What an incredible day at the Armatus Canine Training Centre for our first-ever Online Portal Member’s Day! 🐾 It was so great to finally see everyone in person, watch our members connect, strengthening our amazing and ever-growing community - and of course work together to train some amazing dogs. 🐕

The conversations were rich, the discussions insightful, and the energy was fantastic. 🙌

We’re already looking forward to the next time we can all gather again. Until then, keep up the great work with your dogs! 🐶💪

Thank you for recognising a special old dog and we look forward to meeting the team personally ☺️

Meet the handsome retired Military Working Dog Sam (also known as ‘Angry Sam’).

During his career, Sam was deployed in Afghanistan and during a search had fallen down a large well and broken his front leg. Once he was brought back to health by some excellent vets within the army, he was then was teamed with the husband of our wonderful Antinol Pack member Barron-Harris as his Arms and Explosives search dog.

They served together for a few years before Sam was reassigned and redeployed to Afghanistan. During this time he was awarded Public Service dog of the year 2017. 🥇

In 2018 as Sam was due to retire from service, and it was without a second thought that he was reunited with his former handler and his wife, who to live his best retirement years.

Since he retired, he has acted as a demonstration dog for our civilian trainee Explosives detection dog handlers, but unfortunately progressively went deaf.

Now "a little older, a little greyer and with considerably less teeth", he competes in Scentwork under the National nosework association, to keep him fit, active and mentally stimulated in his older years.

Sam is a very busy, quirky, slightly weird and very cheeky little guy. He’s always on the go and certainly doesn’t act his age. He loves his handlers (now owners) and gives all he can when anything’s asked of him. In his youth he was a tad grouchy but since his retirement he’s mellowed and learned to love his doggy family.

We ADORE Sam and we cannot wait to meet him... spoiler alert...you'll be seeing more of Sam! 🐾❤️

Temperatures have shot up again this week!

We are still open, however we understand that your dogs won’t want to be out in the heat!

If you have a session this week, please contact us if you’d like to rearrange (you won’t be charged for late changes due to weather).

Anyone who does decide to come in, we will do our very best to ensure that we work in shade, have lots of water available and keep our sessions short (however this may mean you don’t get your full session, for the safety of your dog). Our trainers and behaviourists are all trained canine first aiders and will be keeping close eyes on all dogs. But we will need you to ENSURE that you bring everything you need to keep your vehicle cool and keep your dog cool.

The training team ARE BACK!!

Our apologies for the slow replies this week, but we’re back and catching up today so we will be in touch if we haven’t been already :)

Thank you to everyone who wished Jazz & Venom good luck! They brought home a 1st place in the Category 1!

Ryan also gained his Globalring decoy certification and was one of the decoys for the competition in all 3 categories!

So a really successful week for the team!

This coming week (1st - 7th July) the training centre is closed!

The training team are off on adventures in Europe, getting some valuable CPD and supporting Jazz & Venom!

Chris will be holding the fort working at venues with the current NASDU EDD course as they head into their final week!

We will still be picking up our messages and emails and the behaviourists will still be supporting all of their coaching clients as normal, with face to face training commencing again on the 8th!

☀️ It’s that time again ☀️

If you’re booked in to train with us this week and your dog is struggling, please contact us to rearrange! We will do our best to keep dogs in the shade and have water easily accessible (as well as keeping sessions shorter) but rescheduling your session is available also.

☀️ When it comes to the heat and our dogs, common sense is the key!

☀️ (Generally) Dogs can acclimatise to the heat quite quickly, but you’ve got to take it steady and be sensible with exposure.

☀️ When out with your dogs in this heat, using shade, keeping to the grass/soft ground rather than tarmac and having plenty of water accessible is vital.

☀️ Using fans and shade when in the home environment can help keep dogs more comfortable and although air conditioning is tempting, it can keep them too cool and cause a shock to the system when they’re away from it.

☀️ They can still do LIGHTER work/training, however managing the environment is key. You don’t want to be in the middle of the garden at midday working hard…. Use the cooler parts of the day, working short sessions and work on lower energy exercises.

🔥 There will always be exceptions and some dogs will struggle more than others!

If in doubt DON’T DO IT and just let the dog rest. Missing a walk for a couple days or training for a day or 2 isn’t going to hurt but heat can!
