Major announcement regarding the Canine Club.

I have taken the heart-breaking, and for me, scarcely believable decision that The Canine Club will cease trading effective from the close of business on Friday 2nd December 2022.

There have been rumours abounding and whilst it’s a decision that’s been building over the last 9 months or more, it really started back in March 2020 with the first national lockdown.

The Covid pandemic devasted our business and the reality is, it never truly recovered. The move to working from home and the collapse of all overseas travel was the perfect storm for The Canine Club. The demand for our services disappeared overnight and continued for more than 18 months. The levels of business we need to operate profitably have unfortunately not returned.

However, we are extremely proud of our 13 years of operation. We carry countless wonderful memories of all the dogs that have visited over the years, memories we will cherish forever. There has also been the odd moment that we will probably choose to forget. We have been incredibly lucky to have had so many fabulous staff working for us over the years too, many of whom are still in touch with us and each other. We have even had two members of staff build a future together and now have two lovely children!

At the very start we covered every blade of grass in the Goyt Valley walking dogs. Many of you won’t even be aware about our very humble beginnings in Kettleshulme. 18 months flying by the seat of our pants that would warrant a book in itself. Some of you will remember the old Canine Club van rattling around the lanes of Cheshire from the very early days. The turning point was the move down to Sandy Lane in December 2011. We transformed The Canine Club from a small pastime in a back garden to a major, market-leading innovator in the dog care world.

We’ve had a headcount of something in the region of 250,000 dogs through our doors!
It is impossible to summarise what I want to say in this limited space.

The current staff have been informed. Without their dedication and fortitude, we would not have survived this long. I will always be grateful for their loyalty and support. I wish them all great success in the future.

This is without doubt the toughest decision I have ever had to take in my 38 years of working life. I take no comfort in knowing that we have operated very successfully for 13 years and provided a place of great comfort and safety for almost a quarter of a million dogs in that time.

I’ve been contacting customers to inform them individually of my decision, but I am very sorry if I’ve not managed to speak to you in person prior to this post.

Monday 19th September: Bank Holiday - please be aware that our day-care service will be closed on Monday 19th September to mark the day of the Queen's state funeral. We will have staff on site to look after the boarding dogs in our care, and customers with boarding dogs staying with us will be able to pick up in the morning on Monday as planned from 9am to 12pm.

WEATHER WARNING: AGAIN..... Although the predicted temperatures over the next few days are not supposed to be quite as hot as we experienced last month, please do consider whether coming to daycare is a good option for your dog on Thursday & Friday this week. We do have lots of open space, with a fair amount of tree coverage and we're keeping our fingers crossed for a nice breeze being around but when the temperatures are at their hottest (between 2 - 6pm) please remember we don't have aircon! If you are able to, please drop off early and pick up early so your dog is only with us for the ‘cooler’ (relatively!), more comfortable part of the day. The welfare of the dogs in our care is paramount, and of course our team who look after them. And if you hear lots of splashing when you arrive to pick up - it's because we're all in the paddling pools! Thank you for your understanding. The Canine Club Team.

WEATHER WARNING: we are obviously keeping a close eye on all the different weather warnings for extreme heat on Sunday/Monday/Tuesday with temperatures possibly hitting/exceeding 30° from midday onwards on those days. PLEASE do consider whether coming to daycare is a good option for your dog on Monday/Tuesday if we get the weather that’s predicted. We do have lots of open space, with a fair amount of tree coverage but from what we have heard even the breeze is going to be HOT and we don’t have a huge amount of cool inside space. Please consider if your dog would be better off lying quietly, inside in the cool at home on those days or whether you can drop off early and pick up by midday, so your dog is only with us for the ‘cooler’ (relatively!) part of the day. The welfare of the dogs in our care, and just as importantly our staff, is paramount on unprecedented hot weather days like these. Thank you for your understanding. The Canine Club Team
