Lola
This is Lola ❤️
Lola was really struggling to breathe, and her owners brought her in for examination. An appointment was quickly arranged with our in-house Referral clinician, Emma, who confirmed that Lola was suffering from BOAS.
Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome is a common condition of short nosed breeds such as Pugs, French Bulldogs and Shih Tzus. The condition is really complex but involves multiple abnormalities of the breathing system including stenotic (narrow) nostrils, an overlong soft palate (tissue at the back of the throat) and narrow breathing tube (trachea). It can also cause vomiting or regurgitation which can lead to aspiration pneumonia if food matter is inhaled.
Lola was really struggling with her breathing when she came to Beech House and was also unable to exercise properly or enjoy her walks in the park. Surgery was arranged and Lola returned after completing a short course of pre-operative medication, for surgery of her airway.
Vet Emma, who is recognised by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as an Advanced Practitioner in Soft tissue surgery, along with the nursing and support staff team operated on Lola to shorten her soft palate and open up her nostrils to allow more airflow. This type of surgery is extremely complex because airway responses are very challenging to predict during operations.
Thankfully Lola’s surgery went well, and she recovered perfectly. She was discharged home the same day and as you can see from her “before and after” videos, it is so much easier for her to breathe now, and she can finally enjoy her walks without struggling to breathe.
If your dog is experiencing similar signs, please don’t wait too long to get them checked. BOAS symptoms can get worse with age, so the earlier a diagnosis is made the more options there are to manage this, to improve your pet’s quality of life. If you dog snores, gets out of breath easily, coughs, vomits, regurgitates food, has changed their exercise
Thank you to our lovely clients for taking the time to share such lovely feedback following their recent visits.
