Why your groomer won't clip off your double coated dog.

As the weather warms up, the groomer parlour gets busier. Quite often we get asked to clip off a double coated dog to help make them cooler. In fact doing this will make it worse, exposing them to more heat and here's why.

🐾 Lets start with what is a double coat?
Literally what it says on the tin, the dog has two different types of coat on them. The outer guard coat, which is the shiny coat on top. The second coat is the undercoat, the soft denser coat. Some examples of breeds with a double coat are Collies, Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and Pomeranians.

🐾 How does having a double coat help in the summer?
The guard coat help to reflect the suns rays away from the body, whilst a dry, tangle free undercoat traps a layer of cool air. When the coat is not compacted with too much undercoat excess body heat can escape.
A clipped coat won't have the protection against the sun and heat in the summer, preventing the dog to regulate their body temperature.

🐾 What can I do to help my double coated dog stay cool?
A well groomed double coat is the answer. If the coat is compacted with loose undercoat the excess body heat can't escape and they won't be able to insulate the layer of cool air.
Regular brushing and trips to the grooming parlour for a de-shed will help with this.
Imagine standing outside in the heat wearing a sweater under the shade of a tree. Brushing out the loose undercoat is the equivalent of taking off the sweater. Clipping the coat off is the equivalent of removing the shady tree, exposing yourself in the direct sun.

Our very own Charlotte, founder of Woozelbears is training to complete RUN Hereford only 5 months post op for a charity close to her heart, in honour of a family member they lost last year, Suzy. During Suzy's last days the family spent a lot of time at St Michael's Hospice - Hereford .

St Michaels Hospice provide a range of services to people living with terminal illness. Care is free to patients, their families and carers, whether that's pain relief, respite or counselling support.

We appreciate that not everyone can afford to give during the current economic climate but exposure and awareness of this wonderful place is just as valuable. 💙🕊

🐾 Why it is best to wait to approximately 6 months for puppies first haircut. 🐾

Puppies are born with a single coat of soft-fluffy fur. This soft, fluffy fur helps regulate body temperature, whilst their bodies are maturing. At around 4-6 months of age puppies will shed their puppy coat and grow there adult coat which is more course and thicker. Clip their coat too soon and they will struggle to regulate their temperature 🥵🥶

Between the ages of 3-6 month is the perfect time to bring them in for their course of puppy introductory sessions to grooming.

Introducing your puppy to grooming is important to set them up ready for their first hair cut. The grooming experience will be much less daunting for them and will become part of normal life. It's perfect for there socialisation.

What are the benefits of feeding raw?

🔍 Time to get up close and personal with a little lesson on hair follicles 💇 and how they determine ease of coat maintenance.

When a dog comes in to the parlour with a very tangly or matted coat, we have to make a decision if we brush out or clip off.

It's always due to the dogs comfort that we clip off. However if we were to brush the coat it would leave it damaged, making it extremely difficult for you to keep on top of at home. 😱

Damaged hair matts up much more easier, requiring over brushing to de-matt which causes more damage. This is just creating a constant circle of de-matting, which isn't enjoyable for you or your dog. 🔄😫 If you look at the image of the damaged hair, you can see how it can easily grip onto other damaged hairs, causing tangles that then leads to matting.

So when we suggest clip off or cut out the matts to start a-fresh, we mean for a new grooming regime and to encourage growth of healthy hair making coat maintenance much easier for you. 😊

🆒 The best way to keep them cool 🪭and healthy is to remove the hot, dense undercoat with a regular de-shed. 🥵

🪮 Where brushing detangles and removes topcoat debris, de-Shedding removes the dead undercoat without removing or damaging the topcoat. It involves grooming techniques and tools designed to remove the loose, dead hair, to promote healthier skin and a shinier coat for your pooch. 🐩

De-shedding is especially important for the double coated breeds, such as Labrador, Golden Retriever, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Akita, Pomeranian, Husky …

Have you heard about our Bear Club, Boundless?

🐻 What is it? Boundless is a rehabilitation subscription. This means members can have access to Hydrotherapy and/or Laser on an unlimited basis for a monthly fee.

🐾 Why is it beneficial? This is a great way to keep on top of your dog’s maintenance at a discount. Most of the dogs we see are suffering from life-long mobility issues, so we wanted to offer a discounted way to make regular attendance possible.

🐶 Tell me more. When your dog comes in for treatment, the hydrotherapist is always assessing them. If they find your dog requires an increase in attendance, this will come at no extra cost to you, particularly through this difficult time.

🪮☑️ Did you know there are different types of slicker brush?

Not just texture and shape, but the length of the crooks, which play a big part in maintaining coat condition. You also want to look at where the bend is on the crook of your slicker brush.

🐩 Slicker brushes are great at removing knots and debris from long coated dogs. But do you have the right kind of slicker for your dogs coat type? The slicker on the right has a 70/30 length crook, this slicker is best suited for wool coats such as Cockerpoos, Labradoodles, Cavachons, Poodles and Bichons.

🐕‍🦺 There are some long haired breeds that have more than one coat type on them. For example, Border Collies, Golden Retrievers and Spaniels have two different genetic coat programmings. The jacket stays at one length and they have longer hair on their abdomen, backs of legs, tail and ears. For their jackets use a slicker on the left with a 50/50 crook. You would then use the 70/30 crooked slicker for the longer furnishings.

Don't be alarmed if you need different types of slicker for one dog (you should see our brush draw 😂) Different coat types require different brushes.

Always remember to line brush your dog to ensure you're getting every layer of the coat and go over the body with a comb to check for any missed knots.

🚨 After just 4 sessions over the space of two weeks, Cassie’s scarring is significantly reduced! 😯
🐶 Cassie underwent a very heavy surgery which left her leg with a large incision site. Her owners were quick to jump onto an alternative therapy while she waited to be allowed back in the water 💦 They have used laser treatment which not only helps to deliver a fresh supply of nutrients and oxygen to the incision site and muscles underneath 💪 but also helps to reduce internal and external scarring, it accelerates the normal healing time and helps to reduce pain and swelling 😁

🐾 I don’t know about you guys but we surely think her leg looks much better! 🐾

💪 Winnie definitely takes our heart this week. She has been on a long hard road while rehabbing from having IVDD. For anyone who knows what this is, knows that the progress can slow and painful ☹️ Winnie’s owners have never gave up hope and have always been happy with even the smallest amount of progression 😌

🐶 Hers and her owners dedication to her condition and rehab are the sole reason she has made as much progress as she has. She has been attending for a long time and only recently she has started to take her first, unaided steps! This is amazing news and we couldn’t be any happier for her owners 🥰

🐾 Keep standing strong with your pups even in the face of defeat. Progression and improvement will come. Patience is 100% with it ❤️
