๐ŸŽ†๐Ÿพ Happy New Yearโ€™s Eve ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽŠ

As we prepare to see in the New Year with fireworks, letโ€™s not forget about our furry family members who might not enjoy the celebrations as much as we do. Fireworks can be frightening for pets, causing anxiety and stress. Here are a few tips to help keep them calm and safe:

๐Ÿพ Create a Safe Space: Make a cosy, quiet area where your pet can retreat if the noise becomes too much.

๐Ÿ  Keep Them Indoors: Ensure your pets stay inside to prevent them from running off in a panic.

๐ŸŽถ Background Noise: Play soft music or turn on the TV to help mask the sound of fireworks.

๐Ÿงธ Comfort Items: Provide your pet with their favourite toys or a blanket to snuggle.

๐Ÿฅ‚ Also make sure to keep alcohol away from your pets.

If you are worried about tonightโ€™s fireworks, please do not hesitate to call us for advice!

Letโ€™s make sure everyone has a safe and happy New Yearโ€™s Eve! ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿถ๐Ÿฑ

๐ŸŽ„๐Ÿพ Christmas is just around the corner, but for our furry friends, Christmas can be a time of hidden hazards. From tinsel and decorations to festive foods, here are a few things to watch out for:

๐ŸŽ **Toxic treats**: Chocolate, raisins, and alcohol can be poisonous to pets. Keep food out of reach, and make sure guests know what's safe to share.

๐ŸŽ„ **Decor danger**: Tinsel, glass ornaments, and even string lights can be tempting but dangerous for curious paws. Swallowing these can lead to obstructions or internal injuries.

๐ŸŽถ **Stress**: The hustle and bustle of visitors and loud noises can be overwhelming for pets. Make sure they have a quiet, safe space to retreat to when they need a break.

Keep your pets safe and happy this Christmas season by pet-proofing your home.

Any advice needed to help your pets through this festive period, please do not hesitate to call the practice. ๐ŸŽ„๐ŸŽ…

There's a change coming to dog boosters ๐Ÿ•

Our dog boosters are currently made up of 2 different components; DHP and Lepto2 ๐Ÿ’‰
Lepto2 has been *discontinued*.
Due to this change we will now be switching to Lepto4 which covers for 2 extra strains of Lepto.
There is no alternative vaccine for dogs ๐Ÿ™…๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ.

What this means for your dog, for their next booster ONLY:
๐Ÿ’‰ Adult boosters - must come back for a 2nd injection EXACTLY 4 weeks from the time of the 1st
๐Ÿ• Puppies - same as above
+ If they have already had a 1st injection of Lepto2, they will need a 3rd injection EXACTLY 4 weeks after their second

After they have had the 'top-up', they will go back to 1 injection per year

Please bear this timescale in mind when booking your 1st appointment and be sure you have availability exactly 4 weeks later โฐ

๐Ÿ’ธ There will be no extra charge ๐Ÿ’ธ

We appreciate this is a big change for all, please follow this link for more information

โ˜‘๏ธ Tips on how to survive the spooky season..... ๐Ÿ‘ป

๐Ÿง™๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธWith Halloween only a few days away, here's a few hints and tips to help keep your pet happy during the spooky season. ๐Ÿพ

โ€ข Keep Halloween treats out of paws reach ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿซ
โ˜ ๏ธ Chocolate is extremely poisonous to dogs - even a small amount can be fatal!
๐ŸญSweets can also be dangerous for pets if they have the sweetener xylitol (birch sugar) in them.
Please seek veterinary advice if you think your pet may have eaten any of these.

โ€ข Make a den ๐Ÿ›๏ธ
๐Ÿ˜ธ Help your pet feel safe and secure by making them a den so they can have their own quiet space away from the hustle and bustle of trick-or-treaters and visitors.

โ€ข Be home before dark ๐ŸŒƒ
๐ŸฆฎTo avoid stress for your dogs, try and walk them before it gets dark and the Halloween festivities begin.
๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ› Try and encourage your cat to come in earlier before it gets dark. Make sure you have litter trays set up and a cosy bed ready for them if you're shutting the cat flap for the whole night.

Happy National Black Cat Day! ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›

โ“Did you know today is National Black Cat Day - a day to celebrate how fabulous black cats are! ๐Ÿคฉ

๐ŸฑNational Black Cat Day was created by Cats Protection on 27 October 2011 to help celebrate the majesty of monochrome moggies and beautiful black cats. When the campaign was launched, statistics revealed that black and black-and-white cats took, on average, seven days longer to find a home compared to cats of other colours.
More information can be found here: https://www.cats.org.uk/support-us/events/black-cats #:~:text=National%20Black%20Cat%20Day%20is%20held%20each%20year%20on%2027%20October

Please feel free to share your beautiful black cats with us! ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›

National Black Cat Day is held each year on 27 October, recognising the black cats in our lives. Get involved with our latest campaign.

๐ŸŽ‡Firework Season๐ŸŽ‡

Fireworks can be very scary for our pets, with an estimated 80% of owners noticing a change in their dogs behaviour and 48% of dogs in the UK showing signs of fear when they hear fireworks. Cats, rabbits and other small furries can also find this time extremely worrying too๐Ÿ˜จ

If you think there's going to be fireworks going off near you, and you know/are unsure if your microchip details are not up-to-date its important to get them corrected as soon as possible๐Ÿ“ž

Dogs and Cats can react very badly to the unfamiliar/unpredictable sights and sounds of fireworks. Currently, an estimate 53% of microchips have incorrect owner details, meaning that if a pet goes missing, many may not be able to be returned to their owners๐Ÿ’”

If you are unsure of which database to call in order to update your pets microchip please give us a call; if we have a record of you pets microchip number we should be able to advise who best to contactโ˜Ž๏ธ

๐ŸŽ‡๐Ÿถ DOGS ๐Ÿถ๐ŸŽ†

๐ŸพDistract your dog from the noise by having the TV or the radio switched on. Classic FM has a dedicated segment from 5pm-9pm of soothing music to help try to calm your dog (4th + 5th November).

๐Ÿพ Try to act and behave as normal, as your dog will pick up on any odd behaviour. Remain calm and positive and always reward their calm behaviour with dog treats or playing (if they want to play, do not force them). If your pet seeks reassurance, calmly comfort them as you would normally.

๐ŸพNever try to force your dog to face their fears and do not try and tempt them out if they do retreat, as this may cause more stress. You should never tell your dog if they display fearful behaviours; it is natural for a dog to be scared of loud unfamiliar sounds/sights and punishing them will only make them more distressed.

๐ŸพTake dogs out before dark and before any fireworks begin. Once back indoors, ensure all windows/doors are closed to prevent any panicked escaping. If during the evening you do need to briefly open the front/back door, shut your dog safely inside a room first (ensuring time left alone is kept very minimal).

๐Ÿพ If your dog prefers to go away and hide, let them! This is your pets way of coping. You can provide a 'den' style area for you dog to retreat to by using a large blanket/duvet/covering their crate and filling the den with their favourite toys/treats. Closing curtains and turning off some lights can also help with the safe secluded den feeling.

๐ŸŽ†๐Ÿฑ CATS ๐Ÿฑ๐ŸŽ†

๐Ÿพ Ensure your cat has plenty of comfortable hiding places easily accessible. Once hidden, do not disturb them or try to coax them out, allow them to hide and come out once they feel safe.

๐ŸพDon't try and pick up cats or restrain them as this can make them more stressed. Also avoid trying to contain them in one small area, give them access to anywhere that is safe for them to enter and allow them to choose their 'safe spot' freely.

๐Ÿพ Keep your cat indoors after dusk. Once inside, as well as the above mentioned doors also ensure all windows are closed as well as all cat-flaps are locked to prevent escaping.

๐ŸŽ‡๐ŸฐSMALL FURRIES๐Ÿฐ๐ŸŽ‡

๐Ÿพ If living outside try and bring their hutches into garages/sheds. If this is not possible, partially cover the hutch with blankets to make it more sound-proof and block out bright lights (whilst allowing good ventilation).

๐Ÿพ Give them pets plenty of hides and bedding to help them feel safe and reduce the sound.

๐ŸพEnsure to all bonfires are built well away from hutches to prevent any smoke inhalation and any stray hay/bedding catching fire.

๐ŸพWildlife, in particular hedgehogs, find an unlit bonfire the perfect place to sleep! Please build any bonfires as close as possible to the day of the event and check them thoroughly for any signs of wildlife before lighting.

If despite all of the above suggestions your pet remains anxious and fearful during the fireworks period please consider pheromone/supplement/medicinal management. This is something that we can help provide but will need to be discussed on a case by case basis so please give us a call on 01623 579579 if you would like to discuss this option for your pet.
