This weeks story is from Gabrielle about her horse Charlie's freak accident ๐ŸŽ

Charlie is a 20 year old Irish sports horse who I have owned for 10 years, he is typically very chilled out and easy to handle. So it was very out of character for him to spook badly on the walk to his winter turn out field one morning.

He spooked and bolted away from me down the lane and out of sight. We believe Charlie tried to jump the big field gate trying to get to his herd but never made it over or just ran straight through it. It was a total freak accident. His main injury was on back left leg, with 3 significant cuts down his leg. We also had a very broken metal gate. (Unfortunately the gate didn't make a full recovery like Charlie and had to be replaced.)

After the incident on 09/03 we called MBM for an emergency call out on a Saturday afternoon. Jamie was quick to attend to assess the damage to his leg and bandage him up swiftly. We knew then that it would take a while for Charlie's cuts to heal and he would be on box rest for a number of weeks.

The follow-up care given by Stephanie was just fantastic. She guided me on all the correct dressings and bandages I would need to use in order to change Charlie's dressing myself, which ended up being every 3 days. 2/3 cuts healed quickly, but the middle one needed more attention and became worse before it got better. Another call in from Stephanie to sort the wound by trimming proud flesh away, more tips and tricks were advised, and thankfully, the wound started to heal and close.

Charlie was a perfect patient for 70 days of box rest. His bandages were finally allowed to come off, and he could get back out with his field mates. He very much enjoyed getting out in his summer field to enjoy time to relax and be a horse again! We have slowly returned to ridden work, and we are building his fitness back up so we can get back to hacking up the rolling hills in the Brisbane Glen of Largs!

Thank you to the full team at MBM for helping me get Charlie back sound so we can enjoy the summer together ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿฉต

Thank you, Gabrielle, for sending in Charlie's story. We are so glad to hear he is doing well, and we hope you are both back out doing what yous love soon!

This weeks story comes from Amy and her horse Cava ๐ŸŽ

After purchasing Cava from Ireland in April 2023, we didnโ€™t get off to the best of starts.

Cava was continually running away from my leg & having sloppy poles down.

After investigation from the dream team at MBM, we discovered he had stomach ulcers.

After treating him, we have gradually progressed from strength to strength. We have qualified for many of our targets, including Discovery & Newcomers second rounds & have already qualified for the Amateur Championships at Aintree in November. ๐Ÿคฉ

I canโ€™t thank the team at MBM enough for all their help & support throughout our journey. ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿด๐Ÿฅฐ

Our second feel good Friday post is from Marnie and her pony Clive.

In January, we went to Greenfields and we qualified for Aintree for the second time, but we noticed Clive had a very sore back and was running away from the pain.
We had tried Physio, but he was still very sore. We decided to phone MBM vets.
Stephanie came out and performed acupuncture on him, which did help to some degree however, the prognosis was not great for his full return to fitness. We got his saddle refitted. However, he was still quite sore, so we decided to bring him to Syke Farm to have a lameness work up.
John Morris did a full lameness work up and afterwards, he said Clive could be slowly brought back into work and with good management could possibly make a full recovery. 7 weeks later, after slow reintroduction to work, Clive became Reserve Champion at Polnoon Working Hunter Show. We also headed down to Aintree to compete in the Arena Event Finals last week where Clive went really well.
We are so happy and proud that he has came back into work so happily and with such enthusiasm!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the staff and vets at MBM for all your help to get Clive back to full fitness.

Thank you, Marnie, for sending in Clive's story. We are so pleased to hear he is doing well and wish you the best of luck for the rest of the season ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ€

Grab a cuppa and have a read so we can make sure your horses visit to the clinic goes as smoothly as possible โ˜•๏ธ

We would like to make sure that any visits to the practice for routine procedures go as smoothly as possible for all patients as well as protecting everyoneโ€™s privacy. Therefore, we have outlined what to expect below.

Firstly, we would like to gently remind clients to only access the stable block when accompanied by a staff member. We also kindly ask you not to touch other inpatients.

As a general rule, we ask our clients to wait outside the treating areas whilst procedures are being performed. This is in line with many equine and human hospitals in the UK. This also allows our team to deliver the highest standard of care in a safe environment for both us and our patients. It also maintains client confidentiality, biosecurity and a more professional workplace. This is especially important when certain equipment is being used e.g. for radiation safety around x ray machines. Once the vet has carried out the procedure on your horse, they can talk you through their findings and diagnosis along with any treatment plan required without any distractions while your horse is relaxed and recovering in a stable.

When arriving at Syke with your horse pleaseโ€ฆ

Please do not unload until you have been met by one of our nursing team/hospital vet. They will greet you and your horse before showing you into the stables to get your horse settled in. At this point, you will be asked to complete and sign a consent form, before being shown through to reception where you are more than welcome to wait on your horse. Alternatively, you are always able to drop off your horse or pony and the vet can chat with you over the phone.

๐’๐ญ๐š๐›๐ฅ๐ž ๐š๐œ๐œ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ, we cannot allow visitors access to the stables without a member of staff. We ask clients not to touch other inpatients when in the stable block. We also ask that if you need anything from your car/horse box to please take it with you before waiting in reception. By limiting the footfall through the stables and treatment areas helps to maintain biosecurity and client confidentiality which protects our inpatients.

Our first feel good Friday post is and EMS success story, which was sent in by Lianne.

We have owned Duncan for just over 2 years. When we got him he had been out of work and was a bit on the heavier side. My 13 year old daughter spent time getting to know him and quickly developed an incredible partnership. Rebekka had a fabulous first season on him but then late 2022 he looked unhappy on his feet and just not his usual self.

We called the vet who were with us that day. Symptoms came out of nowhere and were quite apparent. Warm feet, reluctant to walk and clearly very sore. Laura took his bloods which came back that same day, his sugar levels were off the scale. It was very clear we had a severe case of EMS.

Natalie and Laura together devised a management plan.
Little forage but often, big soft bed, metformin and specialist farrier consultation.

We followed the plan to the letter and Duncan made great progress. He lost 70kilos over a period of 5 months and was back to work 4 months after his initial diagnosis.

We continue to follow the management plan and have his bloods checked twixe a year. Duncan leads a relatively normal life now. He has daily turnout in a small paddock and is ridden 6 days a week.

This year, in particular, Duncan has qualified for the 138 SJ at Hickstead, The Highland show, and Horse Of The Year Show. It will be his and Rebekkas first time at Hickstead and Hoys which is a real dream come true.

EMS is a very manageable condition, and equines can go on to enjoy a successful and full career. It's very important to have a good team around you, which we did. Any concerns we had were listened to and acted upon by all of the vets at MBM. Real continuity of care which is so important.

Our thanks goes to MBM for supporting Duncan through a very difficult time and continuing to support his recovery.

Thank you, Lianne, for sending in Rebekka and Duncan's story.

I am sure everyone will join us in wishing them both the best of luck for all the finals, and other competitions, they have coming up this year ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿ€

Quidding is when horses drop balls of food out of their mouth rather than swallowing them. There are different causes of quidding, but quite often, it is caused by dental pain. A dental exam should help to identify the cause and what treatment is required to make the horse more comfortable.

We are holding a routine dental clinic on Thursday 20th June๐Ÿฆท Where we will be offering a considerably Payment will be required on the day.

One of the most difficult aspects of owning any animal is coming to terms with saying goodbye. Making the decision to euthanise is often accompanied by a wide range of emotions, and at MBM, we strive to ensure our service is compassionate and supportive to our clients and their horses. We understand that speaking about euthanasia can be extremely distressing for many owners, so we have included some useful information below.

If there is anything we can do to help you and your horse, please do not hesitate to contact us or alternatively have a look at our website for more information - https://www.mbmvetgroup.com/equine/services/euthanasia

In the unfortunate event of an emergency, taking the immediate decision to euthanise the horse to prevent further suffering will take precedent over location. In most circumstances, you will be able to decide on the location of the euthanasia at home or on your livery yard in advance.

Hopefully, a quiet location in familiar surroundings will allow you to say your goodbyes privately. However, we must keep in mind the collection vehicle will need to access the area afterwards.

Keepsakes: Memories are important. On request we can take a clipping of mane, a tail plait, or pull a shoe for you as a treasured keepsake. Having the details organised ahead of time can help the process run smoothly.

Equine Recovery Services: We work closely with Equine Recovery Services, a small independent company dedicated to helping owners at the end of their horseโ€™s or poniesโ€™ life. They offer both routine uplift or individual cremation. More information can be found at https://www.equinerecoveryservices.co.uk/.

In the event of a planned euthanasia appointment, we can liaise with Equine Recovery Services to organise collection of the horse after the vet has attended. If you would like to enquire further about this, contact our office on 01563 522 701. Whilst we will help to set up this service as a courtesy to our clients, we are two separate businesses, and therefore, upfront payment is required for the collection aspect of the service prior to the appointment.
