RABBIT AWARENESS WEEK - HEALTHY DIET, HAPPY BUNNIES

Choosing the best rabbit food for your bunnies can seem confusing. They are complex animals that need a balanced diet with the right mix of fibre, vitamins and minerals to stay happy and healthy.

They are herbivores, this means rabbits need a plant-based diet with LOTS of fibre. Fibre is a key part of their diet and it keeps your rabbits’ digestive system healthy and moving, helping to prevent illnesses such as gut stasis. An easy way to get lots of great fibre in their diet is to make sure your rabbits have unlimited access to good quality, dust extracted feeding hay or fresh grass.

The Excel Feeding Plan
Follow the Excel Feeding Plan to help your rabbits get the correct balance of fibre, vitamins and minerals. 85-90% of your rabbits’ diet should be high quality, dust extracted feeding hay or fresh grass. This should be supplemented with a small portion of nuggets, a handful of rabbit friendly fresh greens and constant access to fresh, clean water.

Of course there are also foods that rabbits should not eat - here we feature some poisonous plants - the list is not exhaustive so do your research.

What are they trying to say? 🐇

Did you know rabbits eat their poo? And it’s really healthy for them! Rabbits need lots of fibre to stay healthy.

Rabbits can’t get all the essential nutrients they need the first time they eat their food. The first time they eat something, like tasty hay, the digestible fibre moves through their gut and is excreted as caecotrophs, which are soft, sticky droppings. Your rabbit will then eat these droppings to get the rest of the vital nutrients. The second time they’re digested they are excreted as round, hard droppings.

This is why lots of fibre, found in hay and good quality nuggets, is so important!

Laminitis risk app

There is a free app available for those of you with worrying horses and ponies. It may be of help.

Local weather conditions are monitored and are used to predict the rise and fall of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC's) in grass. When the predicted NSC's increase, this is shown as a rise in risk.

The reviews are mixed, with older posts suggesting a lack of accuracy, but more recent reviews generally find it a helpful tool, so worth considering. We would welcome any feedback. Thank you!

The app can be downloaded from the App Store.

RABBIT AWARENESS WEEK

We will be supporting this year’s Rabbit Awareness Week (RAW), which takes place from 24-28 June.

We are offering free rabbit nail clips and bunny health checks with our nurses across next week; call 01653 618303 to book in for your free nurse clinic between 24th to 28 June.

Led by Burgess Pet Care and comprising some of the UK’s largest animal welfare organisations and charities, this year’s chosen theme for RAW is ‘Healthy Diet, Happy Bunnies’. By taking part and raising awareness on rabbit welfare needs, YOUR BUSINESS hopes to reach out to more rabbit owners and ensure the needs of their pets are being met.

Lucy, Vet and Owner at Station House Vets said “We’re excited to support this year’s RAW, which focuses on raising awareness of the importance of rabbits’ diet. The latest PAW Report found that 13% of owners feed muesli mix as one of the main types of food their rabbits eat – these diets have been implicated in a variety of health problems – and only 73% of owners feed hay as one of their rabbits’ main foods; inadequate hay provision is associated with rabbit obesity.

“To encourage rabbit owners to learn more about their pets, we’ll be holding free rabbit health check clinics with our nursing team from 24-28 June."

RAW is an annual event that brings together vets, pet retailers, welfare charities, manufacturers and consumers to raise awareness about rabbit welfare issues and to encourage responsible pet ownership.

To find out more about RAW, please visit https://rabbitawarenessactiongroup.co.uk

Keep an eye out for variety of posts - and pictures of your lovely rabbits making an appearance throughout the week!

Travelling abroad this year with your pets? ☀🕶✈️🛳🏝

Lucy and Vicky are Government Official Veterinarians (OV) for Animal Health Certificates (AHC's) and are very experienced in pets and travel.

This is a service we offer to anyone (you don't have to be an ongoing client with us) as not all veterinary practices will have an OV who can offer this service.

The most important thing is the timings! So, as soon as you know when you'd like to travel with your pet, get in touch and make an initial consult appointment with either Lucy or Vicky. For this consult you will need all your microchip and vaccination history.

They will run through all the necessary paperwork and relevant dates for your journey, and will then book your Animal Health Certificate appointment for you which will be closer to your date of travel.

If you have any questions give our Client Care Team a call who can book your initial consult for you -01653 618303.

Hi it's Hilda here, 👋

Hopefully the warmer weather is just around the corner🤞

When it gets very warm and sunny mum has lots of tips and tricks to cool me down. She says its very important to keep your pets cool during the summer as heatstroke can be very dangerous. 🌞

Top tips for keeping your pets cool include:

Keep your dog hydrated. Keeping your dog hydrated is the most important step to preventing heatstroke. You should give your dog plenty of opportunities to drink cool fresh water. 💧

Walking your dog at cooler times of the day. Walking in the midday heat can be very dangerous therefore we advise that they should be walked first thing in a morning or in the evening. Walking in the heat also risks their paw pads getting burnt. 🐕‍🦺

Placing a cold wet towel over them. Wetting your dogs coat can help to lower their body temperature, leave the towel on for short periods of time and make sure you remove the towel once it has tired as it may make your dog warmer.🛁

Getting a fan. Place a fan next to your dog's usual lounging spot, make sure that your dog can avoid the cool breeze if they choose. 💨

That's all from me!

Enjoy the sun .... when it finally appears! ☀️

Diabetic Awareness Week

Diabetes Week is a week to make some noise, raise awareness and shout about the things that matter to people with diabetes, shining a light on what it’s like to live with day in, day out.

So we thought this was an opportune time to also raise awareness of diabetes in our pets.

What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition that causes a person's blood sugar level to become too high.

There are 2 main types of diabetes:
Type 1 diabetes – a lifelong condition where the body's immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin
Type 2 diabetes – where the body does not produce enough insulin, or the body's cells do not react to insulin properly

So what about dogs and cats?
In our pets - cats are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes and dogs are more likely to develop type 1

Both dogs and cats with diabetes can be treated; watch out for more information later in the week.

Meet Magpie the lovely lurcher.

Poor Magpie was brought into the clinic out of hours after she had two nasty wound to her front leg. She was brought into the practice at 10pm on Friday night where she was met by familiar faces; vet Vicky and nurse Nicole.

Vicky assessed the wounds and gave Magpie pain relief and antibiotics. Once stable Magpie underwent a general anaesthetic to have her leg x-rayed, wounds flushed and debrief and then closed with stitches. She then had an immobilising bandage placed called a Robert Jones to support her limb and help the wound heal.

She then spent 24 hours recovering at the practice and was discharged home on Sunday morning, prescribed with strict cage rest, antibiotics and pain relief.
We saw Magpie for her 1st bandage change, where she seemed much less painful and the wounds were healing very well. Vicky was very pleased with her progress so far.

We are sure that Magpie will keep improving and be running around in no time at all! Look out for more Magpie updates!

Lucky Magpie saw her usual vet and nurse at the practice even though it was night time and was very happy not to have to go to a different site. Don’t forget we are here for your pets 24hours a day 365 days a year.

World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated annually on 5 June and encourages awareness and action for the protection of the environment. It is supported by many non-governmental organizations, businesses, government entities, and represents the primary United Nations outreach day supporting the environment.

As we are Investors in the Environment Bronze accredited we are focusing today on ensuring we are maximising (or minimising) our impact on the environment in everything we do. Our team have been asked to take extra consideration around the practice to see if there is anything more we can do and share it with our team.

We encourage our clients, partners and peers to do the same.

29/05/2024

After 23 years with Station House Vets, Lynn, our Equine and Insurance Manager has decided to hang up her headset and sadly will be leaving Station House Vets in June.

Lynn is looking forward to enjoying a (hopefully) sunny summer off and then looking for something part time while enabling her to enjoy current hobbies and start with new ones.

Lynn joined Edmund and Clare in the practice back in the days when we were based at Station House, just the other side of the A64.

Lynn started as a nurse and receptionist and since then has worn many hats ending her career with us managing the insurance for all our clients and their pets, as well as managing all of our equine clients, and all our equine vets!

Lynn has become the go to person for many of our clients because of the relationships she has built up, and we know you will all miss her, as we will.

Lynn’s last day with us is here in the practice is 7th June and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Lynn for her hard work, dedication and commitment to Station House Vets from back in the day through to now.

We would like to wish Lynn all the best for the future.

EQUINE ACUPUNCTURE

We offer your horses acupuncture and electroacupuncture here at the practice or at your yard.

Vinny came for his first acupuncture session last week and he was such a good boy. Kayleigh did a full assessment by palpation and then used specific acupoints to maximise the positive effects of his session.

As you can see Vinny had needles in his sacral region, his thoracic musculature, his chest and even on the side of his face.

As this was his first session Kayleigh wanted to make it as calm and relaxing for him as possible, so the needs in the chest (Lung 2 and Kidney 27) were placed to help him be calm. Acupuncture has been proven to have an effect on areas of the brain, most notably the limbic system which is involved with emotional regulation and is responsible for the 'sedative' effect acupuncture has on the majority of horses.
