How shinny is Mr Obi !! Such a good boy walking straight on the bridge (and staying with a little 🀏 bribery). Looking forward to seeing Obi again in 6 months to see if we’ve had any changes to the areas identified in the body condition scoring.

What would your go to bribery be ? … for Lucy and Giselle it’s definitely herby nuggets or a polo !

BOLLY UPDATE - H B Equestrian Services

It's November 😱 how has this year flown by already! Bolly has fluctuated a bit as we came into the autumnal period but as a whole his body condition score stayed stable. Discussed in our sessions me and Hannah agreed that the muscle is coming but still lacking in areas when you palpate Bolly's body.

I thought it was interesting to compare 2023 and 2024 photos of him with a 15kg weight difference but the same body condition score!!

Bolly's weigh so far :
17/05/23 - 613kg - low 4
05/06/23 - 628kg - low 4 (+15kg)
19/07/23 - 621kg - high 3 (-7kg)
26/08/23 - 627kg - 3 (+6kg)
19/09/23 - 621KG - 3 (-6KG)
14/10/23 -611kg - 3 (-10kg)
15/11/23- 612kg - 3 (+1kg)
22/01/24 - 600kg - 3 (-12kg)
16/03/24 - 590kg - 3 (-10kg)
15/04/24 - 590kg - 3 (0kg)
30/05/24 - 594kg - 3 (+4kg)
26/06/24 - 604kg - Low end of a 4 (+10kg)
06/08/24 - 616kg - Low end of a 4 - (+12kg)
14/09/24 - 595kg - 3 (-21kg)
16/10/24 - 605kg - 3 (+10kg)
10/11/24 - 597kg - 3 (-8kg)

It was weigh day for my two today ! Both get done every month but both have very different targets. For Giselle it’s weight loss/ maintenance at a lower weight and any weight increase πŸ“ˆ can signal that her insulin may be creeping up. Lucy is on a weight/ muscle gain journey so any loss can be quite costly for her.

Would you believe they are mother and daughter with a 10 year age gap ?

βš– Perspective βš–

When on a weight loss or gain journey with your horse it is so easy to lose sight of how far we have come. Giselle for instance is a great example. Clearly she is overweight in the bottom photo but understandably the circumstances in 2020 where she was post foal and out 24/7 in a herd allowed her good doer nature to take a hold.

Top photo:
- 2024
- age 18
- in light work (lunged 3/4 times a week)
- EMS diagnosis and hyperinsulinemia
- weight managed and recorded monthly
- no crest or fat pads

Bottom photo:
- 2020
- age 14
- post 2nd foal
- living in a herd playing nanny
- no EMS or lami diagnosis
- weight unknown but clearly cresty

Either way a journey is a journey despite where you started or where you are at currently.

πŸ§šβ€β™€οΈ How stunning is little Pixie πŸ§šβ€β™€οΈ

Sorry for the radio silence, I've been super busy with weighing. I think we can all agree Pixie is simply stunning ! Her owner was thrilled with the her weight. As a miniature shetland her weight loss goals would be only small by comparison to a horse much bigger than her.

With cold weather on the way, here are a few tips to help horses and ponies with insulin dysregulation or a history of laminitis:

Sunny days with cold frosty nights cause sugars to accumulate in the grass. People often think that laminitic horses shouldn't graze frosty grass until the sun has melted the frost, but that's not exactly correct - they shouldn't graze the grass until there has been a return to night time temperatures above 5'C and/or overcast weather.
During sunny weather grass makes and stores sugars (photosynthesis), at night when grass is able to grow these sugars are used up (respiration), but when environmental conditions such as low temperatures (below around 6'C), lack of rainfall or poor fertility prevent growth, sugar levels can continue to accumulate in the grass, making it unsuitable for horses and ponies with insulin dysregulation and increasing the risk of laminitis.

Other reasons horses may show signs of laminitis/foot discomfort in cold weather may include:
- damage in the feet from previous or uncorrected rotation making feet more sensitive to hard frozen ground,
- hay soaking is not as effective at colder water temperatures,
- horses tend to get less exercise/turnout in cold/frosty/snowy weather.

What you can do:
- prevent or limit access to grass during and after sunny frosty weather until the weather changes to milder nights and overcast days, and feed analysed forage (hay, haylage, perhaps some straw or non-molassed chaff) with combined sugar and starch levels below 10% (on a dry matter basis and analysed by wet chemistry) instead. It is not the frost itself that is the risk, it is the weather conditions that cause the frost, so do not allow horses to graze once the frost has melted with the sun - wait until the grass has been able to respire and use up some of its sugar.
- keep feet warm and protected - use leg wraps/bandages, pads and boots on feet, warm deep bedding. Thick wool hiking socks can be great for keeping pony feet and legs warm.
- ensure feet are correctly aligned if there is a history of laminitis, or if hooves have divergent (wider at the heels than at the toes) hoof rings, by having x-rays taken and realigning trimming carried out if there is rotation or thin soles.
- continue to exercise horses with no signs of foot discomfort or laminitis if safe to do so in cold weather - exercise increases insulin sensitivity. If you cannot exercise, consider whether you need to reduce the energy content of your horse's diet - aim to feed no less than 1.5% of the horse's bodyweight (on a dry matter basis) of forage and high fibre feeds, and look for lower energy (DE) feeds rather than reducing intake below 1.5% if weight loss is needed.

βš–οΈ Grazing tip No.1️⃣ βš–οΈ
Over these next few post I will share some tips and alternative methods that we as horse owners can use to help our equines from the grazing perspective.

-- Track Systems--

Increasingly becoming popular in the UK with many yards opening up offering this style of management. As we know horses are herd animals and trickle feeders and these systems mimic these natural instincts well.

What is a track system ?

Track systems involve the horses living on a long track, usually around the perimeter of a field or several fields. Ideally, this track has low levels of grass or no grass at all (some are completely off grass), and resources such as hay, water, shelter, and enrichment are distributed around the track area. This purportedly encourages horses to move more than they would in a standard field environment.

The idea of a track system is predominantly based on the book β€œPaddock Paradise” by Jaime Jackson, who advocates grass free, surfaced tracks which will help to support hoof structure and health. A report constructed in 2020 by the University of Liverpool reported that 62% of owners reported that their horses loss weight when living on a track system.

Pros and Cons

Pros :
- movement is encouraged
- horses can be on the track 24/7 if adequate food, water and shelter are provided
- environmental enrichment - areas can be incorporated with scratching posts, poles and different surfaces can be used
- Herd and Social interaction

Cons:
- cost - the initial set up can be costly
- Wear on the grass - this method is not ideal for the best grassland management- but then not all tracks have to be permanent.

--HOW? --

Various shapes of tracks can be used but the more complicated shapes can inhibit movement so simplicity is key sometimes. Here are some examples of tracks that you can set up in a field. Spreading enrichment, food, water and shelter around the track will encourage movement.
