Marlin came in to see our lovely vet Neil yesterday as he had a lump on his side that was ulcerating and bleeding. 🐾🐕
He had surgery to remove the lump which was successful , but we had to send the lump to the laboratory so will await histology results. 🧪🩺
We will see him back in 10 days to have hos stitches removed and we wish him a speedy recovery. 🥼
⚠️Did you know that it's a legal requirement for dogs to be microchipped, and as of June 2024, it will be a requirement for cats indoors or outdoors to also be microchipped.
What is a microchip
A microchip is a small device implanted between the shoulder blades of an animal that is used for permanent identification. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice and can be read by a microchip scanner and matched to the owner's contact details, which are kept on a national database.
The microchip implanted in your dog/cat has no battery and no internal power source; it sits inertly in the dog/cat until it is read by a microchip scanner.

Let’s talk about Lungworm 🪱
Lungworm is a parasitic worm that can travel to your dog’s heart and lungs 🫁 🫀
Dogs catch lungworm by ingesting larvae found in infected snails, slugs or frogs 🐸
Symptoms can include:
✖️Coughing
✖️Breathing problems
✖️Lethargy
✖️Inappetance
✖️Slower clotting from a wound
In mild cases an infection is not always noticeable, but in more severe cases it can cause bleeding pretty much anywhere in the body which if left untreated can be fatal🩸
Lungworm can be easily prevented with regular anti-parasitic treatment such as Advocate or Nexgard Spectra. This is particularly important in the South East where there is a high prevalence 💊

This is the adorable Moose who’s a 10 week old Rottweiler puppy who came in to us today for his 1st vaccination😍
Moose first came in to see us 10 days ago as he had a sore eye, but as you can see that has completely healed up and he has in fact put on 3.2kg in that time! We can only imagine how big he’ll be when he comes back in 2 weeks for his second injection😱

This is the gorgeous Enfield who came in today to have a dental with our lovely vet Guilia. 👩⚕️
He had a pre anaesthetic check up first to make sure he was all OK for surgery. 🩺
He needed to have 4 teeth removed and had all his teeth cleaned and polished so he has a beautiful smile now and gleaming white teeth. 🥰

Cassandra came in today to be neutered. 🐈⬛️
She is a stray and the wonderful lady who has been feeding her, worked with one of our local charities to get her neutered to stop her having anymore litters. 🩺👩⚕️
Heat cycles repeat every two weeks, so cats can have multiple litters per season if allowed.
Fertility usually decreases when a cat is around 8 years of age, but the only way to be sure a cat won't get pregnant is to have her spayed.
Cats can get pregnant straight after having a litter so please keep your cats in so this does not happen.

Gorgeous Dallas visited us today, to have some dental work done. She needed a routine scale & polish meaning that all of her teeth and gums are now clean and free from tartar build up.
She also needed 6 teeth removed. 🪥
Dental issues can start at a young age and if your pet is experiencing any signs such as excessive dribbling, reduced eating habits or pawing at the mouth then it would be beneficial to get them booked in for a check.

Just one month to go until microchipping becomes a legal requirement in cats 🐈🐈⬛
From 10th June all domestic cats in England must be microchipped by 20 weeks of age with accurate pet and keeper details. This is regardless of whether you have an indoor or outdoor cat 👀🗓️
Owners found not to have microchipped their cat wil have 21 days to have one implanted and registered, or may face a £500 fine 💷

As the weather warms up and we head towards the summer months it’s important to remember that our pets can struggle in the heat 🥵
Here are some handy tips to help our furry friends:
☀️Make sure your pet has access to shade both inside and outside
☀️Ensure they have access to fresh water at all times
☀️Walk your dog in the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler
☀️Avoid pavements. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws!
☀️Use cooling devices such as paddling pools and cool mats
☀️Pet-safe sun cream can be used on ear tips and nose
☀️Never leave you pets in vehicles, conservatories or outbuildings
Heatstroke can be fatal, so if you have any concerns about your pet please contact your veterinary practice 📞

You may notice that his right eye is two different colours 🤔
Buddy has a condition called heterochromia which is caused by a genetic mutation and cause an animal to have 2 different coloured eyes or multiple colours in the same eye. It is completely harmless and doesn’t affect his vision at all, and you may even see people with this condition 👁️

When we remove lumps and bumps we send them off to our external lab who are able to tell us exactly what they are. This means our vets Neil and Giulia can decide in a treatment plan going forward 🔬

⚠️It's grass seed season ⚠️ And this year, they are more visible as many commons around the country are being left to grow in a rewilding effort. This is why, as a dog owner, you need to be particularly careful when taking your dog for a walk! 🐶 These pointed grasses hide in long grass patches all around our parks. Their seeds are arrow-shaped and can enter a dog’s skin very easily! Once it’s in, they can travel through your pet’s tissues, causing infections and serious other health issues. Grass seeds can also enter your dog’s nose and get lodged in their throat or enter their lungs, which can prove fatal if not dealt with in time. That’s why it’s important to check for grass seeds after your dog’s daily walk and be aware of signs of discomfort such as: - Sneezing - Shaking their head a lot - Gnawing at their paw - Scratching their ear - Squinting one eye If you spot any of the signs above, don’t delay bring your pet to our surgery immediately!
