What do you think of Milo's fresh trim?

His owner took the opportunity to give him a full MOT whilst he was under for his castration today - I think he looks quite pleased about his haircut, or that could be the drugs 🤔🙈

It feels like I've blinked and the year has flown by!
Being a vet is 100% my favourite part of the job, but I've had to become competent at DIY, website design, organisation, running a business (hurray for accountants!) and more. Thank you to everyone who has made it possible and here's to another year of trying to keep animals as healthy as possible 🤞

Praying I never have to install door handles or locks again as that very nearly sent me over the edge 🤣

Boerenslim.

One of my favourite Dutch words which translates to 'farmersmart'. It's what I thought of last night's set up for keeping this cow from lying down against the wall whilst popping her uterus back in 💅

Although she was initially laid with her uterus downhill and against the wall, some calcium and the sight of her calf persuaded her to get up and embrace the makeshift calving yoke 🚜

She's feeling much better this morning by the looks of things! It's always the 'pet' cows getting into trouble 🙈 i wonder if anyone can guess her name 🤔 (clue... she was named by a 5 year old...)

It's certainly feeling like a Wednesday for this big lad! He'll soon be recovered from his vasectomy and ready to entice...

Hope everyone is as happy as this little creature this morning!

I was going to do a serious post last night about adding warm water to your horse's water supply to prevent reduced drinking and therefore colic, but I left the stable door ajar and spent some time catching my horse in the dark... so you get a picture of Thea instead!

Our first vet talk evening was a fabulous success - thank you to everyone who came for being so enthusiastic and asking lots of questions!

Is that....the sun? 😍
Temperatures are just threatening to drop now so time to plan that winter wormer! 🐴

Top tips:
-Wait until we've had a few good frosts, as redworm encyst in the horses intestines as temperatures drop
-A moxidectin-based wormer will treat encysted redworm (no evidence that the others can treat this stage of redworm)
-Only a wormer with praziquantel or pyrantel will target tapeworm

There are 3 types of testing to cover the major parasites of horses:
-Roundworms ➡ faecal egg counts
-Tapeworms ➡ saliva test
-Encysted redworm ➡ blood test
In an idea world, we would reduce wormer resistance by testing all horses for all 3 types before blanket treating them. However, if not testing for all 3, then do remember to worm once we get some crunchy frosty weather!

*As always this is general advice, and advice may vary from horse to horse*

Why keep your dog on a lead around livestock? 🐶🐑

These four ewes were attacked by 2 loose dogs a few weeks ago and very nearly didn't make it...
3 hours of flushing and stitching, weeks of bandaging (very dedicated farmers!) and we're nearly there 🤞

It's only because these ladies were so very stoic (we even gave them some grub whilst stitching up and they were very keen to eat) that they survived both the stress of the attack, and the risk of wound breakdown and infection

🐏Following a dog attack, an owner almost always could never imagine their pet would be capable of injuring a sheep - but if we assume they could/would do then maybe we can avoid situations like this (sheep-trained dogs excluded of course) 🐑

Percy you're a superstar patient! 🌟 This absolute gentleman was seen lacking impulsion from behind - after an examination and xrays we spotted some hock arthritis. He should have some more spring in his step after having his hocks medicated this morning 🤞 If you're concerned about a change in your horse's movement, it could be a sign they need a helping hand 💉 Get in touch on 01472 465000 or [email protected] P.s. please ignore my teacher voice in the video, it was for the benefit of the student present 🙈

What do you see here? I see a horse with a comfortable back which is one of the best things to see both as a vet and horse owner 😍 Especially after some spicy jumping the other night 🤔 It's not been an easy road for this mare who initially was very reactive to being touched ✨️anywhere✨️ except her face, but a sprinkling of steroid and Arthramid in just the right places and she's finally comfortable in her own skin!
