Here are some fun facts about Collies! 🐾
🐑 Herding Champions: Originally bred for their intelligence and agility in guiding livestock.
🎦 Lassie: This iconic film star made the breed popular in U.S. culture. Collies are known for bravery and loyalty.

🏠 Excellent Family Pets: Known for their gentle and affectionate temperament.

🧥 Coat Variations: Collies come in two main coat varieties: Rough (long-haired) and Smooth (short-haired), both equally striking.

🧠 Highly Intelligent: Fast, athletic and easy to train, they excel in obedience training and dog sports like agility.

🐕 Collies and Border Collies are Two Different Breeds: Border Collies are smaller with significantly higher energy levels.

🏮The white tip on a collie’s tail has an endearing nickname: The “Shepherd’s Lantern.” This white patch of fur was thought to be easy to see at night.

YOUR DOG IS BEING A DOG

Have you ever caught yourself getting frustrated at your dog’s behaviour? 🐶😠

Well here’s the thing. There is no such thing as a ‘naughty dog.’ Your dog is simply being a dog. 🐕

Dogs don’t automatically know how to behave in a human world, or naturally understand the expectations and rules we place on them. They may not have the skills to handle the places we take them, the interactions we expect them to cope with, or the experiences we assume they will enjoy. 🌎🐾

As dog owners, it’s our responsibility to help our dogs navigate the world and teach them the skills that they need. 🐕‍🦺📚

Most behaviours can be understood if we take the time to learn the reasons behind them. 🧐

Jumping up? Your dog isn't being ‘naughty.’ They are simply seeking attention and interaction. 🐕👋

Pulling on lead? Again, your dog isn’t being ‘naughty’. They are showing you where they understand the value to be. That great sniff. That exciting point of the walk where they go off lead. Or perhaps that scary thing they really want to get away from. 🐕‍🦺🌳👃

Reactivity towards other dogs? Your dog is simply telling you, in the only way they know how, that they feel uncomfortable, worried, or scared, and that they don’t have the skills to handle the interaction more appropriately. 🐩😟

Rather than interpreting dog behaviour through a human lens, we can help our dogs adapt to the world they are part of by taking time to understand the “why” behind that behaviour, and then building their skills. 🔍🐾

And this is where concept training is so very powerful. 💪🎓
Concept training goes way beyond teaching behaviours. It allows you to teach your dog all the skills they need to fit into the world they are part of and equip them to make the very best choices, whatever situation they are faced with. 🌟🐕

Training works!... we have been working on object wrapping ("go round") for a while and she's starting to get it!!! - Why do you need this in your life? 🧐it employs the dog in something exercising body and mind 😜it is fun 🥳it gives dog a wonderful pressure release... going for a run away from you but returning to you 🤩which means the dog is practicing joyful returns to you too!! Happy dog happy owner! So - keep working on something and it comes together eventually.

Ray’s Way tips for out and about on and off lead success with your puppy getting it right from the start! … todays tip: notice and reward check in’s … and ditch the bowl - use all that food for growing what you want in your puppy!!

Rays Way tips and training for on and off lead happiness from the start!! Raw feeders here’s an extra tip for you… If you build “proximity” (the dog enjoys being close to you) then both on and off lead experiences are better… If you raw feed it can be difficult to find ways to “play” with the food… I decided to teach my puppy to eat off a spoon… this way we can play games in close proximity and learn tricks like sit, stand, twirl, paw with spoon feeding too! Solution seeking!!

Ray’s Way - just incase you didn’t get it yesterday…. Practice practice practice will pay off!!

Ray’s Way … Cake by the ocean!! Practice practice practice what you want… I want calmness in all areas at all times but especially when I want to have a coffee and cake!! So we practice calmness at home and out and about! Tips for success: Find long lasting chews your dog LOVES if it's not got their attention for a nice long time try others - I will put a list of good long lasting options in the comments later. Practice calm hanging out for short periods at first - remember a good time is better than a long time! Don’t go to the same place all the time- you want the learning to transfer to all places - so that holidays etc are nice - so visit indoor and outdoor pubs and cafes and have picnics - Practice all sorts of calm hanging out Maybe just sit on a bench and feed a piece of food at a time frequently (feed a whole meal there!!) … just chilling together- learning the rest of the world is none of our business!!

Ray’s Way puppy training tips for on and off lead success with your puppy right from the start… first time off lead…. Tips for success: 👏Make yourself valuable by playing proximity games at home - play around your legs keep it fun and rewarding 🎉Do not withhold treats - puppies need to know what’s most rewarding… chasing the geese or hanging out with you? 🚶Keep moving and giving helpful positive feedback - don’t stand looking at your phone - you do not want your puppy to make their own entertainment!!!

RAY'S WAY: Follow My Puppy tips for success out and about ON and OFF Lead... 3: Relaxing at a roadside cafe… learning that some things are none of our business… Here are some tips for success… 👋Play a lot of optimism boosting games at home so that when pup is out in the real world it is not too scary! 😌Calmly feed as people go by help pup by letting them see what’s going on but don’t give access to interact with everything. 🚛Notice when big noisy trucks or buses go by and pair these with something positive like a game or a piece of food for just remaining calm. 👍🏻Take a long lasting chew to help settle your pup whilst you enjoy your beverage. ⏱️start cafe training for only short moments. Order only Small cups of coffee to start with! … unless pup falls asleep!! 👏Aim for a short successful trip not a long stressful one!

Ray’s Way puppy training tips for starting out right with your puppy on and off lead! Part 2 of that first ever walk with my puppy… growing confidence and a healthy experience of the lead … and … it’s never too soon to start playing games on a walk!

RAY'S WAY: Follow My Puppy tips for success out and about ON and OFF Lead... 1: First time exploring out and about on lead The big wide world is full of smells and can be overwhelming for young pups - Often owners contact me because their dog seems to not want to go on walks... Let your puppy GROW CONFIDENCE outside before trying to make a "walk" happen... TIPS FOR early SUCCESS: 🦮Keep lead as loose as possible (so the pup is not practicing tugging against you) - Therefore if pup bounces towards next sniffy spot you match their speed... if they hang back you slow or stop. ✋Dont try and accomplish a "walk" 🌏Just let pup sniff and explore the big wide world 😁Try not to tug the lead unless necessary... then only for a moment to remove from something and get going again. 🙌LET PUP ENJOY being ON LEAD and OUT in the world with you.

We offer classes and one to one consultations to help owners discover solutions to their dog owning challenges.

We started out as a Cockapoo breeders - but please note: we have now retired our only breeding bitch. We are proud of how we raised our puppies with a lot of training and preparation for their new lives outside of our home.

It is exciting but can also be overwhelming to welcome a dog into your home and we want to support all dog and puppy owners as they settle in their new fur family addition.

We also know that over time struggles can unexpectedly arise and we believe that there is always a SOLUTION for every dog training struggle. So please get in contact for advice.
