Hydrotherapy for Cats 😻

Yes, that’s right, it's not just for dogs! 🐈

Mobility issues can affect cats of all ages and have a huge impact on their quality of life. As cat owners you know your cat loves to play, chase, hunt, scratch and groom themselves. Your cat needs to keep active to stay happy and healthy. 🐱💚

Hydrotherapy can offer a wide range of benefits to your cat’s mobility. 🐈💦

🔹Strengthens muscles

🔹Supports with weight loss

🔹Aids in pain relief

🔹Improves posture control

🔹Improves balance & coordination

🔹Improves proception

🔹Improves stamina

This makes Hydrotherapy an ideal way for your cat to regain their mobility! 😻🐾💦

Why do we use an underwater treadmill over a swimming pool? 💦🤔

Our underwater treadmill allows for a more controlled form of hydrotherapy than free swimming. Our therapists can influence range of motion, muscle activation and gait patterns by varying the height of the water and using therapeutic techniques to guide their patient’s movement. An underwater treadmill also encourages a neutral posture, preventing excess flexion of the spine, something that is contraindicated in dogs with back pain. 🐕🐈💚

Hydrotherapy for weight loss 💦⚖️

Here at Greenside, we offer hydrotherapy as an enjoyable way to help aid with weight loss. Sadly, canine obesity is on the rise and this can take a huge toll on the musculoskeletal system and general health. 🐶☹️

Low impact exercise is an ideal way for keeping your dog in their best shape. It can help to burn fat and increase the metabolic rate and muscle strength. 😊💪

Movement is medicine!!! 🐾💚

Meet the Team – Katrina 👋

Meet Katrina, when she 1st joined Greenside, she was a Patient Care Assistant but quickly found a passion for Hydrotherapy and is now a Qualified Hydrotherapist in the Regenerative Medicine Department. 💦

Katrina moved to the Scottish Borders with her family in 2018 and now can't see herself living anywhere else. 💚

Katrina loves collies and has an 8-year-old Welsh Collie called Kyra, who is her inspiration for a career in the animal care field. In her spare time she loves to walk the countryside with Kyra and plans to see as much of the world as possible with her husband. 🐶🐾

Katrina works closely with the physiotherapists Katie & Sofia to share ideas and help formulate the best treatment plan for each individual patient. Katrina really enjoys seeing such a wide range of breeds and all different types of conditions here at Regen, making every day different to the next. 😊

She looks forward to meeting all your lovely doggies very soon. 🐩🐕‍🦺🐕

Meet the Team – Sofia 👋

Sofia is a Veterinary Physiotherapist at Greenside Vets, originally from Catalonia. She joined the team in February 2023 after completing her Integrated Master’s degree in Veterinary Physiotherapy. Passionate about regenerative medicine, Sofia was drawn to Greenside by the opportunity to work in a facility that embraces innovative approaches to animal care. She is a registered member of the Register of Animal Musculoskeletal Practitioners (RAMP) and has a particular interest in myofascial tissue—especially its role in mobility, pain management, and force transmission. 😊

In her spare time, you can find her horse riding, running (when the knees don’t hurt), and trying to stop her cat, Birdie, from attacking the stairs carpet. 🐱🐴💚

When is physiotherapy vs hydrotherapy appropriate 💦🐾

In order to determine the best treatment option for your pet, an assessment by one of our musculoskeletal vets or veterinary physiotherapists is necessary. They will be able to determine the primary goals for your pet and then advise you on how we can best achieve this. 💚

Often, if your pet is painful, especially with muscle soreness, physiotherapy is more indicated initially to ease pain and tension, before progressing to strengthening with hydrotherapy. 🐱🐶

Often a combination of physiotherapy and hydrotherapy is appropriate, but this is case dependent. 😊

What to look for in a physio? 💚

Did you know the title ‘Veterinary Physiotherapist’ isn’t protected? This means anyone can call themselves a veterinary physiotherapist without repercussions. A lot of our clients travel great distances to Greenside and so cannot utilise our in-house rehabilitation team. If you are looking for a veterinary physiotherapist from further afield, it is important to look for:

💚 A level 6 or equivalent qualification
💚 Membership of a professional body or governing register
💚 Insurance

Diwali is almost here! 🔦

While the Festival of Lights is a special time for families, the fireworks can be unsettling for pets. A few ways to help them feel safe:

🎆Walk dogs earlier in the day before celebrations begin.
🎆Close curtains and play calming music to soften loud bangs.
🎆Create a safe space with their favourite blanket and toys.
🎆Make sure pets are microchipped and collars are secure, just in case they get startled.

If you know your pet struggles with fireworks, speak to us for more advice and support.

Meet the Team – Katie 👋

Katie is Lead Veterinary Physiotherapist at Greenside and first joined the team back in January 2021. She holds a BSc in Veterinary Physiotherapy and a L5 diploma in Advanced Canine Hydrotherapy Techniques and is a member of the National Association of Veterinary Physiotherapists. She is also currently undertaking an Advanced Diploma in Applied Animal Behaviour, with a keen interest in the relationship between pain and behaviour, and a drive to help our more reactive patients benefit from rehabilitation. 😊

In her spare time, you will find Katie spending time with her Cocker Spaniel Stanley and her retired Irish Sports Horse Finnegan. She also enjoys running, hill walking and going to the gym. 🐶🐴🌄
