Linognathus Setosus β Sucking Lice
We found this little parasite on one of our four legged clients today. Linognathus is parasitic sucking louse that is common to dogs. Its pointed head is shaped especially for sucking blood meals. It has six legs with the first pair being slightly shorter than the second and third. These legs are equipped with pincer like claws, which allow it to hang on to its host. The females can grow to 2mm and the males to 1.5mm. This species of lice can bite humans - although itβs not capable of infesting or living on us. Luckily preventing this type of infestation on your pet is very simple and can be done my applying a topical treatment to the skin. Clinical signs associated with a Lice infestation may include excessive itchiness and scratching, a dry scruffy looking coat and hair loss. If you are concerned your pet may have a parasite infestation, please contact the surgery to make an appointment Tel: 01290 550 200.
