Lake Farm Days

Lake Farm Days Family-owned farm specialising in rare breeds, running various rural and sustainability courses. Ongoing support is given should it be needed.

This farm has been in the family for more than 100 years, but we have also farmed locally for much, much longer. We have always had livestock here, but today specialise in rare breeds including Berkshire pigs, Norfolk Horn sheep, Longhorn cattle, Suffolk Punch horses and a sprinkle of rare breed poultry like the Old English Pheasant fowl. The main aim of the courses is to give people who are think

ing of keeping livestock - wanting a bit of the "Good Life" factor - but don't know how to go about it, some information on what to do, how to start and how to keep the animals. They are also a day out with a difference for those who have an interest in the animals and purely want an excuse to spend the day interacting with them and learning about their care.

I am a little slow off the starting block with wishing everyone a Happy New Year, but I have been somewhat preoccupied with welcoming this little chap into the world. Born on the first day of 2025.
Happy New Year to all! πŸ‘πŸ˜Š

I have been lucky enough to receive a delivery of surplus apples for my pigs. I have plenty here to keep me busy with my barrow and shovel, so I just wanted to share some of the love. If anyone would like some for their animals, or even a batch of cider? while they are still in good shape, you are more than welcome to come and grab some and fill your boots! Feel free to drop me a message 🍎🍏😊

We've gone from having to keep our pets as dry as possible, to needing to provide relief from what is for some of them, insufferable heat. I just wanted to share this tip for some of our smaller ones... these little solar fans, with a frozen water bottle, in a shady spot are a great way of providing cool air circulation. With the added bonus of having the coolness of the frozen bottle to sit against if they want to.
For my Guinea pigs, I have made a mesh bottle holder, as they have a habit of chewing the bottles!

Little owls have been living in this tree here at the farm for years now. Lovely to see them. Spotted this one today on my daily walk around the fields to check on the sheep (centre of the photo). Enjoying the sunshine like the rest of us!

With spring in full tilt, anything that sits still for long enough here at the farm, seems to become an ideal spot for a nesting bird. A friend's truck was no exception. A blackbird decided that under the bonnet was a prime location to build a nest and rear her young. A big thank you to Gary for your kindness and patience, looking out for them and sitting tight with your truck, allowing them to fledge safely before moving on and well done to the blackbirds, for coping with the unexpected disturbance and doing such a fantastic job of parenting.

A yellowhammer sat still for long enough for me to take a photo. Nice to see them about, here on the farm, as they are now sadly on the conservation red list.

Our Story

This farm has been in the family for more than 100 years, but we have also farmed locally for much, much longer. We have always had livestock here, but today specialise in rare breeds including Berkshire pigs, Norfolk Horn sheep, Longhorn cattle, Suffolk Punch horses and a sprinkle of rare breed poultry like the Old English Pheasant fowl. We also have many rescue animals living out their days here at the farm, from chickens to rabbits, a goat and a mule, to name a few. The main aim of the courses held here is to give people who are thinking of keeping livestock - wanting a bit of the "Good Life" factor - but don't know how to go about it, some information on what to do, how to start and how to keep the animals. Ongoing support is given should it be needed. They are also a day out with a difference for those who have an interest in the animals and purely want an excuse to spend the day interacting with them and learning about their care.

Wildlife and the environment is an important factor here and great care is taken to support both. This is also reflected on things available to buy at the farm, from environmentally kind products in the β€˜eco shop’ along with preloved paraphernalia. Plus there will be a β€˜Freecycle and Barter Shack’ opening soon!
