What an adventure-filled Wednesday for our Paws 4 A Break walkers!

Andy and Kieran had an absolute blast with their fabulous groups of doggies today! There was splashing, zooming, bush-diving, and a fair bit of ‘run rings around the humans’—all in the name of fun, of course!

From exploring new scents to racing through the trees, today was all about freedom, fun, and fantastic walks. Safe to say, there are some very happy (and probably very sleepy) pups this evening!

Where will our next adventure take us? Stay tuned to find out!

Planning a holiday but not sure what to do with your cats.?

Keeping your cat at home is the safest and least unsettling option when you go on holiday rather than them going into a cattery. They are less likely to be stressed and will be more content in their own environment.

You need a cat sitter who can preferably visit at least twice a day and make sure your cat is well-fed and safe. However, very young or old cats or those with certain health conditions may need more frequent visits. We can even arrange a sitter to spend the full holiday with your cats if that is what you feel more comfortable with.

Usually, your cat will be happiest and most confident in his own home. Like any pet, your cat can feel abandoned when left by their owner especially if they have never experienced this before. Your cat has no idea if and when you will return which can prove quite stressful for them. Keeping their territory and being looked after in their own home is the best solution for most cats. But what other benefits does cat sitting have?
* Stay at home in their safe and secure environment.
* Surrounded by familiar sounds, smells and sights.
* Regular diet and exercise routine.
* No stress from transportation (the RSPCA advises pet owners to leave pets at home rather than transporting them, as they find the travel stressful).
* No exposure to cattery diseases, other animals, fleas, ticks, parasites and disease.
* No stress of being in close proximity to strange animals. Many cats are territorial, or solitary, and being near other animals or strange places is stressful.
* Will love having playtime and attention from the pet sitter.
* Medical treatment will be maintained, if required.
* Having someone responsible on hand in case of an emergency.
* Our pet sitters will be able to transport your cats to the vets if needed.
* Reassurance that your house is not unattended whilst you’re away.
These are all ways in which you can ensure your cat is receiving the best care so you can feel totally care-free while you’re away. Our experienced staff members are used to all kinds of pet personalities; aloof, stroppy, pouting, swiping - we've seen them all and love them all equally. Paws 4 A Break are also happy to send you regular pet updates throughout their time with us.

🐾 Uncle Kieran’s Monday Walkies! 🐾

Today, Uncle Kieran was flying solo on the walks while Uncle William took on chauffeur duties (his knee still isn’t quite right, so he’s resting up!). That meant smaller group sizes—just three dogs per walk—but as always, we stick to our safety-first approach and never walk more than three dogs per person.

Even with fewer dogs per walk, Kieran had a fantastic day! He had an amazing mix of breeds out with him—Collies, Spaniels, Pointers, Labradors, Shepherds, Frenchies… and even some Airedales! 🐕✨ A proper variety pack, all enjoying different environments, exploring, sniffing, and soaking up the adventure.

No matter what the weather throws at us, the dogs just love getting out and about, and Kieran certainly enjoyed the company today too! Another brilliant day of walks in the bag. 💙🐾

🐾 Monday Walkies at Paws 4 A Break! 🐾

What a fantastic start to the week with Auntie Ella and Uncle Martyn leading three brilliant group walks today! 🥾🐕 The dogs had an absolute blast—some went for a swim, some were busy sniffing and exploring, others were crashing through the bushes, and of course, a few were happily chasing each other around. Nothing beats a good adventure to kick off the week!

A special shoutout to little Poppy, who joined us for her first ever walk with Paws 4 A Break today—she absolutely smashed it! 🎉 She took everything in her stride and had a wonderful time. Well done, Poppy! 👏

We also had the pleasure of bumping into two absolutely stunning Great Danes—both rescues, and both incredibly well-trained. They were off-lead, super social, and handled meeting all our dogs beautifully. Martyn was totally smitten with them (we think he may have a new favourite breed now! 😉).

The weather was a little chillier today, but nothing that stopped the fun. A proper adventure-filled Monday and a brilliant start to the week! Roll on the rest of the week’s walkies! 🚶‍♂️🐾

🐾 A Fun-Filled Pet Sitting Day at Paws 4 A Break!

Today, we had the pleasure of pet sitting some adorable little ones—and not just dogs for a change! Meet Oreo and Humbug, the cutest little hamsters who were more than happy to pose for some photos. Then there’s Malibu, who decided he was far too cosy to get out of bed (we see you, you lazy little monkey! 🙈). And, of course, we had the lovely Alfie the cat, who enjoyed his usual VIP treatment.

While we absolutely love our dogs, it’s always a fantastic change of pace to care for different pets. At Paws 4 A Break, we look after all kinds of animals—from rodents to reptiles, fish to birds, cats to dogs—and we love them all!

A big shoutout to Martyn and Ella, who had a brilliant time looking after these little ones today. 💙

📸 Check out some snaps of Oreo and Humbug below—sorry, no Malibu pics today… he was far too comfy for the camera! Also a photo of Alfie the cutest little cat.

🌿🐾 Welcome, Poppy! 🐾🌿

A big warm welcome to the lovely Poppy the Cockapoo, who has joined Paws 4 A Break today!

Poppy went on her very first group walk with us today—and you would never have guessed it was her first time! She fitted in like a glove, taking everything in her stride, making lots of new doggy friends, and absolutely loving every moment of her adventure. No issues at all—just a happy little girl enjoying her walk to the fullest!

We are absolutely delighted to have Poppy on board and look forward to many more wonderful walks together. A huge thank you to her owner for trusting us with her regular walks—we can’t wait to see more of this sweetheart!

🌟🐶 Welcome to the gang, Poppy! 🐶🌟

🦷 The Truth About Dog Dental Health – Do Dental Chews Really Work? 🦷

Most of us wouldn’t dream of skipping brushing our teeth twice a day—because we know what happens if we don’t. Gum disease, cavities, tooth decay, and let’s not forget the agony of toothache! Now, imagine if you had a raging tooth infection but couldn’t tell anyone… that’s exactly what happens to dogs when their dental health is neglected.

Dogs feel the same level of pain we do when they have dental disease, but they can’t pop to the dentist or complain about it. Instead, they suffer in silence—until the pain becomes unbearable and starts affecting their eating, drinking, and even their behaviour.

And the worst part? By the time we notice something is wrong, the damage is often severe—sometimes requiring tooth extractions or expensive veterinary treatment costing thousands of pounds.

💰 And here’s something many owners don’t realise—most pet insurance policies don’t cover dental treatment!
If your dog ever needs dental surgery, you could be footing the bill yourself. Check your policy carefully so you’re not caught off guard! Two of my own family members have had to pay out-of-pocket for their dogs’ dental surgeries because their insurance didn’t cover it. Prevention is always cheaper than treatment!

Brushing: The Best Way to Prevent Dental Disease 🪥

While dental chews can be useful, brushing your dog’s teeth is by far the best way to keep their mouth healthy.

✔ If your dog will allow it, brushing should always be your first port of call.
✔ Start young! If you’ve got a puppy, get them used to brushing early so it becomes part of their routine.
✔ Use dog-specific toothpaste – Human toothpaste contains xylitol and fluoride, which are toxic to dogs! Always use a pet-safe version.

If your dog won’t tolerate brushing, work on building a positive association with it. At Paws Positive Dog Training, we can help train your dog to accept (or even enjoy!) toothbrushing—because a stress-free brush is a game-changer!

🚨 Signs of Dental Disease or Gum Problems 🚨

If your dog shows any of these signs, it’s time for a vet check-up:

🔹 Bad breath (worse than usual!)
🔹 Yellow or brown plaque build-up on teeth
🔹 Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
🔹 Drooling excessively
🔹 Difficulty eating or favouring one side
🔹 Pawing at the mouth or rubbing their face

Do Dental Chews Really Work?

While dental chews won’t reverse existing dental disease, they can be a great addition to your dog’s dental hygiene routine—if used properly!

But here’s something to watch for: If your dog snaps a dental stick in half and swallows it without chewing, it’s doing absolutely nothing for their teeth! For a chew to be effective, they need to actually chew it, not just gulp it down.

⚠️ If your dog already has dental decay or advanced gum disease, no dental chew will fix it. At that point, you need to see a veterinary surgeon for proper treatment. Dental sticks are a preventative tool, not a cure.

How to Pick the Right Dental Chew

✔ Look for beneficial ingredients – Some dental chews contain ingredients that help teeth, gums, and overall health. Look for ones with natural enzymes, seaweed, or added vitamins.
✔ Turmeric is a great addition – If you’re choosing a dental stick, look for one with turmeric! Not only can it support oral health, but it also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits, making it a great addition to your dog’s diet.
✔ Avoid artificial additives and sugars – Some dental chews are basically flavoured junk food with no real benefit. Check the ingredients carefully.
✔ Make sure it’s long-lasting enough to be chewed – If your dog eats it in two seconds flat, it’s not helping!

Natural Alternatives to Dental Sticks 🦴

While dental sticks can be helpful, there are natural alternatives that might be even better for your dog:

🥩 Raw meaty bones – Nature’s toothbrush! Always size-appropriate and supervised.
🦷 Yak chews – Long-lasting and great for plaque removal.
🌱 Dried seaweed-based chews – Some contain natural enzymes that help reduce plaque.
🍖 Air-dried tendons or skin chews – Natural and great for strengthening jaw muscles while cleaning teeth.
🥕 Frozen raw carrots – A simple, low-calorie chew that can help clean teeth!

How to Use Dental Chews Safely

✔ Check the calorie content – Some are high in calories, so they should be factored into your dog’s diet.
✔ Supervise chewing – Always watch your dog when they try a new chew to ensure they don’t swallow large pieces.

Remember: Dental chews work best for dogs without existing dental disease. They’re fantastic for preventing oral health issues and helping to reduce plaque and tartar, but they don’t replace brushing!

Keeping Your Dog’s Teeth Healthy with Paws!

🐾 At Paws 4 a Day, we see plenty of dogs who love a good chew—but we always remind owners that dental chews alone aren’t enough! We also do body checks every day which include looking in the dog’s mouth so we can make you aware if there are any visible changes.

🐶 At Paws 4 A Break, we use natural chews like yak bars Tracheas and veggie chews in our enrichment sessions to support dental health. We also do body checks so can advise if theres any concerns. If your dog is in home boarding and your dog is use to having his/her teeth brushed, pop them in their travel bag and we will make sure they are cleaned.

🎓 At Paws Positive Dog Training, we can help train your dog to enjoy toothbrushing—because a stress-free brush is a game-changer!

Who are we ?

Paws 4 A Break has been established since 2015 and as quickly grow from strength to strength. Amanda, Martyn and the team are passionate about all animals and the welfare and comfort of all animals in their care is paramount in importance.

Amanda Jane Burton came up with the idea after hearing that people were getting more reluctant to leaving their dogs in traditional kennels. They are fully licensed, insured, canine First aiders and DBS checked and are hoping to expand their business further by handpicking local carers to care for more dogs whilst their owners are away. Paws 4 A Break have many repeat bookings and that is a testimony to their client’s faith in them to take great care of their pooches and enable them to have a worry-free holiday. Infact early booking is now essential to guarantee a place for your pooches. All dogs and clients receive a free consultation at their own home before the stay and are registered on to the service. They also recognised the need for dog walking and other pet care services in their local areas.

Not all cats like to leave their home and go to a cattery so Paws 4 A Break started a cat visit service where they can take of your cat in your own home with as many visits as you choose. Their services offer you peace of mind that your pets will be well cared for, giving you the assurance that both you and your dog/cat both deserve.
