❗Did you know feather care in birds is incredibly important!❗
🌊Bathing removes debris, dust and loose feathers. It also encourages preening which keeps feathers in good condition. 🌊
🪶Dry feathers can be brittle and encourage feather destruction.🪶
🪽Bobble would like to recommend a shower, keeps the feathers shiny and you can really get your stretch on! But different birds like different ways of bathing, including showers, under the tap, getting into a bowl or tray and also different temperatures.🪽
❤️Feel free to share any tips, tricks and pictures of your birds. ❤️
Did you know only around 40% of issues can be identified during a conscious dental examination of your rabbit?
We often examine a rabbit's mouth with an otoscope to check for sharp spurs, sores or signs of discomfort but they have large tongues and lots of tissue inside the mouth reducing visibility.
To get a full picture of this we can need to give a general anaesthetic and move the tongue and buccal tissue out of the way.
As you can see in this video a spur can be very well hidden and easily missed on a conscious examination.
This rabbit seemed uncomfortable around the mouth but our vet could not visualise the teeth properly conscious. An anaesthetic was administered and the spurs discovered, there was also a painful cut on the side of the tongue (picture in comments) that the sharp points had caused. These teeth were burred back to normal angle and pain relief given for the wound on the tongue.
🐣 We'd like to wish everyone a very happy Easter weekend. 🐣
If you are tempted to add a little bunny to your family over the holiday please remember they are a 10 or more year commitment.
Rabbits are the third most popular pet in the UK and they require so much more than many people think. They need companionship, space to run and jump, yearly vaccination and can need extensive veterinary treatment.
If you are not prepared to meet these basic requirements please reconsider getting a rabbit.
If you are sure and prepared then consider a rescue! These are often already neutered, vaccinated and bonded with a partner to save you having to worry about these things. There are many rabbits waiting for homes in rescues so consider adopting.
🐰Happy Easter🐰
This lovely little bee was found exhausted and grounded by a member of the public recently and brought in to us.
We provided some honey we had waiting to help give a little sugar boost, which was thoroughly enjoyed!
After a pit stop the bee was released to find their way home.
This beardies new year's resolution is to eat more bugs.
Unfortunately, that was her 3rd bowl and she's been cut off! ❤️
Little Octavious (Gus Gus) is a wild mouse that was bought in by someone when he was caught by a cat.
Cat saliva can be incredibly dangerous to animals as it harbours lots of bacteria and causes infections which can lead to death. We would always recommend any wildlife bought in by cats receive veterinary treatment.
Gus was given pain relief and antibiotics and recovered so well that we released him nearby into the undergrowth.
Be safe Gus and avoid those cats!
Sometimes you just need a good, relaxing face massage. Luckily we're on hand for that!
Cece came in to be spayed recently and post surgery needed handfeeding and some face rubs. We were happy to oblige because, I think you'll agree, she's pretty darn cute!! 🥰
A big thank you to Folly Wildlife Rescue for taking this little baby on after it was found by a member of the public.
Vet Harriet checked over the little mouse and found no wounds so we kept him warm until a wildlife rescue could take over.
Meet Star.
This cutie is a baby sugar glider who came to see Richard for a health check with her family.
She also got some snuggles with the team because look at that face!!
Sugar gliders are marsupials and babies are raised by mum in a little pouch on her belly.
They are nocturnal so tend to make some noise at nighttime and can glide for over 150 feet with the membrane that runs from their wrist to their ankle.
They are very social and prefer to be with other sugar gliders, in the wild they can live in colonies of 20-40 individuals.
They can be messy and love sweet food, like yoghurt drop Star is enjoying. They need lots of space too and can deliver a nasty bite so handling is important to make sure they are used to it and happy to socialise.
Anastasia says she does NOT need to keep calm after her spay.
She demands attention immediately.
She was very gentle in her demands and we only got bapped in the face a few times.
Overall 12/10 attention seeking, would definitely hold paws again.
📢**Volume up**📢
Not everyone is happy to come to the vets. Hammy was letting everyone know her displeasure regarding car travel and vet trips!
Hamsters can vocalise when they are angry or frightened so Hammy was probably worried about the change in routine and not afraid to show her true feelings. Luckily it was only a quick visit and she got to return to the comfort of her home.
❓❓Did you know❓❓
🐌Snails have the most teeth of any animal🐌
Snails teeth are not like regular teeth. They are arranged in rows on its tongue. Some species can have over 20,000 teeth.
The teeth of the aquatic snail, the limpet, are the strongest known biological material on Earth, even stronger than titanium.
Here's a video of Bruce enjoying some rocket.
Ever wanted to hear a snails heartbeat?
Well here you go. This is Bruce, the giant African landsnail, belonging to our nurse Charlotte.
Landsnails are amazing creatures and they can sleep for up to 3 years. They have both male and female anatomy so they can breed with themselves and lay fertile eggs.
We'll be posting a few more things about Bruce and friends over the next couple of days. ❤️
Meet Itchy and Scratchy.
These two handsome boars were found locally in a hedge. Unfortunately, we have been unable to reunite them with their owners so we are now looking for a new home for them both.
They are both entire males but get along very well. We haven't seen any fighting between them and they can be found snuggled up under one of their hides together.
They are both in good health except for some lice, which they have received treatment for.
They love their food and Itchy (tricolour) can be
tempted out, wheeking loudly, for even the slightest rustle of a bag! Scratchy (black) can be a little more nervous but they are both easily tempted for some salad!
If you think you can offer these two the perfect home please email our head nurse at
[email protected] ❤️
Please share this post to help them find their perfect furever home.
Harley, the golden retriever, came to see us for his vaccination.
He was a very brave boy and gave a very good sit! 15/10 would definitely cuddle again.
A feel good story to start the weekend!
After being found in a garage, this sparrow hawk needed a little bit of TLC and an overnight stay before being successfully released in the nearby area 🥰
🔥🔥Signs of overheating in animals🔥🔥
🦅🐦Birds may include panting, holding wings away from the body, behaviour changes and appetite loss. Be aware panting can also be caused by respiratory disease, and not overheating. Birds that are too warm can be cooled by gentle application of cool water. Keep in shade, cool showers or misting. 🐦🦅
🐶🐩🐈Dogs and cats will show excessive panting, drooling and an increased heart rate. This can progress to pale gums, seizures, lethargy, diarrhoea and vomiting. 😺🐈🐩
🐰🐇🐀Rabbits can show red, hot ears and extremities, panting, lethargy and appearing confused leading to seizures.
Other small furries may show panting, drooling, lethargy, laying out flat, less responsive and rapid breathing.🐀🐇🐰
🦎🐍Reptiles you may see open mouth gaping, panting or an increased breathing rate, lethargy, shaking/staggering, unbalanced and a decreased appetite.🐍🦎
🌡️🌡️If your animal is overheating always cool slowly, never use ice or very cold water, use tepid water as to not drop the temperature too quickly. Get veterinary attention as soon as possible. Heatstroke can escalate quickly and lead to death.🌡️🌡️
📞📞If you are worried please call your vets for advice.📞📞
❤️We thought you might like a little awwwwww factor for your Sunday. ❤️
This little mouse was found with a head tilt and lethargy. Luckily he's loving the syringe feed and, with some medication and tlc we're hoping, will be released back to the wild.
Just a little video of Kobi and Bobbles' bonding moment. ❤️
Please note Bobble is free to fly away and Kobi is under control at all times. We would never endanger any animals which is also why we don't allow actual contact just in case.
Bobble is very good at reading other animals and tends to gravitate towards the nervous or calm dogs.
Learning to eat by himself and getting big and strong before release!
