Strangles is a highly infectious bacterial disease 🦠which can affect groups of horses. It is important to prevent the organism from coming onto your yard. The best way to do this is to use good biosecurity whilst out competing and robust isolation procedures for new horses arriving.😷

Our recommendation is that all new horses coming to a yard are placed in an isolation box away from the main yard. 🚫✋Whilst there they should be managed separately from the main yard with their own handler, tack, and feed utensils. They should be isolated for a minimum of 14 days during which time they should have a faecal worm egg count performed to prevent parasites being shed when turned out and a strangles blood sample taken at 14 days.

The blood sample is a useful tool to assess whether the horse has been exposed to the bacteria which causes strangles.
If this is the case, then the horse will require further testing (gutteral pouch wash) before they can be allowed to join the main herd.
