We’re Back!!! 🐾

After a long, tiring, life changing year, Henry and I are pleased to say we have made it.
The last year Henry and I have gone through a lot of changes in our life, forcing us to put a pause on Henry’s puppy school, but, we have come out the other side strong and more determined than ever!

We apologise for our disappearance due to the unfortunate events that took place in 2022, but we are trying our hardest to get back on our feet/paws.
We understand this won’t be easy after putting Henry’s puppy school on a break after being so successful in the first place.
We can’t do it without you so please, we ask you to spread the word that Henry’s puppy school is back up and running, ready to meet all the new pups and their owns.

Henry’s puppy class ready to graduated yet another successful puppy group.

Henry’s Puppy School is starting up a new group of puppy’s on Sunday the 5th of September 2021.
What will you learn?
Henry’s puppy class works on teaching the 7 basic commands. As it will be your puppy’s first step into the trained world it’s best to take it one paw at a time.
The 7 basic commands are commands all dogs will use throughout its life.
So you will learn - The 7 commands, sit, stay/wait, down, look, come, off and heel. Impulse control Focus The meet and greet technique Puppy socialising A basic routine to help you practise

Puppy classes are sold as a course of 4 session lasting one hour. All 4 session are paid in full on the first class. Classes are always held in the same place at the same time. 9am - 10am. ME1 3XY.

Classes can be moved/pushed back weather permitting. Any classes missed by choice of owner will be lost and no refundable. £60 per puppy.

I get lots of dog owners asking me...

“How do I stop people in public coming over to my dog, or allowing their dog to run over and distract my training?”

Well here are a few idea to help with that exact problem.

A Vest.
A fluorescent vest for you to wear explaining you are training your dog is a great way to catch people’s eye to let them know you wish for space and privacy.

A Bib
A dog bib in a small piece of material that lays over your dogs back, it comes in many sizes but normally in a bright fluorescent colour to catch people’s eyes. It explains your dog is in training and to give you both space. You can get similar quotes on collars and bandanas.

The Velcro Patch.
A velcro patch that attaches to the side of your harness or collar, will telling the public in one or two words, your dogs situation. It’s very eye catching as must people look at the dog before the owners.
These come in of quotes such as ‘NERVOUS’ ‘IM A RESCUE’ ‘NOT FRIENDLY’.

Colour Coded Equipment.
Colour code equipment is great if everybody knew about it. Not all dog owners know about the colour codes or what they all mean so this is a hard one to choose.
Many people get the colour lead and collar they like rather than the colour they need for their dog.
Red - Caution, I need some space.
Orange - No Dogs, I only like people.
Green - Friendly, I like to meet new friends.
White - Deaf/Blind, I can’t hear or/and see you, please move slowly.
Yellow - Nervous, please move slowly.
Blue - In Training, I’m for work not play please stay back.
Purple - Do Not Feed, please do not feed me treats.

Yesterday was our last session of the May puppy class. 🐶
We had lots going on, scent work, puppy puzzles and temptation runs. 🧩

Aster has finished his 4 weeks 1:1 training with flying colours! 🐾
We raced through the 7 basic commands with asters mum practising during the weeks in between the session 👏🏻
We moved on to recall, meeting and greets, circus trick training and distance training! So proud 😁

The Meet & Greet technique. 🐾

It is so important to teach your dog how to properly meet and greet friends and family outside and inside the house.
It is equally important to teach your friends and family how to meet and greet your dog in side and outside the house to.

Majority of the owners training gets jeopardised when people from outside the home do not listen or respect the owners wishes.
This can make a massive impact on the dogs training.

It also works the other way. Not everyone likes dogs, not everyone is confident around dogs, so they may want to pet your dog without him/her jumping up or nipping their hand.

Please reach the dogs space, and they will respect yours.

Our puppy classes were a massive hit back in 2020, but due to lockdown they had to come to a stop.
BUT NOW WE ARE BACK!! 👏🏻
Our new group puppy class is starting on Sunday the 2nd of May 2021.

My name is Elsie and I am the owner and trainer of Henry’s Puppy School.
Our puppy classes are a course of 4 week’s equalling 4 sessions, held every Sunday morning.
In the group class we work on basic beginners puppy training, focusing on the 7 basic command every dog needs. Sit, stay, come, heel, look, off and down.
Before we start the first class, we will have a brief talk about puppy treats, equipment and basic puppy health such as castration, fleeing and worming etc.
You will get a chance to order any equipment through me and try before your buy. Have a go at some puppy puzzles and toys to see if they work for you and your puppy.
The puppy’s will stay on the lead at all times during the class unless asked otherwise.
If the whole class agrees, there will be a 5 minute play time for the puppy’s at the end of each session.
Through the learning of the 7 basic commands, each puppy will learn a short routine involving ever command we have learnt throughout.
This makes it easier to know what to practise at home. The 3 minute routine once a day after classes, will be plenty to keep your training up to scratch.

How long is the class?
Classes last 1 hour starting at 9am-10am.
We ask you to arrive 5-10 minutes early to make sure everyone in the class gets to start and finish on time.
Sometimes finding us can be tricky at first, so please leave in plenty of time to begin with.

Where are the classes held?
Our classes are held outside (government guidelines) in a safe and secure field, with free parking.
ME1 3XY Old Church Road.
Parking right outside the field is not aloud so we ask puppy parents to park out side the church and take a 1-2 minute walk to the field.
You will notice some houses on your right, walk down that same road, after the houses there will be fields either side of you, horses on your right. If you carry on walking straight down that same road you will find us just beyond the horse fields.
We are clearly signed once at the field.

How many people can join?
There are 5 spaces up for grabs.
There will be no more than 6 people in the field during the class, 5 puppy parents and myself (the trainer).

How much £?
We take payment in full for the four week course on the first class.
Each session is £15 each equalling £60 for the course.
If 1:1 session are wanted or need after the course has finished, they can be booked through me (the training) after class. 1:1 session start at £25 per hour.

Who is this class for?
This class is for puppies aged 6months and under.
This is for complete beginners in training, wanting to learn the basic commands to an obedient dog.
If you know majority of the 7 basic commands already, maybe a 1:1 session will be more suited to you and your pup.
1:1 sessions are tailored to you and your pup, learning things that you wish to learn and fixing more unique problems. Group classes are great for beginners but some dogs learns differently so have a think about where your training ability is now, and where your want it to be.

Can my family join in?
Unfortunately due to Covid restrictions, we can only allow the puppy handler into the field. All other family members and friends will have to stay in their cars or at home.
The handler can change in each session if you wish to share the training out between the family, but, handlers much be over 16 to be able to be left training the puppy alone.

Over using treats! 🍬 —————————— Some people may not come across this problem when training their dog, but some will. My Henry here wouldn’t do anything I asked for free. So I had to come up with an alternative to treats. What’s the point in this? A lot of people tell me they don’t always take treats out with them when walking? Or they are worried about weight gain. Or their training their dog in something where it’s to difficult to reward with treats such as gun dog work. By slowly transitioning off of the treats to a ball or toy, will teach your dog to listen to commands for any kind of reward, not just food. How do i do this? If you decide to do this from the day you bring home your puppy, amazing! But if you have started your training with treats and decide to then change to toys it’s so important to slowly make the transition. When using toys as a reward, it doesn’t mean you can’t ever use treats, just making sure you using a mixture of the both so your dog understands the ball is just as much a reward as the treats.

Impulse control is SO IMPORTANT! 🐾 Impulse control helps teach your dog to control its self when in overwhelming and exciting situations, therefore making your training much easier and keeps you in control of the situation.

Do you want to stop your dog from running up to ever other dog they see. Do you want more control to enjoy your walk rather than worrying? Watch Henry make the correct choice but turning away from with running dog. He has two choice. Firstly, he could have ran up to this dog and potentially not come back to my first call. Or secondly, he could turn away, walk back to me and wait for the ‘go play’ command. He made the right choice without command. Get in contact if you wish to have this control over your pup.

Fetch it one of the best games you can teach your dog to play. ⚽️ Sounds silly I know. But it makes the world of difference with their training. Some dogs teach their selfs how to do it and enjoy it from a pup age. Some dogs need to be taught it. Why should I teach my dog the fetch game? The game fetch helps in many ways like focus and recall. It is a great way to stimulate your dog and release energy before a training session. This is amazing Oscar, 15 weeks old and learning how to play fetch. 👏🏻
