Back in October 2017 I was sat in the middle of 5 puppies. 2 female and 1 male black dogs, typical Caucasian Shepherd puppy colour and 1 female and 1 male brown dogs, a rather unusual CO colour. I knew I wanted a male dog to come and live with us and I originally went to view the little black male but I soon as I saw (Cara)Mac (his puppy name, they were all named after chocolate bars) I absolutely fell in love. He was around 5Kg and hopped around rather than ran and when he sat down he sat flat on his bum with his back legs outstretched in front of him. Not a care in the world. I paid for him there and then and named him Cooper.
Before Cooper came to us, his breeder made sure he tried a wide variety of food, dry, wet and raw. She said his preference was raw but we had never fed that to any of our dogs and it looked difficult and messy. We started him on a large breed puppy kibble which he would pick at but never really finish a full meal. That’s when I started to research raw feeding properly. I quickly discovered it wasn’t all chicken carcass and mess like I originally thought and that the meat came packed in neat little tubes. We had tried a few local shops and then some further afield. We found some of the specialist shops to be quite expensive especially as we knew we would be feeding Cooper in excess of 2Kg of meat a day when fully grown. The idea of having ‘complete meals’ where the fruit and veg were already added appeared convenient but came at a high price. A few brands also stood out and not for the right reasons! Some of the cheaper meats was mushy and generally had a bad texture compared to the Bulmer or Yorkshire Raw meats that we tried. We found Cooper had a preference to those two brands and it was super easy to add our own fruit and veg to bulk out the meals.
The daily question off friends, family and passers-by was ‘What do you feed such a big dog on? I bet he costs a fortune to feed!’ Most people were surprised and some even shocked on how little it cost and how great he looked. Cooper goes out with the guys from Mountain Miles most days whilst we’re at work and the first question I was asked was ‘What do you feed him?’ The look of relief on Scott’s face when I said he’s on raw because not only does help with his temperament it also meant that Scott and his team didn’t have to pick up huge cow patts when walking Cooper!
We were getting asked more and more to ‘get us some dog food’ and that’s where we started Cooper’s Corner. No, we are not a shop. No, you can’t walk round and browse any shelves. But we see this as a plus. Because we operate from home means our overheads are low keeping the price of the meats as low as possible. This isn’t our job or livelihood so we do it purely for the love of our dogs and yours. I’m not a canine nutritionist so you are not paying for my ‘knowledge’ but I love my dog as much as you love yours and that’s a lot!
