Unfortunately due to my health and personal circumstances I have decided to stop breeding for now.
Michelle at Mesozoic Rattery has kindly taken on all of my rats, some of which she will rehome and others that she may breed to continue the line.
I will still be here to answer any questions etc from owners of my babies. I miss all of my rats already, but this was the best decision for me and for them 🐀💕

Apparently one lovely person is spreading around how horrible I am and that I don’t take rats back 🙄
This is categorically untrue, all my pet homes should be aware that if for whatever reason they can no longer keep their rats, they are welcome back here.
However, the rats have been living as spoiled pets, if they come directly back to me they simply will not be getting the one to one attention that they are used to. Like many other breeders, I have too many rats to be able to give them personal attention in comparison to what they could get as somebody’s pet.
Therefore, for the rats benefit I aim to find them a pet home that they can move to directly. This is a lot kinder and smoother for the rats, rather than going from home to home and cage to cage.
The majority of people on my waiting list are looking for babies, so sometimes the owner of the rats will want to advertise them elsewhere to have a higher chance to find a suitable home quickly. If that isn’t possible, then the rats are welcome to come back to me until a home is found.
I have NEVER refused to take rats back! Had this person spoken to me about it instead of making assumptions and causing drama then maybe they would be aware of that 🙃
I am slow to read/reply to messages sometimes as I have my own life, other pets and commitments and I am also disabled which affects my daily living. I don’t have the time or energy to instantly reply to all messages, but I do get around to them eventually and am consistently giving people rat advice or help when needed, whether or not they own Hyjal rats. If it is an rat emergency that you need to contact me about then feel free to message my personal page and I will be notified and able to reply much faster.

I have these 3 bucks looking for a home together. They have been struggling in intros to other rats so would need to stay in their trio. They’re confident and friendly to people, they are just over a year old - a standard, a Rex and a dumbo 🐀

3 x 10 week old girls looking for a home in their trio. From a rescue litter, a bit hard to catch but fine to handle when you’ve got them, they don’t bite they’re just a little shy 🐀

At 2 years and 7 months old we had to say goodbye to Cece today 💔
She was losing weight, showing signs of her age, and had some lumps appear which were causing discomfort, so we made the decision to put her to sleep (after giving her some treats and a lump of cheese which she gobbled up!)
Although I’m sad over her passing, I know that she had a good and long life. I’m very happy that she reached such a great age, free from any health issues until her last month. She lives on in all her relatives who are with us now. Pictured is her with her brother Rice as babies, with Cece on the left. And one of my favourite rat photos ever, which is of her as a young adult 💕
Sweet dreams Cece🤎

I’m very overdue in updating this album! 🙈
Here are some of the ratties loving life in their homes 🥰

I have 3 sweet adult marten boys looking for a new home. 🏡 1 dumbo, 1 rex, and 1 standard - Bones, Foggy and Cagney 🐀
They’re brothers, just a year old and sadly their owner can’t keep them anymore due to personal circumstances. All the boys are happy to come out of the cage and be handled, and they’re all healthy.
Please message me if you’re interested in offering them a home! I’ll need a completed application and proof of setup.

It took me a thousand years to narrow down my keepers, so I still have a couple of babies who are looking for new homes and are ready to go 🏡
I have a few girls who can either leave in pairs or trios, and 1 trio of boys 🐀
Message me if you’re interested ☺️ I’ll need a completed application form and proof of suitable setup
24/07/2022
🐀 I will be sorting through my messages tomorrow.
I still have a couple of babies left who are ready to go, but I just need to narrow down my keepers and then finally organise the remaining rats before doing allocations ☺️
11/07/2022
We still have some baby girls looking for homes 🏡 - more than the girls pictured, including some double rex. Almost all my waiting list was for males 🙈
If you’re interested, or if you’ve applied for girls and I’ve missed you then send me a message ☺️
29/06/2022
A litter of just 2, and they’re twins 🥺
well one is actually dumbo but shhh 🤫 - this is actually a good picture to compare the different ear types on kittens ☺️ 👂
27/06/2022
The absolute cutest little 3 week old silver agouti dumbo rex girl 🥺🥺🥺
Obviously I have to keep her… 🫢 but what to name her?
27/06/2022
A few of the baby girls this morning, we’re reorganising cages and moving them into one of the LZV tiers 🥰
Some girls are still looking for homes, please message me if you’ve applied and are ready for some babies. My brain is melting trying to check all my message history so a quick reminder is much appreciated!
24/06/2022
Apologies to anyone who’s messaged me, I’ve been poorly the last 2 weeks. I’ll be checking all messages this weekend. Most babies are ready to leave from next weekend so I will also be arranging collections.
Feel free to PM me if you’re expecting babies from me just so it makes it easier for me to sort and know that you’re still interested 🐀

(Mainly posting this so I can finally organise some vague allocations 😆)
Some quick individual photos of all the babies from my recent litters. These are from 6 litters, 2 from each line (dove/pearl(which the blacks and minks are from), marten/SA, ivory/PEW). Ranging in age from 3 weeks to 9 weeks old.
The dove line is throwing too many recessives and whacky markings recently so I’m not going to breed from that anymore since I’m not getting what I want out of the litters 😣
There’s a mix of standard, rex and a few double rex. Some of the rexing looks very promising on the marten line but it’s still early days. In the photos the pink ring is for girls and blue ring is for boys 💖💙
14/06/2022
This boy was found outside, he was caught by somebody who didn’t have the means to care for him, so now he’s here 🙈
He will be going to the vet for treatment to ensure he isn’t carrying anything nasty from his time outside. In a few weeks if he gets the all-clear, then he will be looking for a pet home where he can live with some other rats.
Unsure of his actual variety but he’s a dumbo, he seems calm and friendly in the cage, and he tolerates being handled but is a bit wriggly.

*adult rats wanting homes*
We’re going to be breeding rats far less often from now on. We will still continue our ivory/PEW and marten/silver agouti line, but rather than breeding groups of females all at once, we will just breed pairs twice a year to keep the lines going. I will still have kittens available for pet homes, just less often.
We own a lot of dogs and are very involved in the dog world, mainly dog showing. Due to how busy we are with the dogs, we feel that it’s not fair to keep so many rats as we struggle to have enough time for them all. So we would like to reduce our rat numbers to just the bare minimum that we need for our future breeding.
This means that I have lots of adult rats who are looking for pet homes, they generally range from 12-18 months old (I will keep all my oldies here with me until they pass). If anybody wants to offer a nice pet home to some adults then please get in touch. I have males and females available.
- (My current litters still haven’t been fully allocated yet as I’m still working my way through my rat admin, so apologies if you’re still waiting to hear from me)

We had these interesting babies pop up from Lily & Cola’s litter. They seem to have 2 different colours on them, I’ve been told it could be a type of merle so am excited for them to grow more and find out how the markings develop 🤔
09/06/2022
We sadly had to say goodbye to Rivendell Deku a few days ago. We found him very poorly and weak at the bottom of the cage, I suspect due to his age, so we helped him to pass peacefully. He was a super calm and gentle boy, rest in peace Deku 😞💚
30/05/2022
7 week old males. 5 ivory and 2 PEW 🤍
I’ll be keeping one for myself but the rest will be ready to leave soon 🏡
30/05/2022
We have 3 little kangaroos in Clouds’ litter 🦘
3 of the girls are double rex, as adults they will be mostly naked with thin patchy hair. They’re still as healthy as a normal rat but they can get scratched easier by their friends due to lack of fur to protect them. It’s been a while since I’ve bred for double rex here!
I’ll be replying to messages tomorrow morning so sorry if I’ve been ignoring you 🙈 we’re just very busy here with all the new litters

I rather like this chap, but I keep telling myself that I don’t need to keep more bucks… 🤥

*home found, thank you*
This is Tinsel, a 19 month old Hyjal girl who is looking for a new home.
She came back to me after her friends passed away as she was alone. She’s currently living with some of my girls but would love a pet home where she can get more attention. She’s very confident and friendly to rats and to people and would easily fit into a new group 🐀
16/05/2022
Truffle had 7 babies. 5 females and 2 males, in mink and mink variegated, some rex and some standard 🤎
16/05/2022
I’m crying from the cuteness 🥺🥺🥺
We have 2 mink girls, 2 dove girls, and a mink capped boy. All in curly wurly rex 🥰
14/05/2022
I have a pair of Hyjal females looking for a new home as sadly their owner can’t keep them anymore. They’re 16 months old, confident and friendly and are used to getting lots of love and attention 🐀
Message me for more info if you’d like to offer them a home 🏡
13/05/2022
I don’t think this baby is much of a poser… 😝
All recent applications will be checked as babies get a bit older, then I will contact applicants and people from my waiting list so I can begin to allocate; if I haven’t replied to your message yet then this is why 😁
09/05/2022
5 beans born to Clouds at the weekend ☺️ these should be dove/mink/pearl with some rex

I have to share this video that Georgia sent me, she has some boys from my last litters. Such a cool setup and they’re having the time of their lives! 🥰
Love my girls 🥰 just popped them into intros. They’re all so friendly and soft to new rats and to people
2 of the 6 day old babies from Theo are very weak and small. They are nursing from her but they’re always at the bottom of the pile and don’t seem to be getting much milk - they don’t really have a visible milk band and they are dehydrated.
I’m a worrier and want to give them the best chance. So today we tried hand feeding them to ensure that they are being fed, we left them in the nest with the rest of the litter but took them out a few times to be fed and prevent dehydration. We used the tip of a paintbrush dipped into milk formula, 1 baby took to it straight away while the other was more hesitant. We’ll continue this and keep monitoring over the next few days for any signs of improvement 🥛🤞
(Trying to) pack up some of the babies who are leaving this weekend 😆
Treat time ✨
5 weeks old. Today we’re splitting the sexes into separate cages. I’m having so much fun with these litters, so confident and playful, and they LOVE hands 😆
Happy and playful babies 💖

About to move the Blossom babies into a bigger cage now they’re older and active. I’m so in love with them all 🥺🥺
Wolfgang having his morning groom 🥰
Sleepy baby Baby 🥺
The 2 litters are merged and moved into a new cage full of toys 🥰 they’re 3 weeks old now
A quick upside down groom 😆
Pocus’ litter has their eyes open and are getting very mobile! 😊
The boys playing ‘the floor is lava’ and not realising that they can leave the cage base 😩😂
This afternoon I’ll be taking individual photos of all the babies and contacting owners to arrange collections 😊 🐀
**Please note that we are currently undergoing a name change of our rattery. Formerly known as Candy Rats, our new name is Hyjal Rattery and this will be reflected across all of our content within the next few days. It has been brought to my attention that there was a backyard breeder who shared a similar name to Candy Rats, and so to avoid any confusion we have decided that it was for the best to change our name**
Welcome to Hyjal Rattery, we’re a rattery specialising in breeding healthy, good tempered and tame rats. We breed mainly rex and dumbo rats in Russian Dove, and will be adding Marten & Silver Agouti (foundations from Rivendell), and Russian Dove Agouti in 2021. Based in Nottinghamshire, we have 15 years of rat keeping experience and 6 years breeding experience.
We breed for temperament and health to produce balanced pet rats. We are focusing on improving the fur texture of the rex coat, aiming for thicker fur and tighter curls without compromising the structure of the rat. All our rats are much loved pets who live and are raised in our home. We never breed a doe more than twice in her life, and when she retires she stays here as our pet.
Our rats have large, spacious cages which are regularly and thoroughly cleaned and have different rotations of toys and decor to keep the rats entertained. We make our own mix of food which is based off the Shunamite diet. We also supplement & give extra foods such as baby food, cat food, egg, leftovers etc for health and enrichment.
Babies are handled multiple times a day and leave here extremely tame, they normally leave between 7-10 weeks old depending on how the litter is developing. Kittens are housed in large cages full of colourful toys to benefit their development. We home rats in pairs at a minimum - we will never home out a lone rat. Rats leave here with birth certificates, a care sheet, a small bag of the food they’ve been eating and a sales record confirming their details.
Baby rats have a health check before leaving which we ask the new owner to watch and confirm. We check that their ears, eyes, nose, mouth and ge****ls are clear and free from discharge. We weigh them and check their coat condition to ensure there’s no lice, no balding (in the case of standard coats and rex), or wounds on the body. We check that their incisors have grown in properly and are functional. And finally we prove the gender of the rat and check both testicles have descended on males. Owners will witness the health check either in person or via video where in person viewing isn’t possible. This health check reassures us and the new owners that their pets leave here in good condition. Any adult rats that we breed from must pass the same checks to be bred from, as well as having a good temperament and family history.
We don’t overbreed and so we don’t always have litters available, there may be a wait of weeks or months until we have more babies ready for homing. We always keep back some babies from our litters for future breeding of our lines. All rats sold by us to the public are sold as pets only, and aren’t to be used for breeding. If you would like rats from us to use for breeding, then we are open to discussing it.
We do keep a waiting list for baby rat reservations from our upcoming litters. Feel free to contact us to express your interest in joining this. Rarely, we have juvenile rats, rescued rats, or retired rats also available for rehoming. We don’t profit from selling babies, and the money we make goes straight back into the rats to cover the costs of their care, our website maintenance, and our time spent raising them.
Weekly photo and video updates are sent to new owners via email when reservations are placed on babies. Allocations of bucks/does can be given, but I won't know specifically which babies are going where until they're around 6 weeks old - I need to see them develop before picking my keepers. We do a photoshoot of each rat before they leave us, which will be sent to the new owners. Any photos sent will be clear and good quality. We do post group updates and photos/videos on this page. Our website is also updated with media, breeding plans and availability, but the most recent updates will be via this page.
We’re always here if you need advice about rat care, regardless of if you have rats from us or from elsewhere. If you purchase rats from us and then can’t keep them for any reason, we will take them back in most cases as long as they’re healthy, and try to rehome them. (No refunds will be issued)
We’re an NFRS member but haven’t been registered long enough to join their rattery list yet. We are also a member of the MRC. We focus on breeding healthy, tame, and good tempered pet rats as a hobby alongside our already busy lives, therefore we do try to attend shows where we can.
