Before cameras, illustrators provided a valuable contribution to historical accounts, and this was also the case when visually documenting animals. This is Plate 8 from The Zoology of the Voyage of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror (1839-1843). The reptile section was written by 2 authors, George R. Gray (pp. 1-8, 1845) and Albert Günther (pp. 9-19, 1875). Günther mentions the original reptile drawings were done by Mr Ford.

I have included photos of the respective species portrayed in the drawings.

With the Turacos up and running it’s now time to start getting stuck into taming this Northern Helmeted Curassow we have been hand rearing with the help of Quintus and JJ socialising.

The helmeted curassow (Pauxi pauxi) or northern helmeted curassow, is a large terrestrial bird in the family Cracidae found in the subtropical cloud-forest in steep, mountainous regions of western Venezuela and northern Colombia. There are two subspecies found in different mountain ranges. It is a mostly black bird with a white tip to its tail, a red bill and a distinctive grey casque on its forehead. The population of this bird is in decline and the International Union for Conservation of Nature has rated its conservation status as "endangered".

It maybe the only Encounter/Demonstration Curassow in the country with most just being aviary/zoo birds.

On the right is a bloody chicken 🐓 which came with the Curassow to keep it company and steady.

What the f**k I’m going to do with a chicken I’ll never know.

Today we have been busy at different schools 🏫 as well as trying to setup a new data input system for all of ours animals 😴

Mongoose Wednesday 🙂 today we visited the children of Twynyrodyn Community Primary School School who were learning all about different animals.

Helping us today were both Tavi the Marsh Mongoose and Timmy the Yellow Mongoose

We love visiting Twynrodyn.

We always love visited Goetre Primary.

They always provide the children with lots of enrichment within their curriculum.

They were learning all about mammals so we brought along some of ours.
