs of this are weakness, lethargy, heavy breathing, pale gums.

6) Tree
It can be a battle of wills having the tree up with decorations on when you have a cat! Please take care with fairy lights and tinsel on trees.

Please contact us if you have any worries over the Christmas season (Vets Now will be here on the same number when we're closed - 01625 501500).
