Milo came for his first School Day today 👨🏾‍🎓

Milo’s owner wanted help with him pulling on lead and excitement around moving vehicles and other dogs.

Milo gets quite aroused so we did several short sessions though the day working on loose lead walking, focus work around traffic & other dogs.

By the end of the day we had achieved some control on the lead and around other dogs 🐶 🤩

These things are by no means a quick fix but definitely great start to his training in School Days, advice and homework for his owner to work on, we can then see how we progress in his next session!

Lots of ways to practice recalls… using a channel is great, practicing a wait and recalling back to you, using someone else to restrain and release.

Ultimately you best chance of success is being about to control the environment, so even with some exciting dogs on the other side, Olive was still successful in recalling back to me and some tasty cookies 🍪

Success is a series of small wins 💪🏼

Lambing season can be a wonderful time of the year, but livestock worrying, which can be caused when dogs chase or attack sheep, can have serious effects on animals including stress, injury, abortion and death.

Regardless of how solid your recall is animals are unpredictable 👇🏼👇🏼

Iv had the opportunity to train my dogs around livestock over the years. But even then their behaviours can be unexpected….

So stick to the footpaths and keep your doggos on a short lead.. Live stock worrying is a Criminal Offence and it’s awful for the animals and expensive for farmers! 😡

OH BALLS! 🥎

Very rarely I will play ball on my group walks… Kill joy I know 🙈 but dogs LOVE playing ball and throwing a ball for a group of dogs who all want it, is only going to cause trouble!

Don’t get me wrong all my training sessions both puppies & agility will involve toys & balls being used! 🥎 🧸

I’m also very aware of ball throwing injuries so I never use a ball chucker, throwing short distances reduces the amount of speed and therefore reduces the stopping impact on joints when they pick it up, throwing into long grass can also reduce impact and encourage searching too.

I take lots of time to train recalls not only to my own dogs but all my walking clients too…

I like to them to know that when the whistle blows treats are delivered! 🍪

Everyone loves a pub dog! 🐶🍺🍲

Saturdays Puppy Group started to learn Settle.

Often we forget to train our dogs to do nothing and actually it’s so important.
Being able to go out for a meal or drink without your dog wanting to go say ‘hi’ to everyone or barking and reacting to other dogs.

Starting from early on will mean going to the pub will be the pleasure it’s meant to be!

It’s not all about strict training and walking miles on end, taking time to have a sniff or in this case search for snacks can have huge benefits.
Sniffing releases endorphins so allows dogs to relax and have some structured free time ❤️

When will it end?

With every walk at the moment being so wet and muddy… even the roads are filthy with all the wet vehicle muck!

Little tip and something I use for my own dogs are these fleeces… they come in every single dog size/shape you can imagine!

But mostly they are pretty waterproof, the legged ones help confine the mud to the feet so towelling off is easier when they get home!
(If you do have a fluffy dog you might have to brush them a little more often)

They wash and tumble dry great too… no maintenance required!

I know everyone is just pleased the doggos have had a great walk but if the mud is getting you down then I can highly recommend an Equafleece ❤️🐾
