🐶 puppy craziness can be increased by teething.
🦷 Puppies loose all their teeth and end up with their 42 adult teeth by the age of 6- 7 months.
🐕 There are times when teeth is pretty intense (Bertie's lots at least 5 this week)
🆘️ So what can you do to help:
🦴 Chews - make sure they have lots of natural chews such as stag bars, root chews pizzles, rabbits ears etc
🧊 Ice cubes - these are fine for your puppy, you could freeze a small treat in the middle to give them something to chew towards or frozen wet food.
❄️ Chew toys - there are lots of puppy chew toys available, some of them can be frozen for extra relief

☹️ I dislike head collars because dogs do.
⏩️Most people will use a headcollar as a quick fix for pulling on lead without conditioning the dog to it.
🐶It just gets put on their nose ( one of the most sensitive parts of their body), and they get dragged around by it
🛑No piece of equipment will stop pulling, only training will.
⏳️Using a harness and taking the time to teach your dog a loose lead is what gets the walk to continue and not pulling.
👟A correctly fitting, non restrictive harness is much more comfortable for your dog to be wearing
👃But also allow them to sniff and make the walk for them you'll get less pulling

🐈⬛ Ex racing greyhounds can find it really difficult to resist chasing fluffy things. Especially if like cats and squirrels, they move.
🐿 You'll never get rid of your dog's prey drive, however, you can work with it.
👀 We've taught Betsy that it's OK to look at things as long as she doesn't chase, she checks back in and gets rewarded.
👍All with positive reinforcement, no aversives or punishment need
1️⃣ teach your dog a focus word such as look
2️⃣ use this around low level distractions
3️⃣ practise around increasing distractions

🐶Ozzy has hit adolescence and lost his way.
🐕One of the biggest issues is loosing his recall so while retraining it we're introducing interactive play as a great reward for his recall.
It also has the benefits of being
😀Fun
👀Increasing focus
💪Strengthening your bond
🎉And being a great reward

My top 5 tips for teaching your puppy a leave it
1️⃣ Always reward for with something higher value than what you're asking them to leave. For example ask them to leave biscuit but reward them with sausage. This way, they always think that you have something better than what you're asking them to leave so in the real world, they're more likely to leave that bit of half eat and pizza because they think you have something better.
2️⃣ Don't allow under the thing that you're asking them to leave. This then makes leave it temporary and your dog is unlikely to reliably leave stuff long-term as they think, there's a chance, they might be allowed it.
3️⃣ Reward away from the item you're asking them to leave if possible right next to you. This way, you gain a leave it which also brings your dog back to you and away from the item. so you can reward them easily.
4️⃣ While they're learning, make sure they can't get to the item that you are asking them to leave. I normally start by using a piece of food in my hand so I can close my hand and stop my dog from being able to get it. This stops your dog from self rewarding and undoing the training session.
5️⃣ Have patience, don't keep repeating, leave it. Say it once and then wait. The more times you say it in practice, the more unreliable it will be in the real world because your dog will think that you will say multiple times before they have to act on it.

Adolescence is a very difficult time for our dogs.
🤯Their brains are rewiring.
🧪They have lots of new hormones and
🐕they have new social maturities to go through.
💡My best tips are to take things right back to basics.
❌️Remove all the distractions and
🏠 start their training in the house.
⏫️then gradually increase the distractions as they are able to cope.
⏫️Increase the reward you're using
🍪if you've been using biscuits
🍖change to chicken or cheese or sausage.
🕑Also give them time, do not expect instantaneous focus around distractions.
👦adolescence is hard, just as it is for human teenagers

Dogs and Christmas trees top tips:
🍫Never put chcolate or sweets on or under your tree
🦺Consider using a playpen to keep your dogs safe round your tree -
⭐️it can easily be removed
🎄stops any decorations being knocked off by wagging tails or taken and played with,
💡wires being chewed, or
🎁presents being opened
💦 stops the tree water being drunk
🌲Means you can have a full size tree instead of a tiny one on a table
Whatever you decide, make sure your dog is safe, especially if they're left unsupervised with the tree

Everyone wants their dog to walk nicely so you can enjoy your walks without your arm being pulled out of its socket!
Simple tip to help stop your dog pulling
📏Use a longer lead. A 1 m lead doesn't give your dog any distance before it starts pulling because it's at the end of the lead. A longer lead allows your dog more flexibility to explore before the lead goes tight. A 1.5 or 2meter lead is perfect.
✋️Stop walking if your dog is pulling! If you walk while your dog is pulling they will think they're meant to be pulling. Stop walking as soon as the lead goes tight, wait for your dog to pay attention to you and then carry on walking.

Why do I teach my dog recall to middle?
🎉 Fun - way more fun than coming back and sitting
🐕 Proximity- they have to come to me to do it
🦺 Safe space - I can protect my dog from approaching people and dogs
🐶 No lead - if your dog has a good middle, it can stay there as people walk past, so there's no need to put it back on lead

Why do I teach stand?
✅️Stand can be equally as useful as sit or down, but many trainers don't teach it
🌧Stops your dog sitting in puddles while waiting at the road
💊Perfect for dogs with joint issues or arthritis when sitting might cause discomfort
🩺Makes vet trips feeling their stomach or taking their temperature easier
✂️Easier grooming sessions
🛑 stays and waits can also be taught in stand as well as sit and down
How many times today have you asked your dog to sit, and was it actually necessary?
I'm always bad at remembering to take photos and videos while I'm teaching but here's a few from this weekends classes and 121s

How to get focus around sheep
1️⃣ teach your dog to chase a treat you throw and to come check in with you for another creating a triangle movement
2️⃣ use this around low level distractions
3️⃣ use this around high level distractions start at a big distance and reduce it as your dog is able
4️⃣ have your dog on lead at a big distance from the sheep and practise your treat throwing game
5️⃣ keeping hold of the lead or longline gradually move closer to the sheep
🦺safety first make sure your dog is always on a lead around livestock
🐑 do not do this when the sheep are pregnant or have lambs
🐏 do not stress the sheep

The firework game associates the bang of the fireworks with something positive coming afterwards.
🔊Listen to the sound of the fireworks
🥓immediately throw treats.
Your dog doesn't need to sit or do anything, just throw treats, make it fun for them to catch the treats.
This means that the scary sound is always followed by something fun and tasty. After a few goes your dog will start listening to the sound then looking at you for the nice reward.
This technique works with any sound such including thunder
Also:
🛏 make sure they have somewhere cosy they can get away from it - could be a: crate, cosy bed,
behind the sofa, under a table, under your bed
🥓 get their favourite enrichment ready could be a food treat or ripping up boxes
🎆play the fireworks game - see tomorrow's reel for details
🚶♂️ on the night walk them well before it gets dark
🔊 shut the curtains and turn the TV or radio up
🎇 if your dog is scared and your neighbours are planning a display I would take your dog out - visit a friend or take them for a drive or to the local motorway services as they're normally clear from fireworks
📞Make sure their collar id tag and microchip details are up to date just in case

Puppies need up to 20 hours sleep or good quality rest a day.
Without this, you're more likely to see excessive:
🦷Biting, nipping
🤾♀️Jumping
🚨Destroying things
👂Not listening
