Dear All ,If you have wondered why l haven’t posted ,I’m afraid I’m ill .I have a very bad infection in my leg and my Port -a-cath yet again is blocked.This doesn’t surprise me as they didn’t want to put it back ,instead gave me two pick lines that one causes 2 blood clots and the other haemorrhage so I’m not a happy bunny .The best thing I ever did was to stay at home away from the toxicity of the hospital and where elder abuse exists.Barbara

Please becareful with the group in the picture below. The admin lives in Alaska not even in the UK she’s up the Vales backside and when I comment on information that is wrong or requested I get threatened with being banned from a group which she invited me to join. I am now censored on answering how big brother is this, incorrect information is very very dangerous. All I’m saying is becareful not all info on here is correct. After this post I probably will be banned I’m not the only person to say about her being in Alaska and how would she know about British wild hedgehogs? She’s read and copied a lot of information from other rescues and put it as hers and doesn’t like being challenged she is the ONLY admin her name is Susan Sene just so you know who I’m talking about. Because we’re getting phone calls from all over the country we are wondering if the BHPS are actually answering their phones we are getting phone calls literally from Scotland all the way down to Cornwall, and east to west 24/7 yes even during the night, it’s getting crazy this is also on top of our own phone calls locally. People who are local cannot get hold of us because of answering the countrywide calls. I’m also sick of the abuse that we’re getting because I didn’t answer a phone call at 4:15 this morning, the reply was that we’re open 24/7 when I told him I’m human and need sleep he got abusive.

Dear All,Our premature babies are all doing very well ,they are gaining weight and have all past the 17 grams now .It’s very early days for these babies ,so every day is precious and with only a 5% chance of survival they are little fighters .Iam feeding throughout the night and their formula is given on the 2 hrly ,this seems to be how they like it and as they are gaining weight I will continue on this regime.Barbara

Dear all, can we all pray and think of Val Williams today. She had a fall and had a hip fracture. She was recovering when she fell again and undid all the good work the surgeon did, she is awaiting another more complicated procedure, which will be in about a week. Before her second op the hospital are waiting for some ordered equipment as the second fall did extensive damage. She also broke her right wrist. Val has been a valued supporter for our hedgehogs for years. We wish you a speedy recovery Barbara Wendy and especially the hedgehogs X

Dear All ,our prem babies are now approximately 36 hrs old ,all doing very well .fed throughout the night at 2 hrly intervals .All other babies growing very well and some require 3/4 hrly feeds . some going free this next week .We have managed to release 21 hedgehogs this week ,it’s such a good feeling ,when they come in so poorly,to get them back where they belong .and very sad the ones you loose ,who from the time you hold them you immediately want to help get better .Barbara

Dear all, premature babies 12 gms-14.07. Mum has had a small haemorrhage. Babies were not fed by mum, who looks a very small young mum so the babies haven’t received any of her colostrum. Babies are approximately 3hrs old. The picture today is to let you see just how small they are in the video they look bigger. Barbara

Dear All GRAPHIC and distressing video.This little hoglet arrived 2 hrs ago ,I have been working on him since he came ,he was being eaten alive by maggots.He is very sick and I’m surprised he is still with us ,I can only love him now and keep removing the remaining maggots as I must not leave one .I know his chances are very slim ,but he has been given strong pain relief and fluids ,and made as confortable as I can,I think a garden spade had been the original cause of his injury .I had to cut the spines off as there were hundreds of maggots and I need to find the sorce,he also had multiple holes filled with maggots .As he is very frail ,it’s such a shame he wasn’t found sooner his chances would have been better .Hes in gods hands now .Barbara

We need newspapers minus the staples. Please don’t remove them by chopping the papers in half this means that we cannot use them as we need whole ones so please leave papers whole and no staples that would be fab. Thanks Wendy

Dear All ,This little girl has just arrived ,she is a strimmer hoglet ,very similar to the one we lost earlier in the week .I have given her pain relief and cut back on the spines to be able to clean her wound this will be checked every 15 minutes for the next 24 hrs .Manuka honey will be used for it antibacterial properties and excellent healing .She also has an injured toe .Thank goodness the gentleman got her to us before she succumbed to other serious complications and possibly death .Barbara.

Right this is a once and for all status. This isn’t to all of you, most are lovely to me. I am sick of being abused on my phone because I’m not updating people about “their” hedgehogs and then having to suffer the wrath of some finders and being told that I have no decency because I won’t update them on “their” hedgehog. Being told that because they’ve read on the internet that they should go back to where they came from, this isn’t true this is what someone’s opinion is if a hedgehog comes in sick or injured why would it go back to be injured again, the amount of dog bite injuries we get in are horrendous, next time it may be killed. I have today been emotionally blackmailed because a lady who brought a very sick hedgehog in asked for updates to which I replied that we have so many in atm that it’s impossible to update every single one of them. We are getting so many in that aren’t making it and don’t need anymore threats we are having an emotional enough time as it is. I was in meetings today from 11am until 4 then had to travel back from Liverpool to Woodford for some day old babies, this is all at my own expense financially and time. I didn’t answer her text because I was driving next minute I get a text saying you still haven’t told me how it’s doing? Then 5mins later another message asking for an update. Then another saying that she’s upset that I haven’t got the decency to reply, I was driving for goodness sake. I then get told that I have made it VERY clear that she’s not getting the hedgehog back and said for gods sake have some compassion that they went out of their way to bring it to Barbara’s and that I cannot even update her and throws fb into the mix saying that she can see why people on fb are angry and upset the way they are treated and said it’s common decency to update people. I was then told to look at myself and that my reputation says it all, then she decided that she’d brought the hedgehog to the wrong place.

Barbara and myself are cleaning, feeding medicating, burying the poor ones that have passed away, the feeling of being helpless and responsible even though it’s nothing to do with what we have or haven’t done. We get to bed at around 2am and I’m then back up at 5am. The amount of phone calls that I get on my own personal phone is astronomical constant one after the other all day and often during the night too. I have someone who phones on a no number ID who plays stupid music, laughs and then hangs up anytime of the day or night, he now has two girls phoning me saying that they’re going to kill me. People get very rude and offensive when I don’t answer their phone call because I’m asleep, it says you’re open 24/7 we are only human and at least need some sleep. I’m still getting phone calls well into the night. My daughters can’t even speak to me because my phones always going about a hedgehog and I wouldn’t have it any other way tbh, I field all the calls so that Barbara can get the work done. If anymore of this abuse continues Barbara and I have discussed that we will be deleting our page it’s more trouble than it’s worth. NOBODY knows Barbara and myself but feel that they have a right to abuse us. We put all our heart and soul into the hedgehogs and love what we do just not all the hassle and abuse. Be kind and if you cannot say anything nice then don’t say anything at all. Once words are out they cannot be taken back and can have a detrimental effect. Please don’t say anything nasty if you don’t like our status then as we have said scroll on or unlike our page. The written word doesn’t have feeling nor emotion and can be taken the wrong way. Having Autism doesn’t help because sometimes I can be a bit abrupt this is part of me and my makeup that I cannot change I wouldn’t want to change because then I won’t be me, a kind and gentle person just like Barbara who wears our heart on our sleeve. Dear All ,Today I acquired two South African Pygmy hedgehogs .The two young men who brought them wanted them to have the best of care and a good life .Very sadly when these young men acquired a tenancy ,where they had been abandoned .The called the RSPCA but to no avail .On arrivel I had along chat and they told me they were both girls ,as I examined them I informed them that no one boy .They were surprised,but hedgehogs breed and now I could have babies any time .Also they are solitary nocturnal animals who have a special diet but require much room to forage.Luckily for me I had another very large cage so I was able to separate them ,otherwise they would just continue to breed.In their native country they would forage 8 miles per night .They are totally different to our British hedgehogs erinaceus europaeus ,and they have much thinner legs .I feel it’s a shame they are used as pets ,because they need room to roam as they would in wild and need treating with respect ,they should be aloud to sleep during the day and be active at night ,a good diet and not be allowed to become overweight as the strain on their heart and legs ,They also need heat as they don’t regulate their temperature especially during the winter months .Barbara.

Dear All ,Please can I remind all people who put loose bin bags on the ground .Hedgehog mums give birth in plastic bags ,and today we have received a hoglet that was found in the bin .Please try to leave the bin bag above ground level to avoid this happening.Luckily the hoglet is ok and we have asked the finder to thoroughly search the bin for others .This is not the first time this has happened .All bin bags ,rubble bags left out for a period of time need searching thoroughly before disposal .Thank you .

Would finders of hedgehogs out during the day please realise that we have to ask all sorts of questions. It’s breeding season and not all hedgehogs out during the day are sick, people google it and that is what the internet says. We have to ask questions if you take a perfectly healthy hedgehog away it may have babies and just having a rest from them or a pregnant female collecting materials for a nest to have her babies in. PLEASE PLEASE don’t be so rude with me because I’m trying to establish what’s wrong and whether it needs to come in or not.. REMEMBER THAT YOU PHONED THE RESCUE THEY DIDN’T PHONE YOU. This is MY private number it was loaned to the hedgehog trust a looooooooooooong time ago. Please have some manners and don’t be so rude we are only trying to help. DON’T tell me that you’ll phone another hedgehog rehabilitator, just because you don’t like what I’ve said tbh I’m sick of the abuse that we get and yet don’t deserve. We are volunteers even Barbara without pay so don’t expect for a male to be so rude and then harrass me after the phone has been put down. He’s said that I need change my attitude towards people that are phoning for a sick animals, my name isn’t Dr Dolittle, the questions I ask are ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY for the sake of a sick animal. And that my attitude towards people is disgusting and that I’m supposed to be here to help, which is EXACTLY what I was doing. Would you like to take phone calls at ALL hours of the day and night, I think not I even have someone threatening to kill me. So remember to be kind and accept the questions that we ask and remember we HAVE to ask questions we are not doing it for the good of it but for the good of the hedgehog. The latest is that I’m going to be reported to someone I don’t have a clue who to. Wendy

Dear All ,A very difficult and distressing video to make .Barbara .

Dear All ,Made this video while I get a drink ,there are some blank parts as I had to put my iPad down to change position of the hoglet .He has quite nasty injuries for a small hoglet ,but as he is doing so well ,I’m going to try to save all three injured legs .Just this past 24 hrs he has greatly improved and the very swollen necrotic front leg is now clean and he can both stand and walk ,even though he has lost 3 toes .His back foot is necrotic on the top ,but that also is now looking much better ,the other feet has slight injuries ,and across his rear end the infected necrotic area is very clean ,I’ve cut back on th spines so they don’t obstruct in the healing .He receives a warm salt bath each day and we are not dressing the wound ,but letting air get to it .We need to keep it as dry as possible so he has dry food ,food in gravy or jelly is likely to infect the wounds .He can weight bare and walk even though his foot is very swollen ,it almost looks like trench foot.He will remain on antibiotics ,anti inflammatory s and strong pain relief .He is adorable and loved his baby cat biscuits .Im hoping he will get through this even though it’s early days .He will require a 200 ft Walled garden should all come to fruition,im hopeful.Barbara

Dear All ,Stevies run for freedom,he is doing so well ,but still has a long way to go .His lower jaw has now come together and a small scar remains,his roof of his mouth is also taking shape and what was once a mess is now looking less battered and bruised.,The fracture is on the mend ,but he still requires hand feeds.The abscess on this head does require some treatment but it is much smaller ,and the Imaverol baths for his ringworm has worked very well ,his skin is so much better .Hope you enjoy the video .Barbara

Dear All ,This little hoglet came from the golf course in Cheadle Holme this morning .Both myself and Wendy thought he was on his last breath ,extremely cold and very emaciated,very wet do to the rain fall .But we decided to give him a chance though it’s very small .It’s very upsetting when you see hoglets dying in front of your eyes and it never gets easy.I don’t know the outcome yet as it’s to early to say .Barbara.
