PLEASE READ IN FULL BEFORE RUSHING TO APPLY FOR HER
Lola is an 11 month old Red Fox Labrador retriever, she is spayed, fully vaccinated, microchipped, flea and worm treated and will be rehomed with 5 weeks free pet insurance. She has a clean bill of health.
Lola came to us several weeks ago after her owner could no longer cope with her, sadly for Lola she hadn't left the house for over 4 months having become agoraphobic and a trembling wreck after an incident on a walk. The owner lived on a busy road, she was out walking one day and stopped by a parked lorry, suddenly the lorry started up as Lola was sat next to it and it literally scared the life out of her and she totally freaked out. After that incident Lola developed a massive fear of going anywhere near the front door and even the hallway, as time went on she became more and more anxious and when we went to meet her she was trembling and shaking from head to toe at a stranger coming into the home.
After spending some time sat on the floor with her, she began to settle with me and started taking some high value treats, the owner was amazed as she said she usually would never do that so quickly. Getting her out of the house and into the van to bring her here was so upsetting, I was in tears for her, she was so petrified at just 9 months old BUT she came here to heal, and that's what she has been doing lots of we are pleased to say.
Lola has come on massive strides, she still has plenty to work on in a new home but we feel that if we find the right experienced, committed and very specific home for her now it's in her very best interest to be able to move forward with her new people sooner rather than later.
PLEASE DO READ HER HOMING REQUIREMENTS THOROUGHLY AND ONLY APPLY IF YOU MEET THEM IN FULL.
Inside the home Lola is pretty much perfect, for a youngster she is very well behaved, she is non destructive, she has no separation issues, she is housetrained, sleeps quietly downstairs at night and just generally a great girl to have around loving lots of fuss and attention. She knows her basic commands, is of course very food motivated being a lab and has no issues around food or toys either with other dogs or people.
The two main things that have helped Lola is A) having other confident, playful dogs around and B) us having our own land where she can play freely and feel safe. These 2 criteria are non negotiable for her new home, she needs at least one other young, neutered, playful dog in the home, preferably another very active breed and she needs a rural home away from any noisy traffic with some land attached, a smallholding or home with some acreage is perfect.
Outside in our paddock with the other dogs Lola is in her element, she loves running around with the other dogs and LOVES playing fetch, she will chase a ball all day, in fact we use this a lot to focus her as she can get very overstimulated which results in excessive barking at you as she doesnt quite get how to fully control her emotional state yet and it's her way of expressing excitability, there is certainly no malice behind it at all. She will jump up a lot when excited and finds it difficult to listen when in this state so a calm approach is definitely the way forward to help bring that energy level down. She LOVES her walks on the rest of our land and her recall is good, we dont have to use leads for these walks here so it suits her well.
We have of course been working on her reaction to the lead, harness and leaving the house by the front door. This has been slowly progressing from being comfortable with a lead on around the garden and paddock to sitting petrified and shaking in the hallway when the first attempt to go out the front door was made. We just sat that time, gave treats and reassurance and went back in, no pressure, the next time we moved a few steps forward and so on until we got outside on the front step and just sat and watched at the silence, then next time managed to get down the drive and onto the path way, no cars, no people just being there.
Lola STILL has a very long way to go to progress to being able to walk outside her safe space on a lead, she gets very panicky and this will take possibly months to unpick with her. She needs a new home with people who WILL INVEST this time and effort into her, giving her the time she needs but pushing her to do more at her own pace to help her get her life back so she can eventually enjoy going out and about again without that fear.
Lola does travel very well inside a secure crate in the car, she sees this as a safe space. She doesnt need a crate inside the home. She can live alongside horses and livestock with no issues, she takes no notice here, she could live with dog savvy cats and 100% needs at least one other young playful energetic dog in the home. She can live with children but they will need to be very dog savvy and older 8yrs plus (younger visiting children are fine)
Lola is being fostered in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire, you will of course need to be able to travel to meet her with your resident dog on at least one occasion prior to an adoption (possibly more), a homecheck and adoption donation of £300 applies.
