It's time to get your faecal worm egg counts sent in and find out if your horse really needs that wormer!🪱🐴

Did you know?
• 70-80% of the parasite treatments are unnecessary using WEC?
• Targeted worming is proven to be cheaper!
• Over-worming causes wormers to become ineffective.
• Resistance to wormers is already widespread
• Over-worming is damaging to the environment

As part of our commitment to fight resistance to wormers in the UK, we recommend regular worm egg counts instead of the traditional process of worming horses at set intervals throughout the year.

A sample of faeces should be submitted to our laboratory 3-4 times a year during the grazing season (from spring to late autumn/early winter). Samples are examined under the microscope and the number of worm eggs present in the faeces is counted. This gives a good guide to assess the need for parasite treatment and which treatment would be better suited.

Your horse can be one of the 70-80% of horses that don’t need worming!

In addition to Faecal Worm Egg counts we have available the Equi-Sal saliva tapeworm test and redworm blood tests.

Please contact us on 01858 465668 and we will be happy to discuss your worming needs!

Flash’s dental technician did a great job of referring him for further investigation with Equine Dentistry Certificate Holder, John Abbott. 🦷🐴

On examination Flash was diagnosed with EORTH, a dental disease often affecting geriatric horses. Dental radiographs were carried out and revealed various points of concern including fractures of two mandibular incisors. A follow-up visit was scheduled and teeth of concern extracted.

Pinworm or Oxyuris Equi 🪱🐴

In this case pinworm symptoms were spotted at a visit by equine vet John and a cellotape sample was collected. Equine nurse Ellie was able to analyse the sample in house and confirm diagnosis.

Adult female pinworms exist in the re**um and lay eggs around the a**s of the horse.

Signs of pinworm include;
- Intense itching
- Hairless patches
- Inflamed skin around the tail and bottom
- Loss of condition
- Cream coloured substance around a**s

The best way to prevent and treat pinworm is through good hygiene including; disinfecting and cleaning of environment and equipment. As well as, cleaning daily around bottom, dock and tail with disposable wipes. Appropriate, targeted worming can also be beneficial.

Canker, or proliferative pododermatitis, is a disease process resulting in chronic hypertrophic proliferation of hoof tissues 🐴

Canker causes lameness in horses and can be present in one or multiple hooves. It can originally present as thrush however has differing characteristics such as; cauliflower-like horn growth and spongy appearance of the frog, the tissue may be white in colour and have a foul smell.

Early diagnosis is important to establish prompt aggressive treatment to give the best chance of removing the canker tissue and reduce the chances of reoccurrence.

Our equine vet Erica and nurse Ellie attended to a horse with a nail in his foot.

Our client did a great job and left the nail in place, keeping her horse comfortable until we were able to attend. Meaning that we were able to carry out radiographs on site to establish whether the nail had hit any important structures within the foot.🐴🩻
