Cheeky coconut the ferret has a pesky issue with his tail. He's been experiencing some unusual hair loss recently, and his owner was worried about adrenal disease.
He had a cosy little nap (sedation), and his abdomen was checked for any abnormalities with our ultrasound machine. Thankfully, all of his major organs were in tip-top shape and no obvious tumours were identified
Coconut woke up from his nap and had plenty of fun having cuddles and nibbling ear lobes until hometime.

Say hello to Tank! 🚜

This absolute beefcake of a gentle giant has a sore ear and was an angel for his examination allowing Vet Sabrina to look inside his painful ear, assisted with a little bribery! (Tasty chicken snacks 🍗🐔😋)

He has been started on an ear cleaning regime 🧼🧽 with concurrent use of steroids 💊 to see if we can get it under control. Let's hope that he is feeling better soon otherwise further investigations and treatment may be needed, poor lad.

We firmly believe in a fear free approach to our consultations and will try to make your pets visit as painless and pleasant as possible.

🦉 We provide our own OOH Veterinary service!🦉

Here at Ravensdale vets we do not out source our Out of Hours care of your pets.

All our vets and nurses work a rota to provide care for your pets, outside our normal opening hours, located at our sister practice, Staveley Vets 👩‍⚕️

This means when you call our phone lines upon closing, you will be put through to a friendly and familiar member of our clinical team who can access your pets medical records, give advice on your pet's health concerns and provide a consultation, diagnostics and even surgery in an emergency 🐕

Hopefully you won't need us anytime soon, but know we are here to help whatever the time or day ❤️

These handsome boys came in for a flea and worm check over, and they thoroughly enjoyed having a good fuss and some treats with everyone 😀

Fleas are running rampant this time of year, so we recommend using a product that kills adults as well as larvae and eliminates fleas before they can lay eggs in your home.

Lillies are deadly poisonous to cats 😿
All parts of the plant are toxic

🐱This is Nutmeg.
Nutmeg ate some lilies.
Nutmeg spent 48hrs with us.
Thankfully Nutmeg went home with only good memories.
Don't be like Nutmeg.🐱

Seriously though, lily toxicity is a scary business.🌺 They contain insoluble crystals that really mess with animals kidneys 😱

Poor Nutmeg was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Her mum was sorting out and throwing away the lilies from a bunch of flowers. Nutmeg's curiousity got the better of her and she face-planted them! 🤦🏻‍♀️
Thankfully for Nutmeg, her mum and dad acted incredibly quickly and bought her straight down to us 🚑
We took initial bloods to determine her normal levels 💉 she then settled down in a kennel on a high volume of fluid to flush out the toxins for 48hrs and we waited⏳ Finally, a second blood sample and a urine sample were taken to determine how her kidneys had reacted to the shock 🧪 Everything was fine! ❤️ And she made her way home in to the arms of her humans! 🥰

‼️In cases like this, it is imperative that it is caught quickly so the flushing process can begin ASAP! ‼️
Nutmeg is one of the lucky ones ❤️

⭐️🧦 Baby socks wanted 🧦⭐️

When your pet is under a general anaesthetic or sedation it can be difficult for them to maintain their own body temperature.

There are multiple ways we can help your pet such as heat mats, blankets and warm air covers. But, a simple and effective measure is socks! And the perfect size is usually baby socks ⭐️

If you have any old baby socks lying around, now your little one is grown we’d love to take them off your hands to help keep our patients warm ❤️

Please pop them into the practice during our normal opening hours of 8:30am-6:30pm

Otis the staff pet popped in to get his eye checked over due to squinting and redness noticed earlier today.
After being examined by vet Sabrina we found that the conjunctiva (the pink soft tissue that surrounds the eye) was very mildly swollen and sore. He has been started on eye medications and will be rechecked in 2-3days.
Here he is helping his mum RVN Ella on reception.

☀️SUMMER HAS FINALLY ARRIVED! ☀️

🌡️ Although it is great when the sun is shining - the soaring temperatures can pose a huge risk to our furry companions! 🥵
🌟We will be happy to rearrange any non urgent appointments so please call the practice during open hours if you have any concerns🌟

Here are a few tips to help our furry friends in the hot weather ❤️:

🔥Do not walk dogs on pavements. If you cannot hold your hand on the pavement for more than 7 seconds it is too hot for your dog’s paws!

🚗 Do not leave your dog unattended in hot cars. Even with the windows down cars can become ovens and heatstroke can rapidly occur.

🚶‍♀️Dogs should not be walked between 9am and 9pm when it is very hot. This especially important for brachecephalic (flat faced breeds) who are at a higher risk of heatstroke!

💦Consider making a paddling pool in a shady position in the garden or using cool mats in the house.

🐈 Cats suffer from heatstroke too, please keep them inside during extreme hot weather especially if they're elderly.

🐇 Rabbit and Guinea pig hutches should be moved to inside a cool garage or consider moving small furries inside the house temporarily.

Keep your dogs cool in hot weather and be mindful with the humidity as this can be as dangerous 🥵
❄️If you think they may have overheated call your local vet and start cooling them down immediately ❄️🧊❄️🧊❄️

Working in ER this past week: We had four heat injuries each day for two days straight. Four of these were French Bulldogs, which happens to be the most common US breed these days. The others were three Rottweilers (brachycephalic by exam) and one Pit X.

Only ONE survived. NOT a Frenchie. Not a brachycepahlix breed. The Pit X.

Why? He happened to be playing in a pond. He ran and played with kids on land and then in the shallow pond water in 95 F 85% humidity weather until he collapsed. The humidity at his breathing level was probably a lot more, since it was approx 12 inches above water level.

They recognized a problem and brought him in… from one hour away.

On arrival
he was HYPOTHERMIC. Low body temp. Typical of heat injury. We warmed him up, treated his other abnormalities and within a
few hours he waa normal. Like NORMAL. No kidney failure. No coagulopahty. NO PROBLEMS.

Why is this? Probably because this dog reached critical heat injury when he happened to be in the best environement for treatment… IMMEDIATE cooling in water that was colder than him.

RAPID cooling with the coldest source available is what saves dogs with heat injury.

It’s time ro let go of the old wive’s tales of how ice water causes vasoconstriction or that rapid cooling is bad. HEAT is what causes death in heat inrjury, not the coolong method.
