Be careful with free joinery shavings.

👀🤮Hardwood / dark wood triggers laminitis due to the toxins absorbed through the hoof wall. Once triggered it’s irreversible.

👀🤮 All our products are legally dust extracted and all products sold should be legally dust extracted as the dust from shavings like this are so small it is carcinogenic (causes cancer) and will trigger COPD (coughing) again irreversible damage to both humans and horses. If you employ people in your yard, you have a legal responsibility and obligation not to put excess dust into the stables for your staff and if so a COSHH / health and safety report with dust masks should be present as the fine dust can make you poorly.

👀🤮 Yew and oak contain alkaloids that can be dangerous. Black walnut is highly poisonous. This is why softwood shavings are generally ok (check the pine oil content).

👀🤮 Manufactured bedding such as Bedmax or Blue Frog is “kiln dried” which is where the shavings are laid out on a heated floor to dry the pine oil out, as pine oil is toxic in large doses from inhalation and through the hoof. Again, horse bedding is specifically manufactured to be “horse / equine” safe for a reason. Joinery waste wood shavings need to used with caution.

👀🤮 Most small flake shavings comes from waste wood sources from joinery, most goes through a huge process to separate wood sources but there are still hardwood traces. This is why small flake is expensive due to the extraction process.

👀🤮 Splinters & skin irritation
Be aware that there may be sharp splinters, uncomfortable rough bits of wood or irritating dust particulates that will irritate the skin. Barley straw will irritate some horses the same way some wood sources do. Once a reaction occurs, it can cause ongoing auto immune issues. It’s good practise to encourage your horse to lie down and rest for several reasons. My main reason is when a horse lies down, it’s belly naturally pushes the horses spine back up, assisting against kissing spine & back issues. So making a horses bed deep enough and comfortable so they rest and lie down, is important, if just for sleep, mental well being and recovery for health.

👀❤️ DUST free, virgin wood shavings are 100% safe. Every other product should be used with caution, and check manufacturers labels, we don’t recommend 75% shavings for deep littering as again the wet bed may have traces of hardwood which will seep through the hoof wall.
Be aware your horses head is directly on the bed when sleeping. The horses nostrils are like a hoover, they will breath in large amounts of air and with that dust. Dust gets clogged in the aveloi of the branches of the lungs. Horses will then try to cough but it turns into a glue in the lunges affecting breathing and performance. Horses need sufficient airway flow to work. Once clogged and gluey, it causes the cells of the lungs to become inflamed and then react and can then cause cancer and other issues. COPD.

❤️ Times are difficult and costs are high, a lot of us appreciate that, we do not recommend you use joinery shavings at all as the source wood and dust content can’t be verified and small traces of dust or poisonous wood will either make your horse short term very poorly or long term have an effect on breathing, laminitis and organ failure. Not just for your horse but for you as well.
