This beautiful puppy has been with me for the weekend. We have worked on socialising as she needed to learn some boundaries meeting other dogs so had a lovely walk with some pals that are very neutral. Worked on recall to a whistle now her voice command is excellent and some dummy retrieve work. She is now about 23weeks old and is the most amazing little lady.
Dog reactivity
This big beautiful boy’s owner said today she couldn’t cope any longer that he gets out of control and she’s scared to walk him. He is particularly bad around German Shepherds and the owner feels she cannot walk him if she see’s one. Giving her some time to reflect we took him on an emergency walk looking at his interactions with dogs he hasn’t met before. This was the end result after careful management of the dogs and the environment.
Coffee progression
Coffee is the most well trained puppy her owner is also a dog handler and has put countless hours into turning coffee into this beautiful girl.
Off lead centre on point now building distance
Adding in more commands for Coffees puppy training. Coffees mum is a wonderful dog mum and doesn’t it show. Teaching “centre” position between legs. Which will progress straight into a down soon! Isn’t she clever!
Happy Max
Max and his owner have had a tough time. He’s worked super hard now after a few days loads in the van and walks a bit better. Living in a kennel as he’s not getting along with his other family dogs he’s been stressed out. I heard he loves the water so it’s only right for my last appointment I kidnapped him and his mum for a play session by the river. There’s no point walking a dog in the same place and doing constant training you need to look at the dogs needs and my lord did he need this!
A lovely start to the day with this big beautiful boys first walk in Ladys Academy. We are a dog walking service that specialises in larger dogs, dogs with behavioural issues or high drive dogs. This chap and I are building a bond with firm boundaries to then start looking at some impulse/behaviour corrections. Isn’t he wonderful 💕
Puppy playtime in the sunshine this morning
Proud dog guardian
Lady’s paperwork stated she wasn’t safe and had to wear a muzzle. Lunges at strangers and dog reactive from a 25m distance.
She was listed to be euthanised if it wasn’t for some lovely people seeing the good in her she wouldn’t be here. Well here she is walking through a busy seaside promenade I’ve had to speed it up but I am so proud of her. It was noisy with loud music, fun fair and children screaming. Excuse me I sound like a chipmunk 🐿
Here’s my highly intelligent retired military high assurance search dog shaking off the water in the water 🤦♀️ she’s a special Lady sometimes
Here’s lady and her Dino
With the fireworks randomly last night and the strong winds Lady is out of sorts. She has horrendous PTSD when exposed to loud noises and stormy weather unsettles her. Often when she’s more anxious she will opt for carrying a soft toy than a ball on walks I think because it’s softer so she can clench it harder. So this morning she took Dino out 😊 When Lady has bad days she doesn’t have to go for walks it’s all about building trust, if you force a dog into situations you know that are uncomfortable with and something happens to make it worse or reinforce the negative association you will damage the bond and trust you have with your dog walks around busy places you can’t ensure that there won’t be anything to cause a reaction. So this is why is worse weather or if there are loud bikes/cars around town Lady and I will often do a particular route and head into a “safe spot” these are locations I’ve found in town Lady is happy in and can feel safe rather than force her all the way home. For example Hair at No11 in town I know if there is a loud bike or lorry banging when unloading I can whizz her in get some cuddles and a bit of light play. This positive atmosphere will decompress her slightly and reset for us to continue the walk or head home.
This may not be the same for all dogs and each dog will react differently under stress and when exposed but if you have a highly anxious or reactive dog and struggle on walks it’s worth finding a place or location halfway on your walking routes where if they reach the top of the anxiety ladder you can help them get down a couple of rungs. I will be starting some guided dog walks to explain this for people who are struggling with walks and would like a hand.
Also Lady is a very rare and extreme case of anxiety and fear of loud noises.
Are here’s Rocky 💖
At almost 11 Rocky loves a walk but just does short bursts and then we pause and go again. He’s angling for a paddle in the water now. A lovely afternoon mooch
Happy Walkies in the sunshine
Here’s Lady she knows the route to the river at Mill Dale. It’s important on walks to have a mix of terrain and environments. Each location gives different smells and enrichment to give a dog a both mental and physically stimulating walk.
