This lovely boy is Tarzan - he went missing for 5 days and when he returned home his owners noticed he had a swollen foot. So they visited us at the hospital for a vet to check Tarzan over.
Tarzan was given some antibiotics and pain relief for his poorly paw, had a check over and went home to recoup following his 5 day adventure!
However, after finishing his course of antibiotics Tarzan started to lick his paw and stopped weight bearing, so was limping around. He returned to see vet, Rachael and this although his paw was less swollen, it had become very infected.
Tarzan was admitted for sedation so that a more thorough examination could be performed. Tarzan's paw was thoroughly cleaned, some of the skin on the pads and soft tissue around the digits (toes) was beginning to die off, along with some of his nails.
It became clearer to our veterinary team that Tarzan had likely been caught in a snare and somehow managed to be released from it and returned home!
Tarzan visited RVN's Kate and Amber for bandage changes every couple of days, alongside laser therapy to promote healing in his paw.
It has been a long healing process for both him and his owners, taking two months of strict rest (which was hard for both owners and Tarzan as he is an explorer by name and nature!) and daily medication.
Tarzan has been such a sweet brave boy throughout the whole process, many cats going through what he has been through would not have tolerated the treatment as he did!
Our team really enjoyed his visits and snuggles for bandage changes, laser therapy and are overjoyed Tarzan has been signed off! Though the team will miss is snuggles! 🐱 🥰

This week is World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW), a global campaign that is celebrated annually to raise awareness about antibiotic resistance and the dangers it poses to both human and animal health.
It's critical that we preserve the effectiveness of our antibiotics for as long as possible, which can be achieved by only using them when necessary. The battle against antibiotic resistance is a collective effort, and we all have a role to play.
We’re going blue to raise awareness. Are you ready to do your part?

The loud bangs and flashing lights of fireworks can be distressing for small animals. As Bonfire Night approaches, ensuring that your pets are well-prepared for the occasion is important. If you own small animals like rabbits or guinea pigs, here are some tips to help them remain calm and happy.
🧶Provide extra bedding if your pet lives outdoors so they can burrow down and feel safe from any bright lights and loud noises. This will give them a comfortable and secure space to hide away from the excitement.
🏡Consider bringing your pet indoors for the night to shield them from the noise and commotion of the evening. Playing some relaxing music can also help to muffle the sound of fireworks and create a calming atmosphere.
🚪If your pet already lives indoors, close curtains and windows to dampen the sound of loud bangs and create a more peaceful environment.
If you have any further questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

🍂 🐱 As autumn sets in and the nights grow longer, it's time to prepare for Bonfire Night. However, while fireworks bring us joy, they can be distressing for our feline friends.
As clever creatures, cats require extra care during this time. Here are some tips to help keep your cat safe and comfortable:
🏠 Keep your cat indoors where possible and make sure they are microchipped
🤫Create a cosy and quiet space inside where they can relax and avoid the noise.
🐱Consider giving them calming treats or supplements to help them stay calm. A pheromone diffuser may also be beneficial, particularly to start using ahead of the celebration season.

Serena finds the reason for Hector’s drooling problem…….
Look away if you are a little squeamish. One of our team managed to capture the moment vet Serena removed a fragment of stick from under Hectors’ tongue this afternoon at our hospital at Market Weighton.
Hectors’ owners felt he was not himself and was reluctant to open his mouth yesterday. We were told that Hector likes to play with sticks and Serena was suspicious of a swelling under Hectors’ tongue and how this linked to a swelling on his neck when she saw the young spaniel as one of her morning appointments.
Once anaesthetised, Serena confirmed this swelling under his tongue had a solid lump within it and was likely a piece of foreign material that had entered and been in so long it had actually healed over. After making an incision , the piece of stick was removed.
The hole was well flushed and then closed up with a few sutures with Hector going back home to his owners this evening with the advise he retires from playing with sticks. This was a lucky escape for Hector!
Very proud of our entire team!

Puppy Party week 4 - GRADUATION 🐾 🏅
Well done to all our pups and owners!
This week the pups graduation puppy classes with distinction!
Our team hope you’ve enjoyed the classes as much as they have. Puppy socialisation is so important and the sharing of tips and tricks, different experiences, techniques, and general pup care is vital to a happy life for puppies and owners.
We are looking forward to starting again with our new class but for now, a huge well done to Lilly, Ted, Molly, Snoop, Bailey, Rafferty, Rolo and Bertie! 🐾
Puppy Party week 3 was all about general health and care of your puppy.
This week was jammed packed with information from basic dental and ear care, and flea and worming to neutering advice and coping with fireworks and anxious behaviours.
This is a crucial week in puppy training! Owners need to be informed and educated on the preventative measures they can take and put in place to ensure their pup gets the very best start in life. These first months in a pups life shape their future and we all strive for a happy and healthy one for all pets!
Another huge well done to all pups and owners! Next week is our last week and the pups will graduate from Wicstun Puppy Classes so please stay tuned for inevitable cuteness!
We have had a lot of interest in our puppy parties so please bear with us. Pups can join the parties up to the age of 20 weeks old (starting from around 12 weeks old or time of full course of vaccinations) so please don’t think you’ve missed out! Our team will be in touch 🐾
Week 2 - our Puppy Party was all about basic training.
This week in class our pups had a lot of fun with the team. Ruth, Izzy and Emily worked with owners on basic commands like, “watch me” and “leave it” which are great tools for all pups to learn. They strengthen the bond and trust between dog and owner, as well as helping the pups learn essential life skills.
The class also talked about the different types of play, conquering the puppy biting phase, and the importance of play and calm signals.
Training and teaching is great for dogs of all ages (you can teach an old dog new tricks!) - mental stimulation can be as rewarding as physical exercise!
The class had a great time and every puppy mastered a ‘sit’ by the end of the session!
Well done to all pups and owners!
Next week we will be talking all things health and basic care for puppies!
Our Puppy Parties are 4 week courses, running on Tuesdays at 7pm. Please contact us on 01430 873219 for more information.
Puppy Parties are back!
Last night we welcomed our first class of 2023!
The pups first week was an introduction to the vets, and the importance of socialisation with lots of smells to explore and friends to play with.
Puppy socialisation from a young age is very important for development, and when done properly can prevent many behaviour problems.
Next week we will be working on basic training, play and learning new commands!
