After a busy week you can't beat a walk along the beach. We all need to relax and our pets are no different.

One way to help relax our pets is to give them a deep tissue massage to release their happy hormones and relieve tension.
At Coast & Country Animal Physiotherapy we are pleased to offer massage only sessions for all pets young and old.

With the weather looking wet and windy tomorrow. Did you know that the weather can affect the mobility of our pets. It can commonly cause 'flare ups' in our arthritic and senior pets.

Alongside treating pets last week I did some teaching for Paws Indoors Mobile Vet . Such a pleasure to spread the word about physio and laser to benefit their clients. We had a lovely morning. Thank you 😊

🐾🐾 Welcome to this gorgeous Teddy bear, Cooper. He had surgery to help with a cranial cruciate ligament rupture and is now coming for physiotherapy.
We are doing laser and massage treatments alongside a home exercise program to try to build up the muscle on his back leg. We always focus on the whole pet rather than just the diagnosed condition.
Cooper is very sore and tense in his back due to what we call compensatory issues. We are therefore working on making this comfortable for him too. His owners are very committed and we hope to have him feeling better very soon. 🐾🐾

Welcome to Blizzard.
Here he is relaxing after his physio and massage appointment ❤️
Blizzard visited us for treatment after having cruciate ligament surgery at Rackheath Vets .
Our aim with rehabiliation is to get him walking normally again and use exercises to build up his muscle mass and strength. He was such a good boy for his first session of treatment and home exercise demonstration.

Don’t be afraid to exercise your pet after an arthritis diagnosis.

Arthritic joints benefit from keeping moving to help with lubrication and therefore decreasing pain. To meet this requirement we would recommend exercising little and often throughout the day rather than a big block.

Allowing your pet to sniff as much as possible will also help with mental stimulation and tiring them out without stressing the joints.

Proof of just how amazing physiotherapy can be for our pets ❤️

Over the past couple of years, some of you may have heard of the Cambridge Vet School non-surgical IVDD study. The results have just been published. It’s a great write-up and quite groundbreaking!

Dogs unable to walk due to disc extrusion (IVDD) were cared for WITHOUT surgery. They had an MRI scan at the start of the study and another MRI scan after 12 weeks. These scans helped to make the diagnosis, and they also showed how compressed (squashed) the spinal cord was in each case.

The big questions were:
❓How many of these dogs would start walking again without having had surgery?
❓How compressed was each dog’s spinal cord at the start of the study?
❓Were they still just as compressed at the end of the study, 12 weeks later?

Results were interesting and included the following:
✅Out of the dogs that had deep pain sensation, NEARLY ALL of them (49 of 51 dogs, 96%) started walking again within 12 weeks. Most of them walked much sooner than this.
✅Out of those with NO deep pain sensation, nearly half of them (10 of 21 dogs, 48%) started walking again within 12 weeks. That’s WITHOUT surgery.
✅Spinal cord compression reduced in some dogs over the 12 week study period. That’s despite not having had surgery to remove the disc material that caused this compression.
✅Many dogs started walking again despite the fact that their spinal cord was still compressed, ie ‘Recovery was not dependent on the resolution of compression’

💛The authors concluded that if spinal surgery isn’t possible as it’s not available in the area or is too expensive, non-surgical management is a valid alternative.

There’s plenty of detail in the write-up, and it’s free for all to read or download via this link: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/jvim.17149

The extra fur between your pets paws can cause them to slip and slide on different surfaces such as laminate and tiled flooring. This can aggravate their arthritis or cause further injury.

To help them gain more grip carefully and gently trim some of the excess fur. As part of our treatment sessions we can check their paws and use mini clippers to help keep them nice and trim 😊

Becoming a small independent business owner and creating a physiotherapy centre in the heart of Norfolk!

Opening my own business in physiotherapy away from the vet practice is a dream come true. It allows me to support owners and their pets through their rehabilitation within the centre and recovery at home.

As a Vet Nurse I can use my background as a foundation to help try and bridge the gap between veterinary care and the use of animal rehabilitation.

In people physiotherapy is commonly recommended and utilised for a wide range of conditions. This however is not reflected in the same way for our pets. I want to help bridge this gap by providing a wide range of treatments to help keep our pets moving and pain free.
