May is Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month!
🐶🐱🐰🐑🐄🦜🐾

The nursing team here at Greenside have been very busy but we didn’t want the month to end before saying hello!

Day to day, most of our time is spent behind the scenes working to provide the best care for our patients. Taking and processing blood samples, monitoring anaesthesia, taking radiographs, scaling and polishing teeth and providing cosy and comfy recovery environments are just some of the important jobs our nursing team are responsible for.

As well as this, the nursing team offer many different types of consultations. You will see one of our nurses for your pet’s check up after their operations, for their second vaccinations, to bandage wounds and carry out health checks. We also offer consults for advice on weight management, confidence building (if your dog gets worried about coming to the vets!) and many more!

If you would like to book a consult with our lovely team, please give us a call! We look forward to seeing you soon 💚🐾

Barbecue safety tips for pet owners. 🐶🐱

If you’re planning a barbecue this summer, be aware it could present some hazards to your pets. Here are some key things to remember while you're getting your grill on:

🌭 Sharing isn't caring - Don't share your food with your pets. The high fat content in many meats and foods, especially with bones, aren't safe.

🔥 Be fire safe - Keep your pets well away from hot flames, fuel and grills. Remember that smoke can irritate animals' lungs. Keep pets inside if they can't be well supervised.

🍔 Tidy up - Make sure to keep things clean and tidy as tinfoil, clingfilm, skewers and grease-covered stones all pose health risks.

For more advice on keeping your pet safe in the garden this summer, speak to one of our team.

Congratulations Rebecca! 🎉

💚Meet Rebecca, OUR NEWLY QUALIFIED VETERINARY NURSE!💚

Rebecca found out last Friday that she has passed her final exams towards being a Veterinary Nurse! We are all so delighted for her and know she is going to excel in her new position!🏅

Rebecca joined us as a patient care assistant in back 2021, Rebecca has always had a strong passion for animals and really understands the importance of meeting their emotional and physical needs. You will often find Rebecca in the kennels thinking up ways to enrich our patients. This understanding comes from a long history of working with animals including boarding kennels, rescue kennels and a varied career working at the PDSA Newcastle. 🐕

We asked Rebecca she enjoys about working here, as with all the nursing team she loves to get a day on Radiology. Rebecca says it feels like you are really involved in the patients case, developing my nursing skills over my time training, to produce a high standard of radiographs for the Vets to interpret is very fulfilling part of the role. 😊

Rebecca also really enjoys how much time she spends with the patients. Forming a good bond with each patient during their treatment and rehab journey, especially when you get to be involved in the cases from the beginning. These cases are really rewarding, loving seeing the improvements made and the positive comments from owners who are so pleased with their pets progress. 🥰

We are very please we have been able to give Rebecca this opportunity to thrive, develop and grow in confidence to become a Veterinary Nurse, with all the hard work now paying off, now that she has passed her exams. We are delighted for her and can't wait to watch her flourish as a Veterinary Nurse!! 💚

Over the coming spring and summer months, the risk of "flystrike" increases among the rabbit population. Flystrike occurs when flies lay eggs on the rabbit, which hatch into maggots. These maggots then eat the rabbit's flesh, with often fatal results.

Due to rapid development, the best prevention is keeping your rabbit clean and in good health, feeding them an appropriate diet, carefully checking their bottoms at least twice daily and applying preventative treatments during the peak season.
Rabbits are at an increased risk of getting flystrike if they are unable to keep themselves clean due to obesity, arthritis, poor dental health or cramped, dirty living conditions.

Some of the typical signs of flystrike include:
🐰 Digging into a corner of their living area
🐰 A strong smell from their living area
🐰 Open sores or visible maggots on the skin
🐰 Lethargic and very quiet
🐰 Not eating or drinking

Please get in touch with us quickly for further help and advice if you have any suspicions.
