Catching issues early; means improving your pet’s quality of life quicker and potentially saving you money.
We always say that preventative care is better than a cure. So, for World Cancer Day we want to raise awareness of regular vet checks.

Four handy tips to keeping your cat happy and warm
😻 Provide a litter tray for them – even if they usually don’t use one.
😻 Have multiple beds or blankets
😻Lots of toys and indoor activities to keep them busy. They’ll be spending more time indoors and you want to keep them enriched.
😻 Provide places outside that your cat can shelter from the classic British wind and rain.
Have you got any top tips? We’d love to hear them below ⏬

Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.
This we want to give thanks to how much our besties give to us each day.

Who has welcomed a new feline to the family recently?
Peace of mind and regular vet visits are two great things – especially for your pet.
That’s why we have our pet health plan here at Jackson & Nuttall Vets to achieve the above two points.
1) A way for your cat to mark you with their pheromones creating a stronger bond.
2) A way for your cat to seek attention from you.
Clearly it is always going to be the first one…

Human chocolate for humans. Dog treats for dogs.
We always get asked is of chocolate okay for our dog? The answer? Zero chocolate is the right amount for a dog.
Chocolate contains theobromine (a compound poisonous to dogs). How dangerous chocolate is depends on the type and amount eaten and the size and health of your dog.
Chocolate coins, chocolate tree decorations, your favourite festive tin are all bad for your dog.
If your dog has eaten chocolate, the best course of action is to contact us as soon as possible for advice.

Supervise pets around Christmas decorations
Although Christmas decorations help to set the scene, certain decorations may pose a risk to our pets. For example, stringy decorations such as tinsel and decorative string can cause digestive blockages if eaten and glass baubles may cut paws if smashed. Christmas trees may resemble an exciting climbing frame to adventurous cats, so consider tethering them!
Keep inquisitive pets safe by supervising them and keeping them away from potential dangers.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that dogs can catch from infected dogs and standing water contaminated by the urine of infected farm animals or wildlife. Leptospirosis can cause serious illness and damage to internal organs such as the liver and kidneys.
Regular vaccinations are vital in protecting your pet from key infectious diseases, and annual preventative healthcare and vaccination appointments provide an opportunity for regular health checks for your pet.
Core vaccinations for dogs will include the leptospirosis vaccine, and you can speak to one of our team to learn more or book a vaccination appointment.

Cats enrich our lives every single day, let’s make sure we repay the favour 🐱
✔️ Cats need their own territories and kit food, snacks, bed, they are not wired up to share they find this stressful (odd exception where they buddy up)
✔️ Food puzzles are great way to enrich their feeding time
✔️ Cats love hiding places such as cardboard boxes, bags (not plastic), high spots on shelves and cupboards
✔️ Cats enjoy playing with small simple toys, the best toys are ones they can play for a short time then put away, so they remain fun for them
❌ Avoid laser toys as these can cause frustration and lead to behaviour changes due to the frustration they create.

We’ve got an important question, that needs answering below!
Older Pet Tips
As a caring owner you’ll know that healthy food, enough exercise, loving attention, sleep, access to veterinary care and the occasional treat are all key to ensuring your pet lives a happy life.
But when they reach an older age, there’s ways to make them as comfy and happy as possible.
Day 11
Day #11 | 12 days of Christmas pet tips
Fireworks can be very scary for our pets. It’s sensible to keep cats and dogs inside after dark and close windows and curtains. Where possible keep the lights on and create some background noise by playing music or having the television on. Pets will often benefit from having a safe place to hide and stressed pets should not be left home alone. Speak to your veterinary team if you are worried about managing your pet’s firework stress.
Day 10
Day #10 | 12 days of Christmas pet tips
If you are entertaining guests this Christmas, there are likely to be more people going in and out of your home. Take care to ensure your guests know how to interact with your pets and that pets have somewhere quiet to go if they need time alone. Having pets microchipped brings peace of mind that they can be traced back to you if they are accidentally let out or escape.
Day 9
Day #9 | 12 days of Christmas pet tips
As the weather gets colder paths and roads are commonly gritted to melt the ice. However, this grit can sometimes irritate dogs’ paws causing mild to, in some cases, more severe discomfort. It’s sensible to avoid heavily gritted areas where possible and thoroughly wipe your dog’s paws after walks or give their feet a quick rinse if needed. If your dog is distressed after a walk or seems to be in pain, contact your veterinary practice for further advice.
Jackson and Nuttall veterinary practice was founded by Alec Jackson and Kathryn Nuttall in 1983, so we have many years’ experience and are well established in the Middleton area of Manchester.
Over the years, we have seen many changes, including at our own practice, as originally, we were a mixed practice looking after a much broader range of animals, whereas now we focus completely on small animals, such as cats and dogs.
Alec sadly left the practice in May 2019 to take much-deserved retirement, however Kathryn is still here providing over 30 years’ experience in outstanding veterinary care. Kathryn is joined by other long-standing team members at Jackson and Nuttall, consisting of another three veterinary surgeons (with combined experience of over 30 years), and four qualified veterinary nurses, some of whom have been with the practice over 15 years.
The Jackson and Nuttall team is completed with a further seven team members to support all our clients and their pets.
Find out more about our fantastic Jackson and Nuttall team now.
We have been based at 171 Manchester New Road for almost 40 years and are proud to have built an outstanding reputation in that time with the pet owners of Middleton. We pride ourselves on delivering a high standard of service for every pet we treat, and our clients regularly give us positive feedback as they are so pleased with the way we care for their pets. At Jackson and Nuttall, we understand that pets are a member of the family, and we treat them with the same level of care and attention we would our own animals.
More recently, we have become part of the VetPartners family of practices and are pleased to be part of such a trusted group that focuses on supporting and developing veterinary practices like ours. Our team has benefited from additional professional development since we joined VetPartners, which means we can only further improve the excellent level of service we already provide to our clients.
We believe in having a personal connection with our clients and are committed to continue this approach.
